IP55 earbuds are dust resistant and tested to withstand a low-pressure water jet, but they are not waterproof or submersible. That makes brief use in light rain plausible for the rated earbud units, provided the product manual allows it. The charging case and its USB and charging contacts may have a different, or no, water-resistance rating.

After any exposure, wipe the earbuds and let them dry completely at room temperature before putting them in the case or charging them. Do not use IP55 as permission to swim, shower, submerge the earbuds, or expose them to salt water, pool water, soap or drinks.

What the two digits in IP55 mean

IP is the Ingress Protection Code defined by IEC 60529. The code describes how an enclosure performed in specified laboratory tests; it is not a general promise that a product will survive every situation involving dust or water. In an IP55 marking, the first 5 concerns solid particles and the second 5 concerns water.

First digit: 5 means limited dust ingress protection

The first digit is written as IP5X when the water result is being left out. Sony describes level 5 as “Protected against dust; limited ingress (no harmful deposit).” In practical terms, dust can enter in limited amounts, but the tested ingress must not create a harmful deposit. This is dust resistance, not a claim that the earbud enclosure is completely dust-tight.

That distinction matters for grit, pockets, gym bags and outdoor use. Dust protection can reduce the chance that ordinary particles interfere with the enclosure, but it does not make the earbuds immune to every fine powder or to contamination around microphones, speaker meshes and charging contacts.

Second digit: 5 means low-pressure water-jet resistance

The second digit is written as IPX5 when the dust result is omitted. Sony’s support guidance defines IPX5 as protection against low-pressure water-jet spray for at least three minutes. A water jet is a controlled test condition. It is different from dropping the earbuds into water, holding them under a tap for an extended period, or exposing them to pressure at depth.

Combining the two results gives IP55: limited dust ingress protection plus the IPX5 water-jet test. Neither digit says that the earbuds are waterproof in the everyday sense, and neither one covers the charging case unless the manufacturer assigns the same rating to that case.

Can you wear IP55 earbuds in the rain?

Possibly, but only within a cautious interpretation of the rating. Light rain or a brief splash can be consistent with the IPX5 test for the earbud units themselves. The rating does not establish how long you can remain outside, how the product behaves in a storm, or what happens when water enters through an open microphone, vent or imperfect seal.

Light rain is the lower-risk use case

A short walk in light rain is more comparable to incidental spray than to immersion. Keep the earbuds seated as intended, avoid touching them with wet hands, and leave the case in a dry pocket or bag. If rain becomes heavy, wind-driven or prolonged, move to shelter rather than treating IP55 as a duration guarantee.

Age, wear, drops, dirt and repeated opening of covers can change the condition of seals. Those factors are not represented by the original laboratory test. A model that was rated IP55 when new may have less protection after physical damage, and a rating for one component does not transfer automatically to another.

Situations where IP55 is not an adequate assumption

  • Do not swim, dive or intentionally submerge IP55 earbuds.
  • Do not use the rating as approval for a shower or a high-pressure hose.
  • Avoid seawater, chlorinated pool water, soap, shampoo, drinks and other liquids unless the product manual gives explicit instructions.
  • Do not assume that sweat exposure is identical to the IPX5 water-jet test. Sweat contains salts and can remain around contacts and openings; follow the model’s care instructions.
  • Stop using the earbuds if a crack, loose cover or other physical damage could have compromised the enclosure.

The manufacturer’s rain warning takes priority

Manufacturers can impose limits that are narrower than the code’s test. Sony’s water-damage guidance lists operating earbuds in the rain as a possible cause of water damage, even though Sony’s support material also explains the IPX5 test. That is why the manual and support page for your exact model outrank a generic interpretation of “IP55.”

Jabra describes its Elite 2 earbuds as dust resistant and able to resist a sustained, low-pressure water-jet spray. That statement explains what the rating covers; it is not a statement that every IP55 model, its case or every kind of rain is safe.

Is the charging case IP55 too?

Usually, you must verify the case separately. Earbud manufacturers often test and rate the small earbud housings while leaving the charging case with a different specification. A case can have exposed hinges, magnets, seams, a USB port and electrical contacts that are not protected to the same level as the earbuds.

Keep the case dry during rain and never put wet earbuds into it. Moisture trapped in the case can remain against the charging contacts, where it may cause corrosion or a malfunction. If the product documentation does not explicitly assign an IP rating to the case, treat the case as not water resistant rather than extending the earbuds’ rating to it.

  1. Remove the earbuds. Take them out of your ears and away from the charging case as soon as practical.
  2. Wipe the exterior. Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not press liquid farther into a mesh, seam or port.
  3. Dry at room temperature. Leave the earbuds in a dry, ventilated place until they are fully dry. Do not put them straight into the case.
  4. Keep the contacts dry. Check the charging contacts and any USB area on the case. Moisture there can lead to corrosion or charging failure.
  5. Do not accelerate drying with heat. Avoid a hair dryer, radiator or other hot source unless the model’s instructions specifically permit it. Room-temperature drying is the conservative option supported by the care guidance.
  6. Charge only after drying is complete. If any moisture remains, wait longer. Charging a wet earbud or wet case can turn a temporary exposure into a permanent fault.

If sound or charging is abnormal afterward

Stop charging and remove the earbuds from the case if charging is intermittent, a contact becomes unusually warm, audio remains muffled or the earbuds repeatedly disconnect. Let everything dry fully and inspect for visible damage. If the problem remains, use the manufacturer’s support process; do not keep cycling a potentially wet device through the charger.

How IP55 compares with other protection levels

The following comparison uses the water and dust labels relevant to earbud shopping. The exact enclosure, test duration and permitted use still depend on the manufacturer’s documentation.

Marking or level What the supplied definition covers What it does not establish by itself
IP5X Protected against dust with limited ingress and no harmful deposit. Complete dust tightness or protection of every opening and accessory.
IPX4 Splash resistance. Resistance to a low-pressure jet or immersion.
IPX5 Low-pressure water-jet spray for at least three minutes in Sony’s support description. Immersion, swimming, or a guarantee for prolonged or wind-driven rain.
IPX7 Temporary immersion level. Continued immersion or protection of a case unless separately stated.
IPX8 Continued immersion level. A universal depth, time limit or swimming approval; those conditions are set by the product documentation.
IP55 IP5X limited dust protection combined with IPX5 low-pressure water-jet resistance. Water resistance for the charging case, immersion protection or immunity to corrosive liquids.

For context, IEC 60529’s consolidated edition record is dated 2013. A product’s current manual can add operating restrictions, and those instructions remain the practical rule for that model.

What to check when choosing IP-rated earbuds

If rain and outdoor use are important, compare more than the two-character code. Check these items in the product documentation before buying or carrying the earbuds outside.

  • Dust level: Determine whether the marking is IP5X or IP6X. IP55 specifically establishes the level-5 dust result, not a complete dust-tight claim.
  • Water test level: Distinguish splash resistance (IPX4), jet resistance (IPX5), temporary immersion (IPX7) and continued immersion (IPX8).
  • Component coverage: Confirm whether the rating applies to both earbud units, the charging case, or only a particular part.
  • Rain instructions: Read the exact model’s support page. A manufacturer may warn against rain even when an earbud carries an IP rating.
  • Physical condition: Treat drops, cracks, worn seals and damaged covers as reasons to reduce confidence in the original rating.
  • Warranty language: Check how the manufacturer handles liquid damage. An IP rating is a test result, not an automatic promise that every water-related failure is covered.

Common questions about IP55 earbuds

Are IP55 earbuds waterproof?

No. IP55 indicates limited dust ingress protection and a low-pressure water-jet test. It is not an immersion or swimming rating.

Can IP55 earbuds survive sweat and rain?

Brief light-rain exposure may be reasonable for the rated earbud units if the manual permits it. Sweat, heavy rain and repeated exposure are not interchangeable with the controlled IPX5 test, so use the manufacturer’s restrictions and keep the earbuds and contacts clean and dry.

Can I put wet IP55 earbuds in the case?

No. Wipe them and let them dry fully at room temperature first. The case and charging contacts may not share the earbuds’ IP55 rating, and moisture at the contacts can cause corrosion or malfunction.

Does IP55 protect against salt water or chlorine?

Do not assume it does. Seawater and chlorinated water are specifically liquids to avoid unless the product manual gives explicit instructions. Rinse or cleaning procedures should come from the manufacturer, not from the IP code alone.

What does “at least three minutes” refer to?

It is Sony’s description of the IPX5 low-pressure water-jet spray test. It is a laboratory test duration, not a recommended time for wearing earbuds in rain.
