iCloud+ is Apple’s paid iCloud subscription. It increases storage beyond the free 5GB and adds privacy, email, event-planning and smart-home camera features. In the United States, Apple currently lists plans from 50GB at $0.99 per month to 12TB at $59.99 per month. Whether it is worth paying for depends on how much storage you use, whether you can share with family, which extras you need and whether an Apple One subscription already covers you.
The practical test is simple: if 5GB is enough and you will not use the included features, keep the free tier. If backups, photos or files exceed that allowance—or a household can share one plan—iCloud+ is often a convenient upgrade.
What iCloud+ is
Every Apple Account gets 5GB of iCloud storage at no charge. That space is used for services such as device backups, iCloud Photos and files stored in iCloud Drive. Once the allowance becomes too small, iCloud+ adds a larger storage pool and a set of features that are unavailable on the free tier.

iCloud+ plans and US prices
Apple currently lists five paid storage levels for US customers. The prices below are monthly amounts displayed by Apple at the time of writing; taxes, currency and local pricing can differ elsewhere.
| Storage | US price per month | HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance |
|---|---|---|
| 50GB | $0.99 | One camera |
| 200GB | $2.99 | Up to five cameras |
| 2TB | $9.99 | Unlimited cameras |
| 6TB | $29.99 | Unlimited cameras |
| 12TB | $59.99 | Unlimited cameras |
The 50GB plan is ten times the free allowance, but it is still a shared pool for everything that uses your iCloud storage. A large photo library or several device backups can consume it quickly. The 200GB plan provides more headroom for one person or a small family. The 2TB, 6TB and 12TB options are aimed at households with substantial photo, video and backup needs; the higher tiers do not provide more camera capacity than “unlimited,” so their main justification is storage.

Before buying, open Apple’s page for your country and confirm the recurring price.
What every iCloud+ plan includes
More iCloud storage
Paid plans replace the free 5GB allowance with 50GB, 200GB, 2TB, 6TB or 12TB. Apple associates the storage with backups, photos and files, so examine your current iCloud usage and expected growth rather than choosing only by the lowest monthly price. A plan that is nearly full leaves little room for the next backup or a new batch of photos.

iCloud Private Relay
Private Relay is designed to protect Safari browsing and unencrypted internet traffic. Apple’s terms explain that traffic is encrypted and sent through at least two internet relays, separating the user’s identity from the sites they visit. It is not established in Apple’s cited material as a full-device VPN, so do not assume that every app or connection is covered in the same way.
There are trade-offs. Apple notes that some websites can behave unexpectedly, availability differs by region, and some sites may ask for additional sign-in steps. Private Relay can also affect an internet provider’s ability to exempt that traffic from a usage cap. If a site stops working normally, temporarily changing the Private Relay setting or completing the extra verification may be necessary. See Apple’s iCloud Terms & Conditions for the documented relay and traffic limitations.
Hide My Email
Hide My Email creates unique, random email addresses that forward to your personal inbox. You can give a different address to a retailer, newsletter or online service without exposing your main address. If one address begins attracting unwanted mail, you can stop using that alias while keeping your primary inbox unchanged. The feature is useful even when your storage needs are modest, because its value comes from reducing address sharing rather than from consuming cloud space.
Custom Email Domain
Subscribers can use a domain they own with iCloud Mail. A custom domain can make a personal or family email address look consistent with a website or family name. You must own the domain and still need to follow Apple’s setup and verification requirements; iCloud+ does not supply a domain name by itself.
Apple Invites
Apple lists access to event creation and management in Apple Invites as an iCloud+ subscription feature. This is aimed at people who want to create invitations and coordinate events inside Apple’s ecosystem. If you rarely organize events, it should not by itself determine which storage tier you buy.

HomeKit Secure Video
HomeKit Secure Video records and lets you view footage from compatible cameras in Apple’s Home app. The plan controls the number of cameras: one on 50GB, up to five on 200GB and unlimited cameras on 2TB, 6TB or 12TB.
The camera allowance is not a guarantee that any security camera will work. Apple requires a compatible HomeKit-enabled camera and supported home hub hardware. A camera advertised only as “smart home” or “HomeKit compatible” may not support HomeKit Secure Video specifically, so verify that exact feature before buying equipment. Details and compatibility requirements are listed on Apple’s iCloud+ plans and pricing page.
Sharing iCloud+ with family
Any iCloud+ plan can be shared with up to five other members of an Apple Family Sharing group. Everyone draws from the plan’s storage pool, while Apple says each person’s files and personal information remain separate and private. Family members do not automatically gain access to one another’s photos, backups or documents merely because storage is shared.
Sharing changes the value calculation. A 200GB plan may be less expensive per person than several individual upgrades, provided the household’s combined usage fits. Conversely, a nearly full shared plan can affect everyone, so check the family’s total storage use before selecting a tier. The family-sharing details are documented by Apple on its plan page and related support material.
How Apple One changes the decision
Apple says every Apple One plan includes iCloud+. If you already pay for Apple One, first check how much iCloud storage that bundle supplies and whether it covers your household. Buying a separate iCloud+ plan may be unnecessary when the included allowance is sufficient.

Apple also says a separate iCloud+ plan can be combined with Apple One for more total storage. That can make sense when you want Apple One’s other services and still need additional storage, but compare the complete monthly bundle with the services your household actually uses. Do not count iCloud+ as an entirely separate purchase if it is already part of a bundle you would keep.
When iCloud+ is worth paying for
Your free 5GB is no longer enough
This is the clearest reason to subscribe. If backups fail, Photos or iCloud Drive approaches the limit, or you routinely delete data to make room, the 50GB plan removes the immediate constraint for $0.99 per month in the US. Estimate near-term growth before choosing: moving from 50GB to 200GB costs $2 more per month in the US and provides four times the paid storage.
You will use a feature, not just the storage
Hide My Email, Private Relay, a custom email domain, Apple Invites or HomeKit Secure Video can justify the subscription for someone who values that specific capability. A person with ample free storage but a compatible camera system, for example, may choose iCloud+ for secure video rather than for backups. The feature must match your actual setup; HomeKit Secure Video requires compatible camera and hub hardware, and Private Relay has regional and website-compatibility limits.
A family can share one plan
Up to five additional family members can share the storage without a second iCloud+ charge. Calculate the household’s total usage and compare one shared plan with the cost of separate accounts. Privacy is preserved at the account level, but capacity is shared, so leave room for growth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou already want Apple One
If Apple One replaces services you would otherwise pay for, its included iCloud+ allowance can be part of the value. Check the bundle’s storage before adding another subscription, and add standalone iCloud+ only when the combined allowance is needed.

When iCloud+ may not be worth it
- The free 5GB comfortably covers your backups, photos and files.
- You do not want another recurring bill and will not use the privacy, email, event or camera features.
- Your Apple One plan already provides enough iCloud storage.
- Your cameras are not compatible with HomeKit Secure Video or you do not have the required home hub.
- Private Relay’s regional availability or website behavior conflicts with how you use the internet.
These are practical value judgments based on Apple’s listed prices and features, not a universal consumer-value guarantee. Your storage pattern and household setup decide the outcome.
Choosing the right tier
- Check current usage. Look at the iCloud storage breakdown on your Apple devices and identify whether photos, backups or files are the main consumers.
- Estimate the next year. Include additional device backups, expected photo or video growth and any family members you plan to add.
- Match capacity to people. If you use Family Sharing, add the household’s usage and keep spare capacity instead of selecting a plan that is already nearly full.
- Check camera requirements. Count HomeKit Secure Video cameras only if the cameras and home hub meet Apple’s compatibility requirements.
- Compare regional pricing. Use Apple’s local pricing page; the US amounts above do not apply everywhere.
- Account for Apple One. Subtract the iCloud+ storage already included in a bundle before deciding whether an additional plan is necessary.
- Value the extras. If you will not use Hide My Email, Private Relay, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites or HomeKit Secure Video, base the decision primarily on storage and sharing.
For many individuals, 50GB is the economical first step. A family with several devices often needs 200GB. The 2TB, 6TB and 12TB plans make sense when the household’s measured usage—not the camera limit alone—requires that much space.
Subscribing, changing plans and checking the fine print
Apple provides an iPhone subscription guide at Subscribe to iCloud+ on iPhone. On your iPhone, open the Apple Account’s iCloud storage settings, review the available tiers and confirm the recurring price shown for your region before completing the purchase. The exact labels can vary with iOS version and country.

If you cancel, Apple says you lose access to the extra storage and iCloud+ features. Therefore, do not assume that over-quota data will remain indefinitely unchanged; consult Apple’s current cancellation guidance and reduce usage or export important data before the plan ends.
A quick decision framework
| Your situation | Likely decision | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Usage stays below 5GB and no extras matter | Stay on the free tier | Leave room for future backups and photos |
| One person needs more than 5GB | Consider 50GB or 200GB | Current usage and expected growth |
| Several family members need storage | Compare a shared 200GB or larger plan | Total household usage and Family Sharing membership |
| Several compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras | Consider 2TB, 6TB or 12TB for unlimited cameras | Camera and home hub compatibility |
| Already subscribed to Apple One | Use its included iCloud+ first | Bundle allowance versus actual usage |
| Main goal is privacy or email tools | Choose the smallest tier that meets storage needs | Private Relay availability and feature usefulness in your region |
Bottom line
iCloud+ is worth paying for when the free 5GB is a real constraint, when a family can share one plan, or when you will actively use one of its privacy, email, event or HomeKit Secure Video features. It is not automatically good value for someone who stays under 5GB, already has enough storage through Apple One or does not need the extras. Start with measured usage, apply your local price and confirm compatibility before committing to a recurring subscription.
