An Ubuntu codename is the memorable adjective-and-animal name attached to a release, while the number identifies when that release first shipped. For example, Noble Numbat is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and Resolute Raccoon is Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The codename helps identify the release; it does not determine how long the release receives updates. Support depends on the version, whether it is LTS or interim, the repository and package, and any optional Ubuntu Pro coverage.
Ubuntu codenames and version numbers identify the same release in different ways
Ubuntu gives each release two complementary identifiers. The codename is designed to be memorable in conversation, documentation and development work. The numeric version is precise and time-based. You may see either one in installation media, software repositories, bug reports and upgrade tools.
What the codename means
Ubuntu’s naming pattern uses an alliterative adjective followed by an animal. Recent examples include Noble Numbat, Questing Quokka and Resolute Raccoon. The Ubuntu Wiki puts the general rule simply: “Each release has a codename.” Canonical’s historical naming explanation describes the adjective-and-animal, alliterative format.
The words are labels, not technical specifications. The adjective does not guarantee a feature, performance level, security property or support duration, and the animal does not indicate the desktop environment, kernel series or intended workload. Official material establishes the naming convention, but not a fixed policy meaning for every word chosen. Treat a codename as a human-friendly release name rather than a promise about the software.

How the version number works
Ubuntu’s version uses the year and month of the initial release in a two-part format. 24.04 means the first release arrived in April 2024; 26.04 means April 2026. A third number identifies a later point release, such as 24.04.5. A point release is still part of the 24.04 release series; it does not start a new support clock or become a separate codename.

Because the number contains a date, it is usually the fastest way to distinguish releases with similar names or to determine which lifecycle table entry applies. The codename remains useful when a guide, package source or support conversation uses the name instead of the number.
Ubuntu’s release cadence: six-month updates and two-year LTS milestones
Ubuntu follows a time-based cadence of roughly one release every six months. The long-term-support edition appears every two years, in April. Releases between LTS milestones are called interim releases. Both types are described as production quality, but they serve different maintenance strategies.
LTS releases prioritize a longer maintenance horizon
An LTS release is the normal choice for a server, workstation or organization that wants to avoid frequent distribution upgrades. Canonical recommends LTS for longer-term stability and production environments. The trade-off is that an LTS release generally does not include every new kernel, language runtime or toolchain as soon as it appears in an interim release.

Interim releases prioritize newer components
Interim releases arrive on the six-month schedule and are aimed at users and teams that want newer kernels, programming languages and development toolchains sooner. Their shorter lifecycle means an administrator must plan upgrades regularly rather than treating the installation as a multi-year base.
How long each Ubuntu release is supported
There is no single answer to “How long is Ubuntu supported?” The period changes with the release type, the maintenance tier and the packages involved. Always state which of these you mean when planning a deployment.

The table separates standard maintenance from optional extensions. Saying simply that “Ubuntu lasts 10 years” can be misleading: five years is the ordinary LTS standard period, while the longer totals depend on Ubuntu Pro, the applicable package set and the release’s terms. The release-specific lifecycle listing is the authority for dates and eligibility.

Standard LTS security maintenance is explicitly stated for packages in Main. Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro overview describes ESM coverage for Main and Universe, but package eligibility still depends on the release and repository. A system can therefore contain software with different maintenance status even when the operating-system version is the same. Check the package and repository rather than applying an LTS number to every installed component.

What ESM and Legacy change
Ubuntu Pro’s Expanded Security Maintenance is optional. For an eligible LTS release, the release list describes ESM as five years beyond the initial five-year standard period. Canonical’s lifecycle overview presents this as up to ten years of ESM coverage for Main and Universe through Pro. A paid Legacy add-on can add another five years after that period, for a possible total of 15 years for LTS releases. Plan and package terms can change, so verify the current release entry and subscription conditions before relying on the maximum.
Current release examples and their dates
The official release list checked on October 13, 2026, provides concrete examples. These dates are schedule information, not permanent characteristics of the codename, and should be rechecked before making a long-term support commitment.

The listed end-of-life date can include extended coverage and must not be read as the end of ordinary standard support. For 26.04, for example, the May 2031 date is the standard-support endpoint, while April 2041 is the lifecycle listing’s later end date. The same distinction applies to 24.04.

How to identify the release installed on a computer
Use the version number and codename shown by the operating system, then consult the official release list for the matching lifecycle. On an Ubuntu system, these commands display the local identification data:

- Open a terminal.
- Run
lsb_release -ato display the distributor ID, description, release number and codename when the command is available. - If that utility is unavailable, run
cat /etc/os-releaseand read theVERSION_IDandVERSION_CODENAMEfields. - Record the complete value, including a point-release number when shown, and whether the installation is Ubuntu itself or a recognized flavor.
- Match that release to the official Ubuntu “List of releases” entry and read the standard-support, ESM and end-of-life columns separately.
These commands tell you what is installed; they do not by themselves prove that every package remains covered. Repository, package and subscription status still matter.
Choosing between LTS and an interim release

Choose LTS when the cost of a distribution upgrade, compatibility testing or maintenance window is high. Choose an interim release when a required hardware enablement, compiler, language runtime or kernel feature is available there first and your team can complete another upgrade within nine months. Neither choice makes the codename more or less “supported”; the lifecycle policy is what matters.
Important caveats for Ubuntu flavors
Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server are not the only projects using Ubuntu release numbers. Recognized flavors can publish their own support arrangements. Ubuntu’s project documentation says flavor LTS support is generally three years, with exceptions. That means an Ubuntu-based desktop using a different official flavor may not share the five-year period associated with the main Ubuntu LTS release.
- Identify the exact flavor, not only the underlying Ubuntu version.
- Read that flavor’s official support policy for desktop packages and its release-specific dates.
- Do not transfer Ubuntu Desktop or Server dates to a flavor without checking its documentation.
- For mixed systems, track the operating-system lifecycle and the lifecycle of important flavor or third-party packages separately.
Common mistakes when reading Ubuntu support information
Confusing the codename with the support tier
Noble, Questing or Resolute does not tell you whether a release is LTS. Look for the LTS designation and the numeric version. The same adjective-and-animal format is used for interim releases.

Assuming a point release resets the lifecycle
24.04.5 remains in the 24.04 series. The extra digit identifies a refreshed image, not a new release with a new five-year clock.
Using the end-of-life column as the standard-support date
Release tables can show a later end-of-life date that includes ESM or Legacy. Compare it with the explicitly listed end of standard support before deciding whether a machine can remain on the ordinary, no-extension maintenance path.
Applying LTS promises to every package
The standard five-year statement is for Main repository packages. ESM can extend coverage and include Universe, but the applicable repository and release determine whether a particular package is covered.

A flavor may have a shorter or otherwise different lifecycle. Confirm the flavor before writing a patching or upgrade schedule.
A practical checklist for deployment and upgrades
- Write down both identifiers: the codename and the complete numeric version.
- Mark the release as LTS or interim.
- Find the release-specific standard-support date in Ubuntu’s official list.
- Inventory packages that come from Main, Universe, a flavor or another repository.
- Decide whether the nine-month interim cycle is operationally realistic.
- If planning beyond five years on an LTS system, verify current Ubuntu Pro ESM and Legacy terms rather than assuming coverage.
- Schedule an upgrade before the applicable support date, allowing time for application testing and rollback planning.
- Recheck dates before a procurement, compliance or long-term infrastructure decision because lifecycle tables are updated as policies and releases change.
This process turns a memorable codename into an actionable maintenance plan: identify the release, classify its support tier, check the package scope, and plan around the correct date.
