Dolby TrueHD is a lossless audio codec used in Blu-ray contexts. It compresses digital audio originally represented as linear PCM so that decoding can reproduce the encoded PCM content without the information loss associated with lossy codecs. Whether your system can play a disc’s TrueHD track depends on the disc, player, receiver and connection.
What does “lossless” mean for Dolby TrueHD?
Dolby describes TrueHD as “100 percent lossless” and says the decoded audio is bit-for-bit identical to the master recording. More precisely, lossless describes the codec’s encoding and decoding of the audio data; it does not guarantee that every later step in playback preserves the signal unchanged. Downmixing, dialogue or dynamic-range processing, and other equipment behavior can affect what reaches the speakers.
Dolby defines TrueHD as a lossless coding system for digital audio originally represented as linear PCM. It is distinct from Dolby Digital Plus, which Dolby classifies as lossy. TrueHD is not simply a higher-bitrate setting of Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby identifies them as separate codecs with different coding approaches.

What audio formats and capabilities does TrueHD support?
Dolby’s Blu-ray specifications describe these supported capabilities. They are format limits, not a description of every soundtrack encoded in TrueHD.
| Capability | Dolby’s stated specification |
|---|---|
| Full-range channels at 96 kHz/24-bit | Up to eight |
| Full-range channels at 192 kHz/24-bit | Six |
| Sampling-frequency range | 44.1–192 kHz |
| Word length | Up to 24 bits |
| Maximum bit rate on Blu-ray Disc | 18 Mbps; this is a ceiling, not a rate guaranteed for every soundtrack |
A TrueHD stream can also contain up to three separate mixes: 7.1-channel, 5.1-channel and two-channel stereo. Dolby describes support for dialogue normalization, dynamic-range control and downmix options. These are format and metadata capabilities; the specific mixes and options available to a viewer depend on how the title was authored.

How is Dolby TrueHD different from Dolby Digital Plus?
| Question | Dolby TrueHD | Dolby Digital Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Coding type | Lossless | Lossy |
| What that means | Decoding can reproduce the encoded PCM audio content without codec-related information loss. | Lossy coding does not preserve all of the original audio information. |
| Relationship between formats | A separate lossless codec used in Blu-ray contexts. | A separate lossy codec, not simply another name for TrueHD at a lower bitrate. |
The codec label alone does not establish which track will sound better in a particular setup. For a specific disc or system, check the available track, mix, playback support and signal path rather than inferring audible superiority from the format name.
