Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones, signal processing and speakers to generate an inverse sound wave that reduces incoming noise, particularly steady low-frequency sounds such as aircraft engines, train rumble and air-conditioning. Passive noise isolation uses only physical barriers—a sealed ear tip, closed ear cup and cushion—to attenuate sound. Most ANC headphones combine both approaches.
ANC reduces sound at your ears; it does not erase noise from the room, and it is not automatically hearing protection. The seal, fit and design of the headphones determine how well either method works.
What ANC means
ANC stands for active noise cancellation. A headset with ANC has microphones that monitor sound, electronic circuitry that analyzes the microphone signal, and speakers that play a carefully calculated anti-noise signal. The anti-noise has a waveform opposite to the unwanted sound. When the two waves meet near your ear, destructive interference reduces the resulting sound pressure.

Noise still exists in the cabin, office or street; the headset is reducing how much of it reaches your eardrum. This distinction explains why ANC performance changes with fit, position and the type of sound around you.

The hardware ANC needs
- Microphones: External microphones listen to the surrounding environment. Some designs also use internal microphones to measure the sound left inside the ear cup or ear canal and correct the result.
- Signal processing: A processor estimates the unwanted waveform and creates the anti-noise signal quickly enough to follow changes in the environment.
- Speakers: The drivers reproduce both your music and the anti-noise signal.
- Power: Batteries or another power source run the microphones and processing electronics. If the battery is empty, active functions may stop even though the physical ear tips or cushions can still provide some isolation.
How active noise cancellation works
- Sound reaches the microphones. An outside microphone samples engine hum, fan noise or other environmental sound. In an earbud with feedback control, an inside microphone also measures what remains close to your ear.
- The processor predicts the unwanted sound. Digital signal processing estimates the timing, frequency and level of the noise. Low, repetitive sounds are easier to predict than a sudden shout or a clattering dish.
- The speaker produces anti-noise. The headset plays a waveform designed to be opposite in phase to the measured noise. “Opposite phase” does not mean a simple inverted recording; the processor accounts for microphone position, speaker response and the acoustic path to your ear.
- Interference reduces sound pressure. Where the original noise and anti-noise overlap, parts of the waveform cancel. The result is less noise at your eardrum, although cancellation is never equally strong at every frequency or location.
- The system continually adjusts. Microphones keep sampling, so the electronics can respond as the aircraft changes speed, a train enters a tunnel or the earbud shifts slightly.
Because the microphones are always listening, you may hear a faint electronic hiss in a very quiet room. Wind can also strike an exposed microphone and create rumble or turbulence that the ANC system cannot distinguish cleanly from other low-frequency noise.
What passive noise isolation does
Passive isolation is acoustic blocking created by the headset’s physical construction. An in-ear model relies on an ear tip that seals the entrance to the ear canal. An over-ear model uses a closed shell and a cushion that surrounds the ear. The material, shape, clamp force and seal determine how much sound is attenuated before it reaches your ear.
Passive isolation needs no microphones, anti-noise processing or battery. It works whenever the physical seal is intact, including when the headset is switched off. Dense materials and a tight seal generally reduce higher-frequency sound—such as some speech consonants, keyboard clicks and braking squeals—more effectively than ANC alone.

A small leak can substantially reduce isolation. An ear tip that is too small, an ear cup displaced by hair or glasses, or a cushion that no longer contacts your head creates an acoustic path around the barrier. The same leak also makes ANC less effective because the anti-noise was calculated for a different acoustic load.
Comfort and isolation are linked but not identical. A very tight clamp may seal well but become painful during a long flight. A soft, comfortable cushion that leaves gaps may allow more sound through. The best design is the one that stays sealed without causing pressure points while you move.
ANC and passive isolation compared
| Characteristic | Active noise cancellation | Passive noise isolation |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Microphones and electronics generate anti-noise through the speakers. | Ear tips, ear cups, cushions and material block or attenuate sound physically. |
| Power requirement | Requires a battery or other power source for microphones and processing. | Works without power; isolation remains when electronics are off. |
| Best at | Steady, repetitive low-frequency noise such as engine, train and HVAC hum. | Higher-frequency sound and leakage control across the whole fit. |
| Less effective against | Voices, sudden impacts, clattering and rapidly changing sounds. | Low-frequency vibration that passes through the physical structure. |
| Common side effects | Possible faint hiss, pressure-like sensation for some users and wind noise from microphones. | Possible heat, clamp pressure or ear-canal discomfort from the seal. |
| What determines performance | Microphone placement, processing quality, battery state, fit and the predictability of the noise. | Tip or cushion seal, material, ear-cup shape, head movement and gaps. |
| Hearing-protection status | Not hearing protection unless the device is specifically labeled and tested with an applicable rating. | Not automatically hearing protection either; occupational protection requires an appropriate certified product. |
ANC and passive isolation are complementary rather than competing technologies. A well-sealed ANC headset can reduce low-frequency rumble electronically while its ear tips or cushions attenuate higher-frequency sound physically.
Which sounds ANC cancels best
Steady low-frequency noise
ANC is strongest when the sound is continuous and predictable. Aircraft and coach engines, subway rumble, ventilation systems, computer fans and the low drone of a generator are typical examples. Their waveforms change relatively slowly, giving the processor time to estimate and oppose them.

Voices and mid- to high-frequency sounds
Speech contains rapidly changing frequencies and arrives from different directions. ANC may reduce the low-frequency portion of a voice, but words, consonants and nearby conversations often remain audible. Passive sealing usually contributes more at these frequencies. If you need to hear announcements or colleagues, a transparency or ambient mode can deliberately feed outside microphone sound to the speakers; that mode is the opposite of isolation and should not be confused with cancellation.
Sudden or irregular sounds
A hand clap, dropped object, barking dog or slammed door can occur before the processor has enough information to generate an accurate anti-noise waveform. ANC may soften part of the event, but passive barriers and the physical distance between the source and your ear do most of the work.
Wind
Wind can strike external microphones directly. The resulting pressure changes may be amplified as low-frequency rumble or cause the ANC system to behave unpredictably. Wind-resistant microphone placement, a hood or hat that does not press against the microphones, and switching to a lower ANC level or passive mode can help.
How much reduction should you expect?
There is no single ANC decibel rating that applies to every headset, ear shape or environment. Performance depends on frequency, fit, microphone design, processing delay and the position of the sound source.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A 2017 Sennheiser technical white paper states: “Together, these components provide noise reduction up to 30 dB (at low frequencies) in addition to the 15-30 dB reduction passive provide (at high frequencies).” That figure describes the system discussed in that paper, not a universal specification for every current headphone. It also separates active low-frequency reduction from passive high-frequency attenuation; the numbers should not be added as a guaranteed broadband total.
When comparing products, look for measurements that identify the frequency range and test method. A marketing statement such as “up to” normally describes a best-case frequency or fit, not the reduction you will receive for speech, intermittent noise or an imperfect seal.
Why fit affects both technologies
Fit is the first troubleshooting step for ANC and passive isolation. For earbuds, choose the largest tip that seals comfortably without creating pain, then insert each earbud consistently. You should notice a stable low-frequency seal when you speak or move your jaw, but not sharp pressure. If the earbuds loosen while walking, isolation will vary and ANC may pulse or weaken.

For over-ear headphones, the cushion should surround the entire ear and contact your head all the way around. Glasses frames, thick hair, earrings or a twisted cushion can create gaps. Adjust the headband so the cups sit level, and replace flattened or cracked pads. A correct seal should not require excessive clamp force.
A practical fit check
- Play a constant low-frequency sound, such as an HVAC fan, at a safe listening level.
- Enable ANC while keeping the headset stationary. Note the reduction.
- Press the ear cups gently toward your head or reseat the earbuds. If the sound changes dramatically, the original seal was leaking.
- Turn your head, open your jaw and walk briefly. A large change indicates that the fit is moving.
- Try another tip size or adjust the headband before judging the electronics.
Do you need ANC if your earbuds already seal your ears?
A strong passive seal may be sufficient for offices, libraries, commuting at moderate volume or any situation where the main problem is speech and higher-frequency activity. ANC is most useful when the remaining noise is a persistent low-frequency drone that the seal alone does not reduce.
In-ear models with excellent tips can provide substantial passive attenuation, but they still may not remove the vibration and pressure of an engine. Conversely, an ANC headset with a poor seal may perform worse than a well-fitting passive model. Choose ANC for the noise pattern you face, not simply because the label sounds more advanced.
Battery use, controls and everyday behavior
ANC consumes power continuously while active. Battery life varies by design and by whether Bluetooth, high-resolution audio, spatial processing or transparency mode is also running. Some headsets offer a passive wired mode or continue playing after ANC is disabled; others require power for all audio functions. Check the device’s manual before relying on it during a long trip.
Most controls expose three states: ANC on, transparency or ambient mode, and off. Use ANC for steady background noise, transparency when you need announcements or conversation, and off when you want to conserve power or eliminate microphone hiss. A lower ANC setting can be more comfortable in wind or when maximum cancellation is unnecessary.

ANC is not automatically hearing protection
Consumer ANC headphones and earbuds should not be treated as occupational hearing protection. CDC/NIOSH states that active noise cancellation uses electronics and that headphones or earbuds “should not be considered hearing protection unless labeled with an NRR.” NRR means Noise Reduction Rating, a regulated attenuation value used for products intended and tested as hearing protectors.
IEC 60268-24:2023 covers active acoustic noise-cancelling headphones and earphones but explicitly excludes equipment intended for hearing protection. OSHA describes consumer ANC as active control aimed mainly at low frequencies combined with soundproofing for higher frequencies. For workplace exposure, protection must be selected from measured noise levels, the required attenuation and the rules that apply to your workplace.

If you work around machinery, firearms, aircraft or other hazardous sound, use hearing protection specifically labeled and certified for that exposure, and follow your employer’s hearing-conservation program.
How to choose between ANC models
Evaluate the complete system instead of focusing on the largest cancellation number. Use this checklist:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Low-frequency cancellation: Look for independent measurements or clearly described tests for the engine, train or HVAC noise you actually encounter.
- Passive seal and comfort: Check tip sizes, cushion shape, clamp pressure, heat buildup and whether replacement pads are available.
- Speech and transparency: If you need awareness, assess how naturally transparency mode reproduces voices and announcements.
- Fit stability: A headset that shifts during walking, chewing or travel will lose both passive and active performance.
- Wind handling: Outdoor users should consider microphone placement, wind-reduction modes and the ability to disable ANC quickly.
- Battery dependence: Confirm whether audio and passive listening work with a depleted battery and whether the stated runtime includes ANC.
- Safety rating: For hazardous environments, verify a certified NRR or other applicable hearing-protection rating rather than relying on consumer ANC specifications.
Troubleshooting common ANC problems
ANC seems weak
Reseat the earbuds or adjust the ear cups first. Try a different tip size, remove an obstruction from the cushion and check whether the headset’s app has a fit test or adaptive ANC setting. A low battery, blocked microphone port or software mode that limits cancellation can also reduce performance.
One ear sounds different
Unequal ear-tip placement, earwax, a blocked microphone or an uneven cushion seal can make one side cancel differently. Clean the device according to its instructions, swap tip sizes between ears if appropriate and repeat the fit check. If the imbalance remains with multiple sources and modes, the hardware may need service.
There is a hiss or pressure sensation
A faint hiss is a known consequence of active electronics and is easiest to notice in silence. Some listeners describe ANC as pressure, although the headset is not creating a vacuum; the sensation can result from the changed low-frequency sound field or individual sensitivity. Disable ANC, lower its level or use passive mode if it is distracting.
Wind makes ANC worse
Move the microphones out of direct airflow, use a wind-reduction setting if available, or switch to passive mode. A hood that rubs against an external microphone can create its own noise, so adjust clothing as well as the headset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe practical verdict
ANC is an electronic system for reducing predictable noise, especially low-frequency hum. Passive isolation is a physical seal that works without power and generally contributes more at higher frequencies. The most effective everyday headphones combine both, fit securely and let you switch between cancellation, transparency and off modes. Use ANC to improve listening comfort, but use separately certified hearing protection when sound exposure could damage hearing.
