Being a good AI ancestor means making technology decisions today with the people who inherit their consequences in mind. It is an ethical lens, not a certification or a settled technical term: weigh present benefits against future risks, rights, dependencies, institutions, knowledge and environmental conditions. In practice, it combines long-term thinking with established guidance on human rights, safety, accountability, inclusion, transparency and ecological stewardship.
A working definition
A good AI ancestor asks what today’s choices leave behind. The inheritance can be beneficial: safer services, accessible knowledge, scientific capability, stronger public institutions and tools that expand human agency. It can also be damaging: discriminatory decisions embedded in software, surveillance infrastructure, concentrated power, unsafe autonomous behavior, environmental degradation, or social systems that become difficult to replace.
The phrase has no single formal definition in AI policy or engineering. It is a synthesis of two traditions. Long-term-thinking work asks people to overcome short-term incentives and consider distant consequences. Contemporary AI ethics guidance supplies practical duties concerning rights, safety, accountability, participation, transparency and environmental protection. Used together, they create a disciplined question: Will this decision leave future people with more ability to flourish and govern their lives, or with risks and constraints they did not choose?

Why AI decisions can become an inheritance
Systems outlast their launch teams
Models are updated, copied, integrated into other products and used after their original designers have moved on. A training-data choice or an access-control shortcut can therefore affect people who had no role in making it. Procurement contracts, technical standards and public-sector deployments can also become institutional habits that are expensive to unwind.
Benefits and burdens are distributed differently
An AI service may create convenience or profit for one group while shifting error, monitoring or job-transition costs to another. A good-ancestor analysis identifies who receives the benefit, who bears the risk, and whether people with the least power have meaningful ways to refuse, appeal or obtain remedy.
Environmental conditions are part of the inheritance
Computing infrastructure consumes energy, water and physical materials. The relevant ethical question is not only whether a model performs well, but whether its scale, lifetime and replacement cycle are compatible with the environmental conditions future communities will need. UNESCO’s 2021 Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence expressly includes protecting the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems.

Capability can create dependency
Automation may improve access while weakening human skills, local capacity or institutional memory. Ask what happens if the provider withdraws the service, the model becomes unavailable, or an organization can no longer explain a decision without it. Resilience includes retaining human expertise and workable alternatives.
The six-part long-term-thinking framework
In a 2022 review of Roman Krznaric’s The Good Ancestor: How to Think Long Term in a Short-Term World, Hector Dlamini describes six elements of the book’s framework. They are useful prompts for AI governance, but they are not an official AI standard or a compliance test.
| Element | Meaning for an AI decision | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Deep-time humility | Recognize that a product cycle or election cycle is brief compared with the life of institutions, ecosystems and communities. | What might remain after the current team, vendor or funding period ends? Which assumptions are likely to age badly? |
| Legacy mindset | Judge a decision by what it leaves for others, not only by immediate performance. | Will successors inherit useful knowledge and maintainable systems, or opaque obligations and unresolved hazards? |
| Intergenerational justice | Consider whether future people receive fair opportunities rather than merely absorbing today’s costs. | Who gains now, who pays later, and are burdens being shifted to people with less political or economic power? |
| Cathedral thinking | Plan for work whose benefits may arrive beyond the original builders’ lifetimes. | What standards, documentation, funding and stewardship must survive personnel changes? |
| Holistic forecasting | Examine interacting social, technical, economic and ecological effects instead of relying on one forecast. | What happens under misuse, failure, regulation, market change or a climate-related disruption? |
| Transcendent goal | Connect the project to a durable public purpose rather than a narrow growth or efficiency target. | What human value justifies this capability, and what outcomes would make deployment unacceptable? |
What established guidance contributes

| Source | Relevant contribution | How to use it | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Nations System Common Principles | Calls for foresight, assessment of future impacts, precaution when uncertainty persists, and mechanisms that represent future generations’ interests. Its heading is “Think, plan and act with future generations in mind.” | Require impact assessment before consequential decisions, document uncertainty, and create a route for future-oriented interests to be considered. | It does not certify a particular model or provide a single numerical measure of intergenerational fairness. |
| UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021) | Sets objectives that include safeguarding the interests of present and future generations and preserving the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems. | Include rights, inclusion, ecological effects and long-term stewardship in policy, procurement and system design. | It is normative guidance, not evidence that any deployed system has achieved those objectives. |
| OECD AI Principles (adopted 2019; updated 2024) | Promote AI “that is innovative and trustworthy and that respects human rights and democratic values.” The principles cover inclusive growth and well-being; human rights and democratic values; transparency and explainability; robustness, security and safety; and accountability. | Translate each principle into ownership, documentation, testing, monitoring and remedy requirements. | The principles do not eliminate trade-offs or predict long-term outcomes with certainty. |
| European Commission intergenerational-fairness work (2025) | Frames fairness as considering present and future generations and emphasizes collaboration, care, accountability and citizen engagement. Its scoping work convened hundreds of participants in workshops, dialogues and online consultations. | Use participatory processes to surface whose future is being planned and to challenge assumptions made by technical or political insiders. | Participation alone does not settle conflicts between current needs and future interests. |
A practical method for making AI decisions as a good ancestor
The following sequence turns the principles into a repeatable deliberation. These are editorial questions derived from the cited guidance, not a validated scoring system.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Define the decision and its lifespan. State exactly what is being built, bought, trained, deployed or retired. Record the intended users, affected non-users, geographic scope, expected operating period and decisions the system may influence.
- Map benefits, burdens and power. List who benefits immediately, who bears error, surveillance, exclusion, labor or environmental costs, and who has authority to change the system. Include people affected indirectly and communities that are usually missing from design meetings.
- Identify rights and democratic interests. Determine whether the system affects privacy, expression, equality, due process, access to essential services or political participation. Specify a human decision-maker and a meaningful appeal route wherever a person may be disadvantaged.
- Build several plausible scenarios. Consider ordinary operation, predictable misuse, malicious attack, model drift, provider failure, regulatory change and resource shortages. Include scenarios in which the system is adopted far beyond its original audience.
- Apply precaution to severe or irreversible harm. If evidence is incomplete, do not treat uncertainty as evidence of safety. Test in a limited setting, restrict access, add monitoring and define stop conditions before expanding. A safeguard should be stronger when harm would be widespread, difficult to reverse or impossible to remedy later.
- Check transparency and contestability. Document data provenance, known limitations, evaluation results, version changes and responsible owners. Tell affected people when AI is materially involved, explain the factors that matter in a decision, and provide a channel for correction and appeal.
- Plan environmental and capability stewardship. Estimate resource demands over the full lifecycle, including retraining, storage, hardware replacement and retirement. Preserve documentation, staff expertise and an alternative process so that a future team is not trapped by an undocumented dependency.
- Set review and accountability dates. Assign named owners, publish measurable safety and fairness indicators where appropriate, schedule independent review, and record what evidence would trigger a pause, redesign or withdrawal. Reassessment is essential because a long horizon does not make an original forecast permanent.
How the lens changes practice for different roles
For model and product teams
- Write a system card or equivalent record that includes intended use, excluded use, affected groups, limitations, environmental considerations and retirement conditions.
- Evaluate performance across relevant populations and document where data is sparse. Averages can conceal concentrated errors that future users will inherit.
- Design for graceful failure: human override, rate limits, logging, rollback and a way to operate essential functions without the model.
- Treat user feedback and complaints as governance evidence, not merely support tickets. Preserve decisions and rationale so successors can audit them.
For organizations deploying AI
- Make procurement conditional on access to documentation, incident reporting, security updates, audit cooperation and a workable exit plan.
- Define which decisions may be assisted and which require human judgment. Do not let convenience silently expand an experimental tool into a high-impact gatekeeper.
- Train staff to recognize uncertainty, automation bias and disparate impact. Give them authority to stop use when safeguards fail.
For policymakers and public institutions
- Require impact assessments before deployment in high-consequence settings and make summaries understandable to affected residents.
- Provide independent oversight, public consultation and accessible complaint mechanisms. Representation of future interests can include long-term budget analysis, environmental review and institutions charged with stewardship.
- Coordinate standards so that safety, transparency and accountability do not disappear when a system crosses organizational or national borders.
For individual users and educators
- Ask what information a tool retains, how its outputs may affect other people and what recourse exists when it is wrong.
- Teach the difference between a fluent answer and a justified one. Preserving critical skills is part of preventing dependency.
- Prefer uses that expand agency and accessibility without making essential opportunities contingent on an opaque prediction.
Trade-offs a good-ancestor lens must not hide
Current needs still matter
Intergenerational fairness is not a license to sacrifice people living now for an imagined future. The European Commission’s framing explicitly considers present and future generations together. A project that imposes severe current harm in the name of distant benefits fails the test of care even if its forecast is optimistic.
Uncertainty is not an excuse for paralysis
Precaution should be proportionate. A reversible pilot with clear monitoring can be preferable to either unrestricted deployment or a blanket ban. The relevant distinction is between learning safely and committing people to harms that cannot readily be undone.

Long-term goals can conflict
Reducing energy use, improving access, protecting privacy and preserving democratic control may point in different directions. Make the conflict explicit, involve affected communities and record why one course was chosen. There is no universal formula that converts all these values into a single score.
Good intentions can become lock-in
A system introduced for a narrow public benefit may later be reused for enforcement, employment screening or surveillance. Access controls, purpose limits, expiration dates and independent review help prevent a benevolent origin story from becoming permanent authorization.
Worked examples
An automated benefits-screening tool
A short-term efficiency case might emphasize faster processing. A good-ancestor analysis also asks whether applicants can understand and challenge denials, whether error falls disproportionately on people with limited records, how long decisions and data are retained, and whether a future agency can replace the vendor. A staged deployment with human review, appeal rights, audit logs and a contractual exit path addresses more of the inheritance than accuracy testing alone.

A general-purpose model offered to schools
Potential benefits include tutoring and accessibility support. Risks include fabricated explanations, privacy loss, overreliance and unequal access. Stewardship would involve age-appropriate safeguards, clear disclosure, teacher control, data minimization, source-checking education and a plan for maintaining student skills if the service changes or disappears.
A resource-intensive model upgrade
A larger model may improve some capabilities while increasing energy, water or hardware demands. The responsible comparison is lifecycle-based: measure whether the benefit is material, consider a smaller model or caching, publish relevant environmental information, and establish conditions for retiring an inefficient version. The point is not to assume that every large model is unacceptable, but to treat ecological capacity as part of system quality.
A concise good-ancestor checklist
- Have we named the people who benefit and the people who may carry the costs?
- Could this decision create a dependency, norm or infrastructure that is hard to reverse?
- What severe harms remain possible under misuse, failure or future expansion?
- Can affected people know, challenge and correct an AI-assisted decision?
- Are rights, inclusion, safety, security, democratic values and environmental effects documented?
- Who is accountable after the original team leaves, and what evidence triggers review or shutdown?
- What knowledge, skills and alternatives will future users inherit?

Readers interested in the underlying long-term-thinking framework can consult Roman Krznaric’s The Good Ancestor: How to Think Long Term in a Short-Term World. The book is about long-term thinking broadly, not specifically about artificial intelligence. The United Nations System Common Principles, UNESCO’s 2021 Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and the OECD AI Principles provide public frameworks for connecting that perspective with rights, safety, accountability and environmental stewardship.

The bottom line
To be a good AI ancestor is to treat every significant AI choice as a bequest. Build useful capability, but also preserve rights, contestability, safety, ecological capacity, human skill and the freedom of future people to choose differently. Because no one can know the future with certainty, the durable practice is humble forecasting combined with precaution, participation, documentation, accountability and repeated review.
