Auto-Brightness automatically adjusts the screen brightness on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED in response to ambient light. It can be switched on or off in Quick Settings or System Settings. Nintendo Switch Lite does not include the feature.
What Auto-Brightness changes
When enabled, the Switch adjusts its screen brightness based on the surrounding light. It is an automatic screen adjustment, not a setting for changing a connected TV’s brightness. Nintendo makes the console’s screen-brightness controls available in handheld and tabletop modes. Nintendo’s support guide describes the feature and its supported modes.
Which Switch models support it?

Use Quick Settings
- Hold the HOME Button for at least one second to open Quick Settings.
- Select the Auto-Brightness control to enable or disable it. You can also move the brightness bar there for a manual adjustment. Nintendo’s Quick Settings instructions explain these controls.
Use System Settings
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Screen Brightness.
- Set Auto-Brightness to On or turn it off; use the brightness bar to set brightness manually.
Menu wording can vary slightly by support region or software version. For example, Nintendo’s Australia support page labels the setting “Auto-Brightness Adjustment” in the System Settings route. See Nintendo’s regional instructions.

Why the screen brightness changes by itself
If Auto-Brightness is on, the console’s sensor responds to ambient conditions and the screen brightness can change as those conditions change. Nintendo advises not to cover the sensor. Its position differs on the OLED model, so consult model-specific guidance rather than assuming the sensor is in the same place on every Switch. Nintendo Japan’s brightness guidance covers the sensor and notes that Switch Lite lacks automatic brightness.
- Check whether Auto-Brightness is enabled if the change is unexpected.
- Keep the sensor unobstructed.
- If you prefer a fixed level, turn Auto-Brightness off and adjust the brightness bar manually.
What the feature does not promise
Nintendo documents automatic adjustment based on ambient conditions, but its support guidance does not quantify battery savings, response time, or comfort improvements. It therefore should not be treated as a guarantee of longer battery life, reduced eye strain, or improved outdoor visibility.
