There is no responsible single price. Restoring a 1970s classic can mean making a running car safe, repairing selected rust and trim, rebuilding every mechanical system, or creating a concours-level, frame-off vehicle. Those are different projects with radically different labor, parts and risk. The car’s exact make and model, hidden corrosion, previous repairs, parts supply, local specialist rates and the work you can perform yourself determine the bill.

Budget restoration and ownership separately. A written, model-specific inspection and work plan is more useful than an internet average, while annual maintenance cannot be quoted honestly without knowing the car, mileage, climate, storage, location and owner skill.

Four projects that people call a “restoration”

Agree on the end result before asking a shop for a price. A drivable refresh is not financially comparable with a stripped shell and show paint.

Project level What it normally includes How the cost behaves
Roadworthy repair Safety-critical brakes, steering, tires, lights, leaks and basic engine or fuel-system work Can be focused and limited, but a failed inspection may expose structural rust or several unrelated faults.
Tidy driver Roadworthiness plus selected body, paint, upholstery, weather seals and mechanical improvements Costs grow as cosmetic work reveals rust, old filler and damaged trim; priorities should follow how you will use the car.
Complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration Disassembly, body and frame repairs, rebuilt engine and transmission, brakes, electrical system, interior and paint Hundreds of labor hours are possible. Hidden damage and parts delays make the final amount uncertain until teardown.
Frame-off or show build Shell-off structural work, detailed finishes, restored hardware and show-level paint and assembly The most expensive and least predictable option; originality and finish standards can make small components costly.

Write the target in plain language: for example, “safe weekend driver with presentable paint,” not simply “restore it.” That decision prevents paying show-car prices for work you will not see or use.

The main variables that set your restoration budget

Condition, especially what is hidden

Surface paint can conceal perforated metal, filler, poor previous repairs or bent structure. Rust in sills, floors and suspension mounting areas is more consequential than a removable fender blister. A car that appears complete may still need an engine rebuild, wiring replacement or a new interior once it is dismantled. Treat every estimate made before inspection as provisional.

Make, model and parts availability

Popular models with large aftermarket catalogs generally offer more reproduction and used parts than rare imports or unusual specifications. A parts car, salvage yard or owners’ club can provide alternatives, but a cheap part is not a bargain if it does not fit or is unsafe. Verify the exact year, engine, transmission and trim before ordering. Buy for the stage you are actually working on; accumulating boxes of speculative parts creates duplicate purchases and ties up cash.

Labor and specialist capability

Hagerty reported on 22 April 2022 that average mechanic labor charges were “upwards of $70 per hour,” with specialized services higher. That is a dated, broad reference, not a current quote for your region or a complete restoration. Rates vary by state and shop, and a restoration can require hundreds of hours. Ask each shop for its current rate, estimated hours by system, what is included in teardown and assembly, and how additional discoveries will be approved.

Complexity and intended use

Cars that were common daily transportation from the 1950s through the early 1970s are often easier to understand and support than more complex or rare vehicles. More cylinders and additional systems can increase maintenance work and parts expense. Decide whether the car will be a commuter, occasional tourer or static showpiece. A driver may not need flawless paint or every mechanical component rebuilt to new-old-stock standards.

Your own work, tools and time

Owner labor can remove paid hours, but the sources do not establish a reliable dollar saving. Disassembly, cataloging, cleaning and paint-removal work may be suitable if you have safe space, tools and experience. Precision machining, structural welding, paint spraying, brake hydraulics and complex electrical diagnosis can become more expensive when a professional must correct mistakes. Count your time, equipment rental, consumables and the cost of transporting an unfinished car.

Inspect the car before you buy it

A model-specific inspection is the most valuable spending decision in a project. Hagerty’s UK guidance emphasizes that bodywork can expand substantially when rust is hidden by filler or paint. Although that guidance is UK-focused, the inspection principles apply elsewhere.

  1. Identify the exact specification. Record model, body style, year, engine, transmission, factory options and any conversions. Parts catalogs and known weak points depend on these details.
  2. Examine the underside. Put the car on a lift when possible. Check floors, sills, chassis rails, jacking points, suspension mounts and brake or fuel lines. Probe suspicious repairs and look for fresh underseal that may hide corrosion.
  3. Look for evidence of previous bodywork. Uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, filler edges, welds and overspray can reveal accident repairs or corrosion cut-outs. Ask for photographs or invoices from earlier work.
  4. Assess completeness. Missing model-specific trim, instruments, seats, glass, emblems and brackets may be harder to replace than mechanical parts. Confirm that removed components are included and labeled.
  5. Test systems without forcing them. Check cold-start behavior, oil pressure, charging, cooling, clutch, gearbox, brakes, steering, lights and accessories. A non-running car should be priced as an unknown, not as a running example.
  6. Get an independent written report. Have a marque specialist list urgent safety repairs, structural work, likely rebuilds and cosmetic defects separately. Use the report to set a purchase price and a restoration ceiling.

Build a written restoration estimate

Separate known work from contingencies. A useful worksheet has a row for every system and records parts, labor hours, outside services, tax or shipping where applicable, and the evidence supporting the estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the finish target. Choose roadworthy driver, tidy driver or show standard. State which imperfections you will accept.
  2. Inventory the car. Photograph and label every part during disassembly. Mark items as reusable, repairable, replaceable or unknown.
  3. Price structural and body work first. Rust repair, panel fabrication, alignment, preparation and paint can determine whether the project is economically sensible. Include hidden areas, not just visible panels.
  4. Estimate each mechanical system. List engine, cooling, fuel, exhaust, transmission, clutch, differential, driveshaft, suspension, steering, brakes, wheels and tires. Distinguish inspection from a rebuild.
  5. Add electrical and interior work. Wiring faults, missing instruments, rubber seals, headliners, carpets, seat foam and dashboard components are common separate expenses.
  6. Request itemized shop quotes. Ask for labor hours, hourly rates, parts markups, machine-shop charges, storage fees, warranty terms and the process for approving change orders.
  7. Set a contingency for discoveries. Do not treat an initial quote as a guarantee when the shell or drivetrain has not been opened. Keep contingency money separate from the planned work so a surprise does not stop the car midway.
  8. Compare the total with the finished car. Use realistic sale prices for comparable, correctly specified cars in your market. Include the purchase price and transport, not only workshop invoices.

How to compare two cars or two shop estimates

The cheapest project is often the one with the best structure and the most complete parts, not the lowest asking price. Compare candidates on the same seven axes:

  • Shop rate, estimated hours, contingency, storage and warranty.
  • Your tools, workspace, skills and available time for DIY work.
  • Purchase price plus likely restoration expense versus realistic finished value and intended use.

Ask a shop to quote the same written scope for each car. Otherwise, a low bid may simply exclude rust repair, disassembly, paint preparation or final tuning.

Restoration costs and resale value

Do not assume a restoration will pay for itself. Hagerty notes that recovering the full restoration cost is unlikely except for unusually rare or high-value cars. Paint, labor and hidden repairs do not automatically increase market value dollar for dollar, and a modified car may appeal to fewer buyers.

Make a financial comparison before starting: purchase price + transport + planned work + contingency + storage while incomplete. Then compare that figure with realistic values for a finished car of the same model, specification and quality. Proceeding can still be rational when the car has family meaning or the work itself is the goal; treat enjoyment and learning as nonfinancial returns rather than promising an investment profit.

What annual maintenance includes

Maintenance is a recurring ownership budget, separate from the one-time restoration. The reviewed ownership guidance does not publish a current annual dollar amount that applies to every 1970s classic. A usable figure requires the exact car, engine, annual mileage, climate, storage pattern, location, owner skill and a decision about whether insurance, fuel, registration and rented storage are included.

Routine service

  • Change engine oil and other fluids according to the model’s service schedule and actual use.
  • Inspect brake linings or pads, drums or rotors, hoses, lines and fluid condition.
  • Check belts, cooling hoses, fuel lines, steering and suspension joints for age-related deterioration.
  • Service the points, plugs, carburetor or injection system and ignition components where the model requires them.
  • Inspect tires for age, cracking, pressure and correct load rating, not just tread depth.
  • Lubricate chassis points and hinges specified by the manufacturer.
  • Keep a dated log of parts, fluids, adjustments and receipts.

Model-specific interval work

Some cars have expensive scheduled jobs unrelated to mileage alone. Hagerty gives timing-belt service on Porsche 944s and some Ferraris as examples; those examples are not 1970s-specific estimates. Use the service schedule for your exact engine and record when belts, chains, tensioners, coolant and other time-sensitive parts were replaced.

Seasonal storage

If the car is stored, budget for a dry, secure space and the work needed to recommission it. Consider removing the battery or using a suitable battery tender, adding fuel stabilizer, protecting the tires and checking for moisture or pests. Before driving after storage, inspect brakes, fluids, hoses, tires and fuel leaks rather than assuming the last running condition remains safe.

Ways to control cost without creating new problems

Spend first on structure and safety

Prioritize chassis integrity, suspension mounting points, steering, braking, tires, fuel containment and reliable wiring. Shiny paint cannot compensate for unsafe structure.

Preserve usable original parts

Correctly refurbished original trim, hardware and instruments may be more valuable than inaccurate reproductions. Clean, test and catalog parts before discarding them, while replacing components that are unsafe or beyond economic repair.

Use DIY selectively

Disassembly, parts cleaning, documentation and paint-removal grunt work can reduce paid labor when performed competently. Leave structural welding, machining, brake-system rebuilding and specialist paint to qualified professionals unless you have the training, equipment and safe workspace.

Buy in sequence

Order components after measurements and teardown confirm what is needed. Check fitment, return rules and condition for used parts. This approach reduces duplicate purchases when a supposedly reusable assembly turns out to be worn.

Common budgeting mistakes

  • Using a single internet average: a $70-plus hourly figure from 2022 is not a current local restoration quote.
  • Ignoring the underside: concealed sill, floor or suspension rust can dominate the project.
  • Pricing only visible cosmetics: paint often follows metal repair, alignment, disassembly and reassembly.
  • Assuming completeness: missing trim and interior pieces can be expensive or impossible to source.
  • Counting unpaid labor as free: your time, tools, consumables and rework have real opportunity costs.
  • Starting without a stopping rule: define a maximum spend and a decision point if structural damage exceeds it.
  • Mixing ownership costs into restoration: track restoration, routine service, insurance, fuel, registration and storage as separate categories.

A practical decision rule

Buy or continue a project when the structure is sound or repairable, the essential parts are obtainable, the work scope matches your intended use, and the combined cost fits your financial and time limits. Walk away or change the goal when the shell has extensive unknown corrosion, critical parts are missing, the shop cannot provide a controlled estimate, or the finished value and personal benefit no longer justify the commitment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The honest answer to “What will I spend on parts and labor?” is therefore a model-specific range built from inspection, written scope, current local rates and a contingency—not a universal 1970s-car number. Plan recurring service and storage as a second budget, keep records throughout ownership, and let safety and intended use determine where the money goes.
