HFCL Limited is an Indian telecommunications and technology-infrastructure company with two core commercial engines: it sells optical-fiber, networking and telecom equipment, and it designs and delivers communications networks through turnkey contracts. It also reports a separate defence-products-and-services business. In the latest complete audited year, ended March 31, 2026, Telecom Products generated the largest share of consolidated revenue, while Turnkey Contracts and Services remained a substantial second activity.

HFCL’s business in one sentence

HFCL combines manufacturing with systems integration. Its product business supplies physical and electronic equipment used in communications networks; its project business combines equipment, engineering and implementation to deliver complete network systems for customers such as telecom operators, defence organisations, railways, government programmes and infrastructure developers.

That mix matters because HFCL is not simply a cable manufacturer and not solely an engineering contractor. Its financial statements separate revenue from products, turnkey contracts and services, defence products and services, and a smaller “Others” category.

What HFCL makes and delivers

Optical-fiber and telecom products

The Telecom Products segment principally earns money by selling optical fiber, optical-fiber cable and telecom equipment. These products form the physical and electronic layer of carrier and enterprise networks. Optical fiber and cable carry data over long distances; active equipment routes, aggregates or transmits that traffic.

  • No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty

HFCL’s stated portfolio also includes 5G radio-access and transport products, Wi-Fi systems, high-capacity backhaul radios, switches and routers. The portfolio description shows the company’s capabilities, but it should not be read as proof that every listed product generated material revenue in a particular year.

For readers comparing HFCL with consumer electronics brands, the commercial context is important. “Fiber optic cable” is a useful broad product description, but HFCL’s disclosed cable business serves telecom and infrastructure customers. A consumer patch cable found in an online marketplace is not necessarily equivalent to HFCL’s enterprise-grade supply, and there is no basis to assume HFCL sells through Amazon or another consumer channel.

Turnkey communications networks

Under Turnkey Contracts and Services, HFCL creates and delivers communication-network systems and related infrastructure. A customer can therefore buy a working network outcome rather than separate components. The work can involve network design, equipment supply, deployment and associated implementation for telecom operators, defence services, railways, Safe and Smart Cities and other infrastructure programmes.

This project model exposes HFCL to contract timing, customer offtake and execution conditions. Revenue is tied to delivering a network system, so the business behaves differently from selling a standard product that can be shipped to many customers.

Defence electronics

HFCL also reports Defence Product & Services. Examples in its stated portfolio include thermal weapon sights, electronic fuzes, high-capacity radio relay and surveillance radars. Defence work can therefore include both specialised equipment and related services. The product examples describe areas of activity, not a guarantee that each item contributed significant revenue during FY26.

How the revenue is recognised

For product sales, HFCL’s annual-report description says revenue is generally recognised when control of the goods passes to the customer, usually on delivery. A shipment of optical cable or networking equipment can therefore become reported revenue when the customer receives control, subject to the contract’s terms.

Turnkey work is different in substance: HFCL earns revenue by creating and delivering network systems and related infrastructure. The exact accounting pattern depends on the contract and applicable accounting requirements, so a project award or announcement should not automatically be treated as booked revenue. Reported revenue is the amount recognised in the financial statements for the period.

From capability to reported sales

HFCL can describe a broad catalogue of products while reporting revenue in only a few financial segments. A capability announcement indicates that the company can bid for or supply a category; it does not identify the value of orders, delivery timing or profitability for that category. To understand how money actually came in, start with the audited segment revenue and then check the segment result, rather than adding up every product name in a presentation.

FY2026 revenue by segment

The table below uses HFCL’s audited consolidated segment filing for the year ended March 31, 2026. Amounts are in ₹ crore. “Segment result before interest and unallocated items” is the segment measure shown in that filing; it is not the same as consolidated net profit.

Segment FY2026 revenue Segment result before interest and unallocated items
Telecom Products ₹2,931.01 crore ₹763.92 crore
Turnkey Contracts and Services ₹1,875.01 crore Loss of ₹113.01 crore
Defence Product & Services ₹76.70 crore Loss of ₹5.05 crore
Others ₹66.55 crore Loss of ₹2.04 crore
Revenue from operations ₹4,949.27 crore

Telecom Products supplied approximately 59% of consolidated revenue from operations, calculated from the reported segment and total figures. It was the largest revenue stream, but revenue share alone does not establish which activity generates the most cash, has the best long-term growth prospects or carries the least risk.

What the segment figures say

Product sales were larger than turnkey work by FY2026 revenue. The reported segment-result line also shows a sharp difference in the filing’s profitability measure: Telecom Products had a positive result, while Turnkey Contracts and Services, Defence Product & Services and Others were negative. Those figures should be read as operating results allocated to segments before interest and unallocated items, not as standalone net profits after every corporate cost, tax and financing item.

The scale of turnkey revenue is still important. With ₹1,875.01 crore reported for the year, HFCL remains a network-delivery company as well as a manufacturer. A description such as “HFCL makes fiber” misses the engineering and infrastructure side of the business.

The segment mix also helps explain why a headline revenue increase should be examined rather than celebrated automatically. Product revenue and project revenue can have different delivery schedules, margins and working-capital needs. A larger product share may reflect shipments in a particular period, while a project result can be affected by execution costs or delayed customer offtake.

What changed from FY2025

HFCL’s audited FY2025 results provide a weaker comparison point. Consolidated revenue was ₹4,064.52 crore, EBITDA was ₹506.75 crore, EBITDA margin was 12.47%, and profit after tax was ₹173.26 crore. Compared with FY2024, revenue fell 8.97%, EBITDA fell 25.71% and profit after tax fell 48.67%.

FY2025 consolidated measure Reported value
Revenue ₹4,064.52 crore
EBITDA ₹506.75 crore
EBITDA margin 12.47%
Profit after tax ₹173.26 crore
Change versus FY2024 revenue Down 8.97%
Change versus FY2024 EBITDA Down 25.71%
Change versus FY2024 profit after tax Down 48.67%

Management attributed the FY2025 pressure to muted optical-fiber-cable demand, margin pressure from newly launched telecom products and slower customer offtake in its EPC business. Mahendra Nahata, HFCL’s managing director, said: “While our financial performance was impacted by the downturn in the optical fiber cable demand, margin pressure from newly launched telecom products and slower customer offtake in our EPC business, we remained focused on strengthening the foundations for long-term growth.”

HFCL’s later audited FY2026 filing reports ₹4,949.27 crore of revenue from operations. That is ₹884.75 crore higher than the FY2025 revenue figure, or roughly 21.8% on a simple calculation. A single year-over-year increase does not by itself prove a durable trend. The periods and definitions must also be kept straight: FY2025 figures above are consolidated annual results, while the FY2026 segment table shows the year ended March 31, 2026 under the newer segment presentation.

Why HFCL is moving toward products

HFCL’s FY2026 investor presentation describes an intentional move toward product-led revenue and away from lower-profit turnkey work. This is management strategy and framing, not an audited target or a guarantee of future mix. The audited filing remains the source for what was actually recognised as revenue.

A product-led mix can offer repeatable manufacturing scale and wider customer distribution when demand is healthy. Turnkey projects can produce large contracts but may involve more execution, working-capital and timing exposure. HFCL’s own FY2025 explanation illustrates the pressure points: cable demand softened, recently launched products faced margin pressure and EPC customers took up work more slowly.

How to interpret HFCL’s business model

It is a hybrid, not a single-product story

Calling HFCL an optical-fiber company captures its largest FY2026 segment only partly. The company also sells active telecom equipment, integrates networks and reports defence products and services. Conversely, calling it an EPC contractor overlooks the scale of its product sales and its stated technology portfolio.

Revenue is not the same as cash generation

Revenue records the accounting value recognised in a period. Cash collection can occur on a different schedule, particularly for large infrastructure contracts. The FY2026 segment-result figures provide a profitability signal within the filing, but they do not show working-capital movements, financing costs, taxes or consolidated cash flow by segment.

Capabilities are broader than current contribution

HFCL lists 5G, Wi-Fi, radios, routing, optical products and defence electronics among its capabilities. Those categories indicate what the company can offer; they should not be used to assign a revenue amount to an individual product without a separate disclosure.

Older segment labels may not be directly comparable

The FY2026 filing separates Defence Product & Services. Older annual-report descriptions may group defence activity differently. When comparing periods, use the current filing’s labels and check whether the underlying classification changed before drawing conclusions about growth in a particular segment.

Questions to ask when reading future HFCL results

  • Has Telecom Products grown because of higher volume, pricing, a new product or a change in customer mix?
  • Is turnkey revenue accompanied by a positive segment result, or is growth requiring costly execution?
  • Are optical-fiber-cable demand and customer offtake improving, or is reported growth concentrated in a short-lived shipment cycle?
  • Are management projections being confused with audited, recognised revenue?
  • Does the segment structure remain comparable with prior years, especially for defence activities that older reports may have grouped differently?

These checks help separate HFCL’s operating model from the headline revenue number. The most defensible description is that HFCL earns money by supplying communications products and by delivering communications infrastructure, with defence products and services as a smaller reported segment in FY2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HFCL manufacture telecom equipment or only build networks?

It does both. Telecom Products revenue comes from optical fiber, optical-fiber cable and telecom equipment, including stated 5G, Wi-Fi, radio, switch and router capabilities. Turnkey Contracts and Services covers the design, supply and delivery of complete communications networks and related infrastructure.

What was HFCL’s biggest revenue segment in FY2026?

Telecom Products was largest at ₹2,931.01 crore, about 59% of consolidated revenue from operations of ₹4,949.27 crore. Turnkey Contracts and Services followed at ₹1,875.01 crore.

How much revenue came from defence?

The separately reported Defence Product & Services segment generated ₹76.70 crore in FY2026. Its segment result before interest and unallocated items was a loss of ₹5.05 crore, so the figure should not be confused with consolidated net profit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a new HFCL project announcement count as revenue immediately?

No. An award or announcement is not automatically booked revenue. Product revenue is generally recognised when control passes, usually on delivery, while turnkey recognition depends on the contract and applicable accounting requirements.

Is HFCL’s FY2026 growth proof that its business is permanently improving?

Not by itself. FY2026 revenue from operations was ₹4,949.27 crore versus FY2025 consolidated revenue of ₹4,064.52 crore, but one annual increase does not establish a durable trend. Demand, product margins, customer offtake and project execution still need to be monitored.

Does HFCL sell ordinary consumer fiber cables online?

The disclosed cable business is oriented toward telecom and infrastructure customers. “Fiber optic cable” is a broad category description; a consumer patch cable is not necessarily comparable to HFCL’s enterprise-grade supply, and no consumer marketplace channel should be assumed.

The Bottom Line

HFCL makes money in two principal ways: selling optical-fiber and other telecom products, and delivering turnkey communications networks. In audited FY2026 results, Telecom Products led with ₹2,931.01 crore of revenue, while Turnkey Contracts and Services contributed ₹1,875.01 crore. Defence products and services were a smaller reported line at ₹76.70 crore. The company is therefore best understood as a hybrid telecom-products manufacturer and network-infrastructure integrator, not as a single-product cable maker or a pure EPC contractor.
