Phones use multiple rear cameras to capture different views and support specialized shots. A common four-camera setup combines a main camera, an ultra-wide camera, a macro camera and a depth camera—but four lenses do not automatically mean better photos. The useful question is what each camera on a particular phone can do.
What are the four cameras on a phone for?
A representative example is Samsung’s Galaxy A23, whose rear “Quad Camera” system pairs four modules with different roles: a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 5 MP ultra-wide camera, a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth camera. Samsung documents these specifications for the Galaxy A23; they are an example, not a standard layout used by every phone. Samsung’s Galaxy A-series camera guide describes the arrangement.
Main camera
The main camera is the everyday option for general photos. Resolution is one specification to check, but it does not by itself establish image quality. Stabilization and sample photos from the exact phone also matter; Samsung lists OIS on the Galaxy A23’s 50 MP main camera.
Ultra-wide camera
An ultra-wide camera fits more of a scene into the frame. It can help when you cannot move farther back or want to include more of a landscape, room or group. Its usefulness depends on the actual field of view and the quality of the resulting image, including toward the edges.

Macro camera
A macro camera is intended for close-up photographs of small or nearby subjects. Whether it produces useful results depends on the implementation on that specific phone; the presence of a module alone does not tell you how good its close-ups will be.
Depth camera
A depth camera supplies depth information that can support focus adjustments or depth effects. Check which functions the phone actually offers rather than assuming that the module adds a feature you will use.

Does every camera feature come from a separate camera?
No. Camera count and camera features do not map one-to-one. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications, for example, describe optical-quality 2x telephoto framing enabled by the main camera, while its separate ultra-wide camera supports macro photography. Apple lists 48 MP main and ultra-wide cameras and a 120° field of view for the iPhone 17’s ultra-wide camera. These are specifications for that model, not evidence that every phone with fewer cameras offers the same functions. Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications explain its camera system.

Apple’s developer documentation says its built-in triple-camera system combines fixed-focal-length ultra-wide, wide and telephoto cameras, and can switch automatically between cameras when zoom factor, lighting and focus position allow. The system can also deliver photos from constituent cameras in one capture request. Apple’s triple-camera documentation describes these capabilities.

Apple also documents image fusion between wide and telephoto cameras for higher-quality zoom, and depth information derived from disparities between camera images. That illustrates how software and multiple sensors can work together; it does not mean every phone implements those functions in the same way. Apple’s dual-camera documentation covers those system capabilities.
How should you compare phones with multiple cameras?
Compare what each camera actually does and how it performs, not the number of circles on the back of the phone. For a useful comparison, check these points:

- Main-camera performance: Look beyond megapixels to stabilization and image samples from the exact model.
- Zoom implementation: Find out whether the phone has a dedicated telephoto camera or offers a particular zoom framing through another sensor and processing. “Optical-quality” framing is not necessarily the same thing as a separate telephoto module.
- Ultra-wide results: Check the field of view and inspect sample images, especially near the frame edges.
- Macro and depth functions: Confirm that the phone has the close-up or depth-related mode you want, and that it works in a way you find useful.
- Independent image evidence: Look for samples or tests of the exact model and variant. Specifications describe hardware and features; they do not establish comparative image quality.
Does having four cameras mean a phone takes better pictures?
Not on its own. More cameras can give a phone more viewpoints or specialized capture options, but the count does not show how well any camera performs. Compare the roles, stabilization, zoom approach and image evidence for the specific phone you are considering.
