“Free to claim” means you can add a PC game to a storefront account for $0 during a stated promotion window. The important question is what entitlement the store grants after that window closes. A “Free to Keep” giveaway normally creates a lasting, account-linked license; a Free Weekend or trial normally grants only temporary play; and a free-to-play listing is a separate category rather than a one-time giveaway.
Read the official offer label, deadline, platform and region rules before assuming you will retain access. Claiming is an account action, not the purchase of a physical copy or transfer of the game’s copyright.
What the phrase means at a glance
When a store marks a game “free to claim,” its price is reduced to zero for a limited period and the store lets eligible users add an entitlement to an account. You usually must complete the store’s claim or add-to-library action before the displayed deadline. Downloading the game is often optional and can happen later.

The offer’s formal type does. Look for wording such as Free to Keep, Free Weekend, trial, free-to-play, or a dated $0 promotion. Treat the specific storefront page as authoritative because promotions, regions and deadlines change.

Four labels that are easy to confuse
Free to Keep
A Free to Keep promotion is a time-limited opportunity to acquire a game license for no charge and retain that license on the claiming account. Steamworks defines this type as a promotion that lets a player permanently acquire a license for a game for free. Its documentation also says the promotional free package is removed from the store page after the period ends and that Steam Free to Keep promotions must run for at least 24 hours. The minimum is a Steam platform rule, not a promise that every other store uses the same duration. See the Steamworks Free to Keep and Free Weekend documentation.
“Permanently” here describes the account entitlement under the promotion. It does not turn a digital license into a transferable property right, and it does not guarantee access if the account is closed or the license is revoked under the applicable terms.
Free Weekend or trial
A Free Weekend, trial or other temporary-access event lets you play only during the specified period. The store may remove the ability to launch the game when the event ends unless you purchase it or receive another entitlement. Do not describe this as a permanent claim merely because the checkout price shows $0.

Free-to-play listing
Free-to-play is a normal pricing and business model, not necessarily a rotating giveaway. The game can generally be downloaded without paying an upfront price, while optional content, progression systems or other conditions are handled separately by the publisher. Epic’s Free Games page presents its promotional giveaways separately from a “Top Free to Play” catalog, illustrating that the two labels are not interchangeable.
A paid game temporarily priced at $0
Some stores display a normally paid game at $0 with a claim button and an end date. That may function as a keep-to-account giveaway, but the price alone is not proof. Check the text around the button, the license language and any “play until” or trial wording. If the page does not state that the entitlement is retained, avoid promising permanent access.

- Open the official offer page. Navigate from the storefront’s own site or launcher to the specific game, rather than relying only on a social-media post, search snippet or third-party list.
- Identify the offer type. Record whether the page says Free to Keep, giveaway, Free Weekend, trial or free-to-play. If those words are absent, read the full promotion description.
- Check the deadline and time zone. Note the exact date and time shown by the store. A countdown can be localized to your browser, while a written time may use the store’s standard time zone.
- Confirm platform and region eligibility. A PC offer may be limited to a particular operating system, country, storefront currency or age category. A console entitlement does not automatically create a PC license.
- Sign in to the intended account. Verify the account name or email before selecting the claim button. Entitlements normally stay with the account that completes the transaction.
- Complete the zero-price checkout or “Add to library” action. Some stores show a checkout receipt even though the total is $0. Wait for the confirmation that the license or game was added.
- Verify the library entry. Look for the title in the account’s library, purchase history or transaction list. Save the receipt or confirmation email if the store provides one.
- Install when convenient. Downloading is a separate step unless the offer explicitly says access lasts only while the event is active. You can usually install later from the same account, subject to the store’s service and license terms.
What you receive: a license linked to an account
“Claim” describes an account entitlement. It does not mean you receive a disc, a transferable code, the game’s copyright or unrestricted ownership of every associated asset.

Those Epic account terms also say an account cannot be sold, given away, traded or shared, and that sharing can lead to suspension or loss of access to licensed products. This is an Epic-specific rule, but it illustrates why a claimed title should be treated as tied to the original account rather than as a giftable asset.

Deadlines, regions and eligibility details
A claim window and the duration of play access are separate questions. The window controls when you may add the entitlement; the offer type controls whether you can continue playing afterward. Steamworks’ stated 24-hour minimum for its Free to Keep promotions is designed to give users across time zones a reasonable opportunity, but each live promotion still has its own closing time.
Do not assume that a giveaway shown in one country is identical elsewhere. Stores can vary the title, start time, currency, age requirement or legal terms by region. A page may also distinguish PC, Mac, Linux, cloud or console versions. If the claim button is missing, check whether you are signed in, whether the promotion is available in your country and whether your account meets an age or eligibility requirement.
Epic’s live Free Games page says it gives away a free game each week and advertises a new free game each Thursday on mobile and PC. That is the page’s described cadence, not a guarantee that every title, time or regional deadline is identical. Confirm the current listing and countdown at store.epicgames.com/free-games before relying on it.

What happens after you claim
You have not installed it yet
For a keep-to-account offer, installation is normally optional. The library record or receipt is the evidence that the account completed the claim. When you later install, use the same launcher and account; signing into a different account can make a legitimately claimed title appear unavailable.
You uninstall or replace the computer
Uninstalling removes local files, not necessarily the account entitlement. Reinstall through the same storefront account, provided the game and service remain supported and the license has not been revoked under the applicable terms.
The giveaway page disappears
That is expected for many time-limited promotions. Steamworks says the free package for a Steam Free to Keep promotion is removed from the store page after the event. A disappearance from the promotional page is not, by itself, proof that a previously completed claim was lost; check the account library and transaction history.

You claimed a temporary event
If the label was Free Weekend or trial, the launcher may leave the game installed while blocking launch after the end time. Keeping the files on disk does not extend the permission to play.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Confusing “free to claim” with “free to play.” Read the offer heading and the store’s free-to-play category separately. A rotating giveaway has a closing deadline; a free-to-play listing is a different model.
- Waiting until the last minute. Complete the claim before the displayed deadline, allowing for sign-in, payment verification and launcher outages. A download that starts before the deadline is not a substitute for a completed claim.
- Assuming an installation is a claim. Look for the receipt, library entry or confirmation message. If none appears, repeat the checkout while the offer is still live.
- Using the wrong account. Sign out and back in to the account that should retain the entitlement, then check its library and purchase history.
- Ignoring region or platform limits. If the button is unavailable, read the eligibility notice instead of using a VPN or an unofficial key. Circumventing regional controls can conflict with store terms and can leave you without support.
- Promising ownership forever. Say “account-linked license” or “retained entitlement under the offer terms.” Licenses can be limited, non-transferable or revocable, as the Epic terms example demonstrates.
- Sharing credentials to share the game. Keep the entitlement on the original account and follow the storefront’s account rules. Epic’s terms specifically prohibit selling, giving, trading or sharing accounts.
A practical checklist before you tell someone a game is free
- Copy the exact offer label from the official storefront page.
- Record the closing date, time and displayed time zone.
- State whether access is permanent account entitlement or temporary play.
- Name the required storefront account, platform and region.
- Explain that claiming and downloading are separate actions.
- Use “licensed” rather than “owned” unless the applicable terms clearly support a stronger description.
- Link to the live official offer page so readers can verify changes.
Following this checklist prevents the most damaging error: telling a reader that a temporary trial or a free-to-play listing is a permanent giveaway. The $0 price is only the starting fact; the offer type and its terms determine what the player actually receives.
