Behind-the-meter power means that a data center has generation, batteries, or other controllable energy resources on the facility side of its utility meter. Those resources can serve the data center directly while the site remains connected to the electric grid. The arrangement is not automatically off-grid, and it is not automatically a microgrid. A microgrid is a coordinated electrical system with defined boundaries and controls; if it is designed to island, it can disconnect from the utility and continue feeding selected loads during an outage.

This distinction matters because large data centers often need more power, faster energization, and higher resilience than a local distribution connection can provide on its own. Onsite resources may supplement a constrained interconnection, manage peaks, integrate renewables, or keep critical computing and cooling equipment operating during grid disturbances.

What “behind the meter” means in a data center

The utility meter marks the commercial and electrical boundary between the distribution system and the customer. In a behind-the-meter arrangement, the data center owns or manages energy assets on the customer side of that meter. The assets remain connected to the distribution network and normally operate in parallel with it. They can reduce the amount of electricity drawn from the utility, and, where interconnection rules allow, they can export energy back to the grid.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes behind-the-meter assets as customer-owned resources that remain connected to the distribution system. Examples include solar photovoltaic arrays and battery storage. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) similarly describes a behind-the-meter system as one that is connected behind the utility meter and directly connected to the customer’s load. It may combine several generation technologies, storage, and supervisory controls to manage utility draw.

For a data center, the “load” includes more than servers. Cooling plants, pumps, fans, power-conversion equipment, lighting, security systems, and network infrastructure all consume electricity. A facility may use behind-the-meter resources to support the entire site or to prioritize only selected loads when available power is limited.

Behind-the-meter power is not the same as a microgrid

A battery, solar array, engine generator, or hybrid plant can be behind the meter without being a microgrid. The defining question is whether the resources are coordinated as one controllable electrical system and whether they can separate from the utility when necessary.

Characteristic Behind-the-meter installation Microgrid
Location Resources sit on the customer side of the utility meter and serve the facility load directly. Resources and loads operate inside clearly defined electrical boundaries, normally behind the meter for a facility-level system.
Possible resources A single battery, solar array, generator, or a hybrid combination. Multiple resources, loads, switchgear, protection, power electronics, and supervisory controls coordinated as one system.
Normal grid connection Usually remains connected to the utility and can reduce utility draw. Normally connected to the utility but controlled as a unified system.
Islanding Not implied. A basic behind-the-meter asset may shut down when the grid fails. An islandable design can disconnect at the point of common coupling and continue serving designated loads.
Primary distinction Describes the meter-side location and ownership relationship. Describes coordinated operation, electrical boundaries, and control capability.

DOE’s definition captures the control concept: “A microgrid system represents a group of interconnected loads and local energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid.” A data center can therefore have behind-the-meter equipment without having a microgrid, or it can place an islandable microgrid behind the meter.

Why data centers use behind-the-meter power

Supplementing a constrained utility connection

Obtaining a larger distribution or transmission connection can require line, substation, transformer, and protection upgrades. Those projects may take longer than the data center’s construction schedule. Local generation or storage can supply part of the demand while the existing connection supplies the rest.

DOE illustrates the idea with a 5 MW data center whose grid connection can carry 4 MW. A local microgrid supplies the additional 1 MW, allowing the facility to reach its intended load without waiting for the grid connection to be expanded. This is an illustrative operating scenario, not a universal sizing rule or a market statistic.

Keeping critical services running during disturbances

An islandable microgrid can open its connection to the utility when voltage, frequency, or upstream service becomes unacceptable. Controls then balance local generation, batteries, and facility loads. The system may serve the whole campus or shed noncritical loads so that computing, cooling, fire protection, controls, and network operations remain within the available power budget.

Managing peaks and power quality

Batteries and controllable generators can discharge or ramp when the site approaches a demand peak. That can reduce exposure to demand charges or capacity-related tariff components where local rate rules make those charges significant. Inverter-based resources and controls may also help manage voltage and frequency at the facility connection, although the exact services depend on interconnection permission and utility requirements.

Adding onsite renewable energy

Solar PV can offset daytime utility purchases, while batteries shift some of that energy to later hours or provide fast response. Because data centers typically operate continuously, renewable output alone is rarely sufficient to carry the full load. A hybrid design can combine PV, storage, dispatchable engines or turbines, and the utility connection.

Providing services to the wider grid

When tariffs and interconnection agreements permit, a data center’s battery or generator may reduce consumption, export power, or provide ancillary support. Export limits, telemetry, protection settings, operating windows, and market rules vary by jurisdiction, so grid-service capability must be confirmed during project development rather than assumed.

How a behind-the-meter data-center system operates

Normal grid-connected operation

The utility supplies power through the point of common coupling and meter. A site controller measures load, generation, battery state of charge, voltage, and frequency. It dispatches resources according to the operating objective: minimize peak draw, follow a renewable-output schedule, maintain a reserve for outages, or meet a utility program’s response signal.

Power converters and switchgear keep each source within its electrical limits. Protection equipment detects faults and prevents unsafe backfeed. The data center’s electrical distribution system still requires its normal redundancy, uninterruptible power supplies, and backup procedures; behind-the-meter resources supplement that architecture rather than eliminating it.

Transition to islanded operation

Islanding requires more than installing a generator or battery. A typical design needs a utility-approved interconnection, a controllable breaker at the point of common coupling, protection relays, synchronization capability, black-start or grid-forming equipment where required, and controls that balance supply and load. During a disturbance, the system must detect the event, separate safely, establish a stable voltage and frequency reference, and sequence loads and resources.

Some systems continue serving all loads; others use predefined load-shedding tiers. For example, cooling and computing halls may receive priority while office areas or flexible process loads are curtailed. When utility service returns, the controller synchronizes the island with the grid before reclosing the connection.

Equipment that may be included

  • Battery energy-storage systems: provide fast response, peak shaving, renewable shifting, and short-duration ride-through. Their usable duration, thermal management, degradation, and fire-safety design affect the project.
  • Solar photovoltaic arrays: produce electricity onsite when solar resource is available. Output varies by weather and time of day, so storage or dispatchable supply is normally needed for continuous data-center operation.
  • Diesel or gas engines and turbines: provide dispatchable generation and can support longer outages. Fuel logistics, emissions limits, testing schedules, and maintenance requirements are central design constraints.
  • Fuel cells: can provide steady onsite generation where fuel supply, siting, and permitting support them.
  • Combined heat and power or hybrid generation: may use otherwise wasted thermal energy or combine several generation technologies, subject to a suitable heat demand and local rules.
  • Power electronics and inverters: convert, regulate, and synchronize electricity from batteries, PV, and other sources.
  • Switchgear and protection: isolate faults, control the point of common coupling, and prevent unsafe energization of utility circuits.
  • Supervisory microgrid controls: forecast load and renewable output, dispatch assets, maintain reserves, execute islanding, and coordinate reconnection.

DOE and the Congressional Research Service emphasize that the appropriate mix is site-specific. Utility rules, tariffs, fuel availability, emissions requirements, reliability targets, available space, and project economics can all change the answer.

Comparing design choices for a data center

Design choice Strengths Important constraints
Battery-focused system Fast response, peak management, renewable shifting, and no onsite combustion during discharge. Energy duration is finite; batteries require thermal management, safety systems, replacement planning, and charging energy.
Dispatchable engine or turbine generation Can support sustained operation when fuel is available and can supplement a constrained grid connection. Fuel storage or pipelines, emissions permits, noise controls, maintenance, testing, and fuel-price exposure.
Solar plus storage Uses onsite renewable generation and can reduce daytime utility purchases while storage shifts energy. Solar output is weather- and time-dependent; land, roof area, interconnection limits, and storage size constrain contribution.
Islandable hybrid microgrid Combines resources, coordinates loads, and can disconnect from the utility to serve priority loads. Highest control, protection, commissioning, permitting, and integration complexity among these configurations.

Can a data center generate its own electricity?

Yes. A data center can generate electricity onsite with engines, turbines, fuel cells, solar PV, or combinations of those technologies. “Behind the meter” describes where that generation is connected, not whether the facility produces all of its own power. Most sites remain interconnected because the utility provides supplemental energy, balancing, and a path to export under approved conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A facility is off-grid only when it has no operational dependence on the utility connection. That is a much more demanding design problem: generation and storage must cover the full load, reserve margins, maintenance outages, fuel interruptions, seasonal renewable variation, and black-start requirements. A behind-the-meter system can instead be grid-connected, islandable only during emergencies, or unable to island at all.

Why the issue is especially important for AI data centers

Artificial-intelligence workloads can add large, concentrated electrical demand because accelerated computing racks draw substantial power and require intensive cooling. When that demand arrives faster than local transmission or distribution upgrades, onsite resources can bridge part of the gap. The same equipment can provide resilience for high-value computing loads and help control abrupt changes in facility demand.

The engineering challenge is not simply installing more generation. AI campuses must coordinate electrical capacity, cooling, battery charging, fuel delivery, emissions limits, and expansion phases. A design that works for an initial hall may need additional transformers, switchgear, generation, storage, and control capacity as later halls come online. Utility studies and protection settings must be revisited when the load profile changes materially.

Planning a behind-the-meter project: a practical sequence

  1. Define the electrical objective. Decide whether the priority is faster energization, outage resilience, peak reduction, renewable integration, power quality, grid services, or a combination.
  2. Map the load. Separate computing, cooling, pumps, network systems, life-safety equipment, offices, and flexible loads. Establish normal, peak, startup, and emergency demand profiles.
  3. Confirm the utility boundary. Identify the meter, point of common coupling, available import capacity, export limits, protection requirements, tariff structure, and study obligations.
  4. Set resilience requirements. Specify which loads must operate during an outage, for how long, under what environmental conditions, and with what load-shedding priority.
  5. Choose resource combinations. Evaluate batteries, PV, engines, turbines, fuel cells, CHP, and hybrid arrangements against fuel access, emissions rules, space, noise, water, and maintenance needs.
  6. Design controls and protection. Define dispatch logic, reserve state of charge, islanding detection, breaker operation, synchronization, black start, communications, cybersecurity, and manual fallback procedures.
  7. Complete permits and interconnection studies. Obtain utility approval and address air-quality, fire, building, noise, environmental, and fuel-storage requirements before committing to the operating model.
  8. Commission under realistic scenarios. Test utility loss, partial-load operation, generator and battery transitions, renewable variability, load shedding, black start, and reconnection. Document recovery procedures and operator training.
  9. Plan for growth. Reserve space, cable routes, switchgear positions, cooling capacity, fuel logistics, and control-system capacity for later load additions.

Trade-offs, limits, and common misconceptions

  • It is not automatically cheaper. Capital equipment, controls, interconnection studies, permitting, fuel infrastructure, maintenance, and replacement costs can outweigh avoided tariff charges in some locations.
  • It is not automatically cleaner. Solar and batteries can reduce grid purchases, but combustion generation has emissions and fuel impacts. Local air-quality rules may limit runtime or require controls.
  • It is not automatically resilient. A generator that cannot start, a battery with insufficient state of charge, or a control failure will not sustain the facility. Resilience depends on tested integration and operating procedures.
  • It does not bypass the utility. Parallel operation, export, islanding, and reconnection require approved protection and operating arrangements. Unauthorized backfeed can endanger workers and damage equipment.
  • It does not remove complexity. Coordinating multiple sources, changing data-center loads, cooling systems, and utility signals demands specialized controls and trained operators.
  • It does not guarantee unlimited expansion. Onsite resources may cover a shortfall, but fuel, emissions, land, transformer, and control limits still constrain future capacity.

What to ask before approving a design

  • Which loads are critical, and what is the required island duration?
  • Can the existing utility connection carry the initial and planned future load?
  • Will the system import only, or is export and a grid-services program part of the business case?
  • What fuel is available during a regional emergency, and how long can onsite storage last?
  • Which emissions, noise, water, fire, and land-use permits apply?
  • How will batteries be protected, cooled, monitored, and replaced?
  • What happens when solar output falls, a generator is unavailable, or the battery reaches its reserve limit?
  • Who operates the controls, and how often are islanding and reconnection procedures tested?
  • Can switchgear, feeders, controls, and generation be expanded without interrupting live computing operations?

The practical meaning is straightforward: behind-the-meter power places energy resources on the data center’s side of the meter so they can directly support the facility. A microgrid is the coordinated, controllable form of that arrangement, and an islandable microgrid adds the ability to separate from the utility and keep priority loads running. Whether the investment makes sense depends on the site’s grid capacity, reliability target, tariffs, fuel and emissions constraints, permitting path, and expected load growth.
