Programming with AI means using generative coding assistants or agents during software development—not handing over engineering responsibility. The developer still defines the problem, supplies context, evaluates proposed code, runs it, and decides whether it belongs in the product. AI changes how code is produced, but it does not remove the need to understand requirements, programming concepts, testing, security, or the surrounding codebase.
What “programming with AI” actually means
AI-assisted programming is an umbrella term for workflows in which a model helps with one or more development tasks. A tool may autocomplete a function, explain unfamiliar code, generate a test, convert code between languages, suggest a database query, diagnose an error, or edit several files through an agent-style interface. These are different levels of assistance, even when they are marketed under the same general label.
A useful mental model is “developer plus fast, probabilistic collaborator.” The model can produce plausible code quickly, but it does not automatically know your product requirements, architectural constraints, deployment policies, data model, or security standards. The human developer remains responsible for the goal and the result.

Assistants and agents are not the same workflow
- Inline assistants suggest a line or small block while you work in an editor.
- Chat assistants answer questions, explain code, draft snippets, and propose debugging steps.
- Task-oriented agents can inspect a repository, modify multiple files, run commands, and iterate on errors with less step-by-step prompting.
The 2026 Stack Overflow Developer Survey groups coding assistants and coding agents together. It reports that 65.9% of 17,464 respondents used one of these categories in their work role. That figure shows widespread use among respondents; it does not mean every developer uses an autonomous agent or follows the same process.

What an AI-assisted development cycle looks like
The safest workflow keeps a clear decision point between every major AI action and the code that reaches a shared branch or production system.
- Define the change. Write the desired behavior, constraints, inputs, outputs, error handling, performance expectations, and acceptance criteria. A request such as “add caching” is incomplete unless you specify what may be cached, for how long, and how stale data is handled.
- Inspect the context. Identify the relevant modules, interfaces, conventions, dependency versions, configuration files, and existing tests. Give the tool only the context it needs and avoid sending secrets or personal data.
- Ask for a bounded proposal. Request a plan or a small change before asking for a broad rewrite. State the files that may change and any APIs or style rules that must remain intact.
- Read the proposed diff. Check control flow, edge cases, data validation, error behavior, resource use, licensing implications, and consistency with local patterns. Treat generated code as an untrusted contribution until you understand it.
- Run the code locally. Execute the relevant unit, integration, type, lint, build, and security checks. A response that sounds correct is not evidence that the program works.
- Compare with the codebase. Look for duplicated abstractions, incompatible naming, incorrect assumptions about framework versions, and changes that bypass existing authorization or observability mechanisms.
- Review and document. Make the final edits yourself, record non-obvious decisions, and submit a normal code review. The same ownership and approval rules should apply whether a human or a model wrote the first draft.
Which developer skills remain essential
Requirements and problem framing
Models can expand an instruction, but they cannot decide what the business or user actually needs. Developers must turn an outcome into testable behavior: identify actors and permissions, define valid and invalid inputs, choose acceptable latency and failure modes, and explain how the feature fits existing workflows. Precise requirements also make AI output easier to evaluate because they provide criteria rather than subjective impressions.
Programming fundamentals and code reading
You still need to understand data structures, control flow, state, interfaces, concurrency, error handling, and the runtime or framework in use. Reading is as important as writing: an AI-generated function may compile while violating an invariant elsewhere in the system. Knowledge of types, memory or resource ownership, HTTP, databases, and version control lets you spot a change that is locally plausible but globally wrong.
Recommended Free Tools
GitHub’s official guidance for learning with Copilot recommends using it as a companion rather than relying on it to write everything. It says, “This will give you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of programming concepts by writing more code yourself.” The advice is aimed at learners, but the underlying principle applies to professional work: preserve enough hands-on understanding to explain and maintain the result.

Repository and architecture awareness
Useful prompts depend on context that is often not in a ticket: which service owns a record, where authorization is enforced, how migrations are deployed, what logging format operations teams expect, and which compatibility promises exist. Developers must navigate the repository, trace a request across layers, and recognize architectural boundaries. An agent that edits five files cannot replace someone who knows whether those files are the right five.
Testing and verification
Verification is part of programming with AI, not an optional final polish. The 2026 Stack Overflow survey reports that respondents said they validate AI output by running it locally (76%), comparing it with their codebase (64%), or checking tests or security (53%). These are overlapping survey responses, not mutually exclusive groups and not a measurement of how effective each check was.
Use several layers of evidence:
- Unit tests for individual rules and edge cases.
- Integration or end-to-end tests for contracts between components.
- Type checking, linting, formatting, and build checks for structural errors.
- Security review for authentication, authorization, injection, secrets, dependency risk, and unsafe data handling.
- Manual or exploratory checks for user experience and failure messages.
Debugging and causal reasoning
When a generated fix fails, you need to determine why rather than repeatedly asking for another patch. Reproduce the failure, isolate the smallest failing case, inspect logs and state, form a hypothesis, and test it. This skill prevents a cycle in which each new suggestion hides the original defect or introduces a second one.
Security, privacy, and risk judgment
Models may reproduce insecure patterns, invent dependencies, expose sensitive values in prompts, or omit authorization checks. Developers must know the threat model for the application and the organization’s rules for source code and data handling. High-impact domains require stronger review, traceability, and human approval than a disposable prototype.

Communication and maintainability
Generated code still has human readers. Clear names, focused functions, comments that explain decisions, useful commit messages, and reviewable diffs reduce the cost of future changes. You also need to communicate assumptions to teammates and explain why an AI-suggested approach was accepted or rejected.
How to evaluate an AI-generated change
Use a repeatable checklist instead of judging output by fluency or length.
| Question | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Does it meet the requirement? | Acceptance criteria, supported cases, rejected cases, and user-visible behavior. |
| Does it fit this codebase? | Existing interfaces, naming, error conventions, dependency versions, and architectural boundaries. |
| Is it correct under failure? | Timeouts, retries, null or empty values, partial writes, concurrency, and rollback behavior. |
| Is it safe? | Input validation, authorization, secret handling, injection resistance, dependency provenance, and data exposure. |
| Can the team maintain it? | Readability, test coverage, observability, documentation, and the size of the diff. |
| Is there evidence? | Local execution, automated tests, type and build checks, and review of the actual diff. |
Does AI make programmers more productive?
There is no settled universal answer. Results depend on the task, repository, developer experience, tool behavior, and how much verification is required. A short, well-specified transformation may benefit from assistance; an unfamiliar system with hidden dependencies can take longer when every suggestion needs investigation.

How to learn programming with AI without losing fundamentals
Learning routes are changing, but they are not converging on one best method. In the 2026 Stack Overflow learning data, respondents answering how they learned to code for AI selected AI code-generation tools or AI-enabled apps at 50.6%, other online resources at 45.0%, technical documentation at 42.5%, and books or physical media at 7.7% (n = 20,565; multi-select responses). For learning to code generally, technical documentation was selected by 58.9%, AI tools by 52.6%, and other online resources by 51.7% (n = 14,530).
A durable study loop is:
- Learn a concept from documentation, a course, or a book.
- Write a small implementation yourself before requesting a complete solution.
- Ask the AI to explain alternatives, invariants, and likely failure cases.
- Test your implementation with examples you designed, including boundary cases.
- Compare the explanation with authoritative documentation and correct misunderstandings.
- Refactor or extend the code without assistance to confirm that you can maintain it.
For readers who prefer print, Coding with AI by Jeremy Morgan was published by Manning in October 2025 and is described by its publisher as a practical guide for working developers. Rheinwerk also lists the 2025 paperback AI-Assisted Coding: The Practical Guide for Software Development. Publisher pages establish that these books exist; they do not establish current retail stock, price, or that either is the best choice for every learner.
How to choose an AI workflow for a task
Compare a workflow on the task, not on marketing claims. These questions help you select an appropriate level of assistance:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- What is being assisted? A completion, explanation, test, refactor, repository-wide change, or operational diagnosis has different risks.
- How much context is available? A local snippet, an open file, selected modules, or an indexed repository each supports different conclusions.
- Can you inspect the change? Prefer a clear diff and an explicit list of files over invisible edits.
- What checks can run locally? Favor workflows that make tests, type checks, security scans, and builds easy to execute.
- Is the goal learning or delivery? During learning, ask for hints and explanations and write more of the code yourself; during delivery, optimize for a reviewable, tested change without bypassing understanding.
These are decision criteria, not a ranking of particular products. The survey identifies broad assistant and agent categories, but it does not establish that one tool is superior on context, accuracy, or productivity.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The code compiles but violates a requirement
Fix this by rewriting the acceptance criteria as executable tests or concrete examples before asking for another change. Include forbidden behavior, not only the happy path.
The model assumes the wrong framework version
State the language, framework, runtime, and dependency versions. Point to an existing implementation in the repository and verify every API against the versioned documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA broad agent edit is difficult to review
Split the work into smaller tasks, limit writable files, ask for a plan first, and review each diff before proceeding. Revert unrelated formatting or refactoring.
Tests pass but security is weaker
Add security-specific checks and review authorization, validation, secrets, and dependency changes separately. Functional tests do not prove that a system is safe.
The developer stops learning
Use the tool to explain and challenge your reasoning, not only to supply answers. Re-implement small features, predict the output before running it, and periodically work without suggestions.
What developers should expect next
AI-assisted programming is already a common development practice among survey respondents, but the evidence does not settle long-term employment effects, the future value of every skill, or an ideal amount of AI use. The durable advantage is not producing the most generated code. It is being able to define a worthwhile change, understand the system it enters, verify behavior with evidence, and take responsibility for the result.
