First gold pour means a mine’s processing system has recovered its first gold and produced it in a bullion form, commonly doré. It is proof that ore has moved through enough of the plant to recover metal, but it is not a universal synonym for commercial production, steady operations, or full nameplate capacity. The operator’s definition and the project’s commissioning stage determine what the milestone actually says.
What a first gold pour actually is
A gold mine is not producing saleable metal merely because its shafts, open pit, crushers, tanks, leach pads, or buildings are complete. Ore must be fed into the processing route, gold must be recovered from the resulting solution or concentrate, and the recovered metal must be collected in a physical bullion product. The first time that happens is the first gold pour.
The pour is therefore a processing milestone, not simply a construction milestone. It demonstrates that at least part of the recovery circuit is functioning well enough to produce gold. Depending on the flowsheet, the output may be a doré bar or another intermediate bullion product. Doré contains gold along with other metals and normally goes to a refinery; a first pour should not automatically be described as gold of final saleable purity.

That is a specific route, not a requirement that every mine use the same equipment. A gravity circuit, flotation circuit, pressure-oxidation plant, BIOX circuit, heap-leach operation or another flowsheet can reach its first pour through a different sequence.

The narrow question answered by the milestone is: Has this processing route produced its first recovered gold? It does not, by itself, answer whether the mine has reached planned throughput, achieved its design recovery rate, passed performance testing, or reached stable commercial operations.
Where first pour fits in the mine-development sequence
Projects normally pass through several overlapping stages. The labels vary by operator, but the operational logic is broadly consistent.
Construction completion and pre-commissioning
Construction teams finish equipment installation, piping, electrical work, controls, utilities and safety systems. Pre-commissioning checks individual components without necessarily running the complete process with ore. A plant can be mechanically complete while still unable to recover gold.

Commissioning
Commissioning starts equipment and systems in an integrated operating environment. “Wet commissioning” generally means introducing water or process liquids to test pumps, tanks, piping, instrumentation and control loops. “Hot commissioning” or ore commissioning goes further by introducing ore and operating the process under production conditions. The exact terms are company-specific, so the announcement should be read for what material actually entered the plant.
First recovered gold
Once ore or mineralized feed has passed through the recovery circuit and metal has been collected, the operator can announce a first pour. A project may report more than one first pour when it has separate circuits. Sabodala-Massawa, for instance, reported first pours from its gravity and BIOX circuits rather than treating the expansion as one undifferentiated event.

Continued commissioning and ramp-up
After the first bar, operators tune operating conditions, train crews, resolve bottlenecks, increase feed rates and build a reliable operating history. Early output is often deliberately small. The plant may be processing only selected ore, operating one circuit, or running below its design rate while instrumentation and recovery settings are optimized.
Commercial production and nameplate performance
Commercial production is a company-defined declaration. It may require a minimum percentage of design throughput for a specified period, successful performance testing, or management’s judgment that the operation is ready for routine production. Nameplate capacity is the designed steady-state throughput or production capability, not the amount represented by the first bar. Some companies declare commercial production later; others explicitly use the first pour as the production start.
Why first pour does not always mean commercial production
Operators do not use the phrase consistently. IAMGOLD reported a first pour at Côté Gold in March 2024, while its current operations page records commercial production in August 2024. In that case, the first pour preceded the commercial declaration by several months.
G Mining Ventures announced Tocantinzinho’s first pour on July 9, 2024, after hot commissioning began on June 11, while the announcement still expected commercial production in the second half of 2024. That forecast was the company’s expectation at the time, not proof of the eventual declaration.
PT Merdeka Copper Gold uses different language for Pani. Its February 14, 2026 first pour announcement calls the event the start of commercial production for the initial heap-leach operation. The appropriate interpretation is therefore the operator’s stated one: at Pani, first pour and commercial start were presented as the same milestone; at Côté Gold, they were separate dates.

Endeavour’s Sabodala-Massawa expansion illustrates another distinction. First pours were achieved from two circuits while the company still described commercial production and stable nameplate throughput as subsequent milestones. A reader comparing announcements should not assume that a common phrase carries a common accounting or operating definition.

The physical path depends on the mine’s metallurgy and flowsheet. A simplified sequence is:
- Ore preparation: mined ore is crushed, screened, and, where required, ground to expose gold-bearing minerals.
- Extraction: gold is dissolved, separated by gravity, or liberated into a concentrate. Leach operations may produce a pregnant solution containing dissolved gold.
- Recovery: the plant removes gold from solution or concentrate. In an ADR circuit, activated carbon adsorbs gold from solution, then desorption strips it from the carbon for final recovery.
- Refining and smelting: recovered material is dried or melted and cast into a bullion product, often doré.
- Measurement and reporting: the operator weighs and assays the initial product and reports the amount, usually in troy ounces, together with the circuit and commissioning context.
Not every project performs all of these steps on site, and a first pour announcement may report recovered ounces before final refinery settlement. The announcement should therefore be read for whether the number is an initial poured amount, an assay-adjusted figure, or a later accounting quantity.
Examples of first-pour announcements
The following projects show why the milestone must be interpreted in context. The ounce figures are the initial outputs reported by each operator, not production targets or an industry standard.

How to interpret the number of ounces
Initial ounces are evidence that metal was recovered, but they are not a useful stand-in for annual production. The figures above were produced during commissioning, when feed rates, operating hours and circuit availability were still changing. A 440-ounce first pour at Tocantinzinho and a 980-ounce first pour at Houndé cannot be ranked as larger or better projects simply by comparing those numbers.
The same project can also report separate quantities from separate circuits. At Sabodala-Massawa, the approximately 112 ounces from gravity and approximately 612 ounces from BIOX describe different parts of the expansion. Adding such figures can obscure which circuit was operating and when, especially if the pours occurred on different dates.
No industry-wide “typical” first-pour output has been established. Treat each reported amount as a project-specific commissioning result, and check whether the company gives the feed tonnage, circuit, assay basis, and time period associated with it.
What a first-pour announcement proves—and what it leaves open
What it proves
- At least one recovery path has processed material and produced measurable gold.
- The project has advanced beyond construction-only status into operating commissioning.
- The named circuit, plant or expansion has reached a visible physical production milestone.
- The operator has enough recovered material to weigh, assay and report a bullion output, where an amount is disclosed.
What it does not prove by itself
- That every circuit in the mine or expansion is complete and operating.
- That the plant has sustained its design throughput or recovery rate.
- That performance tests have passed or that bottlenecks have been removed.
- That commercial production has begun, unless the operator explicitly defines the event that way.
- That future production forecasts have been achieved.
- That the first bullion is final refinery-grade gold or immediately saleable in the same form.
A practical checklist for comparing two first-pour releases
When reading announcements from different mines, use the following questions in order:

- Which project is being described? Identify whether it is a new mine, an expansion, a replacement plant, or one circuit inside a larger complex.
- Which circuit produced the metal? Gravity, BIOX, heap leach, flotation and other circuits may have different commissioning schedules and capacities.
- What happened before the pour? Look for wet or hot commissioning, the date ore was introduced, and the tonnage processed. Sabodala-Massawa reported roughly 50,000 tonnes before its first pours; Tocantinzinho identified the start of hot commissioning.
- How much was produced and how is it qualified? Record the ounces, date, circuit and whether the figure is approximate. Do not treat it as annualized output.
- What definition does the operator use? Check whether the release says first pour, commercial production, or both, and whether a separate declaration is scheduled.
- What remains for ramp-up? Find stated throughput, recovery, performance-testing, workforce, permitting or stability milestones. Sabodala-Massawa’s 1.2-million-tonne-per-year stable nameplate expectation was a later target, not a consequence of the first bars.
- Which statements are achieved facts and which are forecasts? A later operations page or subsequent filing may establish whether an earlier expected date actually occurred.
Why operators highlight the milestone
First pour is easy for investors, local communities and employees to understand because it converts a long construction program into a physical product. It can demonstrate that the recovery route works in an integrated plant, provide an early check on commissioning readiness, and mark the transition from building an asset to operating it.

That communication value does not remove the technical uncertainty that remains. Early production can expose issues with ore handling, reagent consumption, carbon loading, oxygen supply, thickening, filtration, smelting, instrumentation or water balance. A project can therefore celebrate a successful first bar while still having substantial engineering and operating work ahead.
G Mining Ventures President and CEO Louis-Pierre Gignac described Tocantinzinho’s event as “the significant milestone of the first gold pour, less than two years after the formal construction decision.” PT Merdeka Gold Resources President Director Boyke Poerbaya Abidin said Pani’s pour “marks a key milestone in EMAS’ successful transition from project development to commercial gold operations.” These statements show the importance companies attach to the event, while also showing why the operator’s own wording must be preserved: one statement treats the pour as a project milestone, the other explicitly treats it as the commercial start.
Questions to ask after the first bar is poured
A serious assessment should move beyond the headline and seek the next operating disclosures:

- Has management formally declared commercial production, and what criteria did it apply?
- What throughput and recovery rates were achieved over a sustained period rather than during a single pour?
- Are all planned circuits running, or did the first metal come from only one part of the plant?
- What ramp-up schedule, nameplate capacity and production guidance has the operator published?
- Were the reported ounces approximate commissioning output or a later refined and settled quantity?
- Have subsequent reports confirmed, delayed or changed the forecasts stated in the first-pour release?
Those answers determine whether a project has merely demonstrated recoverable gold or has become a stable operating mine.
Bottom line
First gold pour is the first physical bullion produced after a mine’s processing system recovers gold from ore or solution. It is an important proof-of-operation milestone, but its meaning stops there unless the operator explicitly links it to commercial production. To understand the project’s real status, read the pour announcement alongside commissioning results, circuit-by-circuit output, the commercial-production declaration, and evidence of sustained throughput and recovery.
