It means the planets’ gravitational interactions can gradually change their orbits, and that some modeled paths could eventually lead to a close encounter or collision. It does not mean the Solar System is about to fall apart. The planets can be chaotic in the mathematical sense—making precise predictions far into the future difficult—while remaining remarkably stable over billions of years.
Chaos and instability are not the same thing
Chaos describes predictability. In a chaotic system, tiny differences in starting conditions can grow over time, so two nearly identical calculations eventually produce noticeably different trajectories.
Instability describes physical change. In this context, it refers to orbital changes that could become large enough to produce close encounters, collisions, or other major outcomes. Chaotic motion does not by itself mean that such an outcome is imminent—or even that it will occur.

Why planetary orbits can change
Planets do not travel around the Sun in isolation. Each planet’s gravity perturbs the others, and those small influences accumulate. Resonances—relationships between repeating orbital motions—can reinforce changes. The Annual Reviews discussion identifies overlapping resonances as a source of chaos and describes secular resonances among the mechanisms relevant to the inner Solar System.
There is no single mechanism that explains every possible long-term change. The outcomes also depend on which objects are considered and how far into the future a calculation runs.

What the timescales do—and do not—tell us
| Timescale | What it refers to | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Hundreds of thousands of years | A 2001 Annual Reviews paper says planetary trajectories can be predicted on this broad timescale. | It is not a guarantee of identical forecast accuracy for every planet or observable. |
| About 5 million years | A 2023 study in Physical Review X reports this as the Lyapunov time for chaotic variations in the inner planets. | It is not a countdown to a collision or to the Solar System becoming unstable. |
| Billions of years | The 2023 study describes the inner planets as remarkably stable over this span despite their chaotic motion. | It does not mean every possible trajectory remains unchanged or that precise predictions are possible throughout. |
The important distinction is between a predictability horizon and a time to a physical event. A Lyapunov time indicates how quickly initially similar trajectories can diverge; it does not say when an orbit will become dangerous.
Could a planet eventually collide or be ejected?
The long-term scenario most often discussed for the inner planets
Mercury’s orbit is a focus of long-term instability studies. If its eccentricity grew sufficiently, Mercury could have a close encounter with Venus or plunge into the Sun. A 2020 Nature Reviews Physics research highlight summarizes numerical work as estimating about a 1% chance of this kind of Mercury-related instability over the Sun’s remaining five billion years.

- Fun learning tool: You and your kids had a great time painting and putting this together and learnt a lot about the planets in the process. It was a decent lesson representing the Solar system for a young child. Perfect for handmade craft, DIY decoration, school project, science projects and more.
That figure is a probability across modeled trajectories, not a prediction that an event will happen, a date for it, or a guarantee that every model gives exactly the same estimate. It describes an extremely long horizon, not a near-term danger.
Early formation is a different story
“Instability” can also describe the violent early stages of planetary-system formation. NASA’s account of Solar System formation places a particularly turbulent interval in our system around 50–500 million years after the Sun formed. That period concerns the system’s early history, not the present-day stability of the planets.

Young planetary systems and some other systems can also undergo intersecting orbits, collisions, inward migration, or ejection. These examples explain how instability can be used in a broader setting; they are not direct predictions about the present Solar System. NASA describes these kinds of processes in its overview of planetary systems.

How to read claims that the Solar System is “unstable”
- Check the time horizon. A claim about millions or billions of years is not a statement about what will happen soon.
- Check what “unstable” means. It might mean reduced predictability, changing eccentricity or inclination, a close encounter, collision, or ejection. Those are different outcomes.
- Check whether the result is a probability or a prediction. A fraction of simulated trajectories is not a forecast of one known future path.
- Check the scope. Findings about inner planets, small bodies, early formation, or young and exoplanet systems cannot automatically be applied to every part of today’s Solar System.
