MDA Space is a Canadian space-technology company that designs satellite systems, Earth-observation and geointelligence capabilities, space robotics, and services for operating space infrastructure. Its customers are primarily government institutions and commercial space companies, not individual consumers buying spacecraft or apps. The business is organized into three areas: Satellite Systems, Geointelligence, and Robotics & Space Operations.

What MDA Space does in plain language

MDA Space supplies the hardware, software, engineering, data capabilities, and operational support needed to build and use complex space missions. Depending on the contract, it may design a satellite platform, integrate payloads, deliver an Earth-observation system, provide robotic equipment for a station or lunar mission, or operate and maintain space robotics over many years.

That makes MDA a business-to-business and business-to-government space contractor. It is not best understood as a consumer spacecraft manufacturer, a public mapping app, or an organization that owns every satellite associated with its projects. In programs such as Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation low-Earth-orbit (LEO) constellation, MDA’s role is to supply systems and related work for the customer network.

MDA says it has more than 55 years of history and more than 450 missions. Those are company overview figures and should be treated as MDA’s own summary rather than an independently audited measure of mission success.

MDA Space’s three business areas

Business area What it provides Typical customer outcome Examples named by MDA
Satellite Systems Satellite platforms, payload integration, communications-satellite systems, and related engineering A customer receives a functioning spacecraft system or a major part of a satellite constellation Telesat Lightspeed; Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation
Geointelligence Earth-observation systems and services that turn observations of Earth into usable information Government or commercial users obtain data and analysis for monitoring and decision-making MDA CHORUS Earth-observation constellation program
Robotics & Space Operations Space manipulators, robotic systems, mission engineering, integration, and continuing operations A station, lunar, servicing, or in-space manufacturing mission can move, assemble, inspect, or maintain equipment MDA SKYMAKER robotics; Canadarm3 development; International Space Station robotics operations

The divisions overlap in real missions. A customer may need satellites to collect or relay information, geointelligence software and services to interpret observations, and robotics or operations support to keep space hardware working. The three-part structure is therefore a useful way to understand MDA’s portfolio, not a claim that every project fits into only one category.

Satellite Systems: building spacecraft for customer networks

What the division delivers

Satellite Systems is the part of MDA that builds satellite systems and associated technologies. Work can include spacecraft design, subsystem engineering, payload and bus integration, production, testing, and delivery to a launch or constellation operator. The exact scope depends on the customer’s program: MDA may be responsible for a complete system or for specific technologies within a larger architecture.

The important distinction is ownership. A supplier can design and manufacture spacecraft for a network without owning, selling subscriptions to, or operating that network. MDA’s reported participation in Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation illustrates this supplier role.

Telesat Lightspeed

Telesat Lightspeed is a customer satellite-network program cited in MDA’s fiscal-year reporting. MDA’s involvement demonstrates its ability to take on substantial satellite-system work for a commercial LEO communications architecture. It does not mean MDA is the retail internet provider or that MDA operates the constellation for end users.

Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation

MDA also identifies work on Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation. Here again, MDA is supplying systems or related engineering for the customer’s network. The project should not be described as an MDA-owned consumer satellite service.

FY2025 Satellite Systems revenue

For the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, MDA reported C$1,109.5 million in Satellite Systems revenue, up 85.5% from 2024. MDA attributed the increase primarily to higher work volumes on Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation. The figures come from MDA’s FY2025 reporting and a results announcement published March 4, 2026; they are not a forecast for later years.

Geointelligence: observing Earth and making the data useful

From observation to information

Geointelligence combines Earth observation with the systems and services needed to convert observations into information that a customer can use. A satellite sensor may capture images or other measurements, but an operational geointelligence capability also involves tasking, collection planning, data handling, processing, interpretation, and delivery to authorized users.

This work can support environmental monitoring, maritime or infrastructure awareness, emergency response, defense and security analysis, and other institutional decisions. The appropriate use depends on the mission and customer contract. MDA’s description does not establish that every data product is publicly available, nor that the company is a consumer mapping application.

MDA CHORUS

MDA CHORUS is described in company reporting as an Earth-observation constellation program associated with the Geointelligence business. Calling it a constellation program is more precise than saying simply that MDA sells satellite photographs: the program concerns the space assets and information services required to collect and use observations of Earth.

For a reader trying to identify the customer value, the key question is not only “What does the satellite see?” but also “How quickly and reliably can the resulting information reach the people making a decision?” Geointelligence work addresses that full chain.

Robotics & Space Operations: moving and maintaining hardware in space

Canadarm heritage and MDA SKYMAKER

MDA’s robotics heritage includes Canadarm technology used in human spaceflight. The company describes its MDA SKYMAKER line as derived from that heritage and aimed at mission-oriented robotics. Applications named by MDA include lunar rovers and landers, space stations, satellite servicing, and in-space assembly and manufacturing.

A space robot is more than a mechanical arm. It needs cameras and sensors, control software, fault protection, interfaces to the host spacecraft, procedures for astronauts or ground controllers, and extensive qualification for launch and the space environment. MDA’s robotics work therefore combines mechanical design with systems engineering, autonomy, operations planning, and long-duration support.

Canadarm3 for Lunar Gateway

MDA is developing Canadarm3 for the Lunar Gateway effort. MDA’s FY2025 filing describes design and construction activity, including system assembly, integration, and testing. Canadarm3 should therefore be described as under development, not as a robotic system already deployed at the lunar outpost.

The distinction matters because a development contract has different milestones and risks from an operational service. Design reviews, hardware manufacture, software verification, environmental testing, and integration with the Gateway all have to occur before a flight system can be used.

International Space Station robotics operations

Separately, MDA reported a C$250 million contract extension from the Canadian Space Agency in 2024 to support International Space Station robotics operations from 2025 through 2030. This is a service and operations role: it supports existing ISS robotics activity. It is distinct from building a new station and should not be presented as a contract to construct the Gateway or Canadarm3.

FY2025 Robotics & Space Operations revenue

For the year ended December 31, 2025, MDA reported C$309.3 million in Robotics & Space Operations revenue, up 10.5% year over year. The company linked the increase primarily to higher work on Canadarm3. As with the Satellite Systems figure, this is a dated fiscal-year result, not a current run-rate or guaranteed future revenue level.

How MDA’s work reaches a space mission

Although contracts differ, a large institutional space project generally passes through several stages. Understanding the stages helps explain why MDA can earn revenue before a satellite or robotic arm is operating in orbit.

  1. Mission definition: The customer sets an objective, such as broadband connectivity, Earth observation, lunar logistics, or station servicing. Engineers translate that objective into performance, mass, power, communications, safety, and schedule requirements.
  2. System architecture: MDA and its customer decide which spacecraft, payloads, ground equipment, software, and operational services are needed. For a constellation, this includes the relationship between individual satellites and the network as a whole.
  3. Design and analysis: Teams develop mechanical, electrical, thermal, software, communications, and control designs. They analyze failure modes and verify that the system can survive launch and the space environment.
  4. Manufacturing and integration: Components and subsystems are assembled into a satellite, robotic manipulator, or supporting system. Integration checks whether hardware and software work together rather than merely passing separate component tests.
  5. Qualification and acceptance testing: Space hardware undergoes vibration, thermal-vacuum, electromagnetic, functional, and other tests appropriate to the mission. Customer acceptance criteria determine when contracted deliverables are complete.
  6. Launch, commissioning, and operations: After launch or delivery, teams check out the system, resolve anomalies, and transition it into routine use. Robotics programs can continue for years through command planning, maintenance, training, and upgrades.

This lifecycle also explains why “MDA built a satellite” can be an incomplete description. The company may have supplied a spacecraft bus, a payload, a robotic subsystem, integration services, or the operations capability, while another organization owns the mission and serves its end users.

What the FY2025 numbers say—and what they do not

MDA’s FY2025 segment figures show where reported activity was concentrated during the year ended December 31, 2025:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Segment FY2025 revenue Year-over-year change Company-attributed driver
Satellite Systems C$1,109.5 million Up 85.5% from 2024 Higher work volumes on Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation
Robotics & Space Operations C$309.3 million Up 10.5% from 2024 Primarily higher work on Canadarm3

These are segment-revenue measures, not the prices of individual spacecraft, robots, or services. They also do not establish profit, backlog conversion, launch timing, or the eventual commercial performance of a customer constellation. The figures should always be labeled as MDA Space FY2025 results for the year ended December 31, 2025.

What MDA Space is not

  • Not a consumer space-hardware shop: Its programs involve institutional spacecraft, robotics, data systems, and professional services rather than products normally purchased by households.
  • Not automatically the owner of every named mission: MDA can be a prime contractor, subsystem supplier, integrator, or operator while a customer owns the network or mission.
  • Not only a robotic-arm company: Canadarm heritage is important, but Satellite Systems and Geointelligence are separate major business areas.
  • Not a public imagery guarantee: An Earth-observation constellation may serve restricted government or commercial users; the existence of a program does not prove open public access to all data.
  • Not finished with Canadarm3: The Lunar Gateway arm remains under development according to the FY2025 filing.

Why the distinction between systems and services matters

Space missions create value over long periods, so supplying hardware and operating it are different commercial activities. A satellite manufacturer may complete design and production milestones years before a constellation reaches full service. A robotics provider may earn continuing revenue from training, command planning, maintenance, and mission support after the hardware has been delivered.

For readers evaluating an MDA announcement, identify four things: the customer, the mission, the specific MDA deliverable, and the status. “Customer” tells you who owns or funds the program. “Mission” explains the operational purpose. “Deliverable” distinguishes a satellite bus, payload, robot, software system, or service. “Status” tells you whether the work is proposed, under design, being tested, launched, or operating.

How to interpret future announcements

Program schedules, contract values, and commercialization plans can change. A later announcement may expand or narrow MDA’s role, move a milestone, or report a new customer. When checking an update, use the company’s current program page or annual filing and verify the date and contract scope.

Keep the same discipline used for the FY2025 figures: separate a contract extension from a new-build award, distinguish development from operations, and avoid treating a supplier’s participation as ownership of the end-user service. That approach produces a more accurate picture than simply listing every spacecraft name associated with the company.

Bottom line

MDA Space designs and supplies the infrastructure behind institutional space missions. Satellite Systems builds spacecraft and constellation systems for customers such as Telesat and Globalstar; Geointelligence develops Earth-observation capabilities such as MDA CHORUS; and Robotics & Space Operations applies Canadarm-derived expertise to missions ranging from the International Space Station to lunar exploration and in-space servicing. Canadarm3 is still under development for Lunar Gateway, while ISS robotics support is an operating-services contract. The company’s role is therefore best described as a combination of space-system builder, geointelligence provider, robotics developer, and long-term mission operator.
