An Android TV launcher controls the home interface: how it presents apps and any launcher-supported content. A different launcher can replace stock Home on some devices, but Android’s support for replacement does not guarantee your TV or streaming device offers a setting to choose one—or that its Home button will reliably open it. Customizing the built-in screen and replacing it are different tasks.

What an Android TV launcher changes

A launcher is the app that provides the device’s home interface. It determines how that screen presents apps and other content the launcher supports. The stock launcher is the one supplied as the device’s normal home experience; a third-party launcher is an alternative app that may offer a different layout or way to reach apps.

Changing launchers is therefore a change to the home experience, not necessarily a change to the TV’s underlying operating system or to every part of its interface. The available features depend on the launcher and on what the device’s firmware allows it to do. Do not assume that an alternative launcher will reproduce stock recommendations, voice or search integration, manufacturer tabs, or other platform-specific features: those capabilities are not established as universal.

Google’s Android TV Help describes stock Home as a screen that can include apps, shows in progress, suggested content and personalized recommendations, with tabs such as Home, Discover, Apps and Settings. The exact arrangement and available controls vary by device. A replacement launcher changes the home interface it provides; it does not automatically mean that every screen or service on the device has changed.

That distinction matters if you are choosing a launcher because you want fewer recommendations, a different app arrangement, or a simpler starting screen. A replacement can change how the home interface presents supported content, but available information does not establish that all launchers offer the same layout controls or that they can reproduce every stock feature. Evaluate the specific launcher and the device together rather than treating “Android TV launcher” as a promise of one standard feature set.

Customizing stock Home is not the same as replacing it

Android TV may let you adjust parts of the built-in Home screen, such as channel rows, previews or recommendation settings. These controls personalize stock Home. They do not make another app the default launcher, and they do not by themselves change what happens when you press the remote’s Home button.

Action What changes What it does not establish
Customize stock Home Settings exposed by the device can change the built-in screen’s rows, previews, app arrangement or recommendations. It does not select a third-party app as the system home screen or guarantee different Home-button behavior.
Replace stock Home A different app serves as the home experience, potentially including when Home is pressed. It does not guarantee that every device provides a selection setting or that stock integrations remain available.

Google cautions that not all Android TVs expose the same home-screen settings. If your goal is only to reorder or reduce stock content, look for the home-screen controls documented for your exact device before installing another app. If the goal is to make Home open a different interface, investigate whether the device supports choosing a home app; row and recommendation settings are not a substitute.

A practical way to identify which goal you have is to ask what you expect to happen after pressing Home. If you want the existing stock interface with different rows or previews, you are looking for customization. If you want a different app to appear whenever you return to the device’s home experience, you are looking for replacement. Changing settings in one category should not be assumed to accomplish the other.

Can a third-party launcher replace the stock screen?

At the Android platform level, yes: the Android Open Source Project’s Compatibility Definition Document, section 3.8.1, says Android includes a launcher and supports third-party applications replacing the device launcher. That is a platform capability statement. It is not a promise that every consumer TV exposes a universal launcher picker, behaves identically, or routes the remote’s Home button to the chosen app.

The practical answer is device-specific. The TV or streaming-device maker’s implementation, firmware version and launcher all matter. A launcher app may be available on a device without being selectable as its system home. Even if a selection or workaround works initially, the important question is whether the device continues opening that launcher when Home is pressed, including after a restart.

Google TV and Android TV are not one uniform interface. Google’s guidance describes differences that can depend on device, region, account mode and availability; some devices may also show a manufacturer tab in certain regions. Menu labels and the stock experience can therefore differ. Check the exact model and software version rather than relying on a tutorial for a different television or streaming device.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

So the answer to “can I change the default launcher?” is conditional: Android supports third-party replacement, but a particular product must also provide a working route to make that replacement effective. The answer to “can I make the Home button open a different launcher?” is likewise not universal. Confirm the Home-button behavior for the exact device rather than inferring it from the fact that the alternative app installs or opens.

Why seeing an app on the TV does not mean it is the launcher

There are two separate questions: can you find and open an app in the TV interface, and can that app take over the home-screen role? Android TV developer guidance explains that a TV app needs the CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER filter to appear in the TV user interface. That concerns app discoverability. It does not mean the app has become the system launcher or that pressing Home will open it.

This distinction is useful when troubleshooting. If an app does not appear in the TV interface, its TV discoverability may be the issue. If it appears and opens normally but Home returns to stock Home, visibility is not the problem; the device may not offer a supported selection route, or its Home-button behavior may not be controlled by the app. Installing or opening an app alone does not prove that replacement is configured.

In other words, “listed as a TV app,” “can be launched from the app interface,” and “serves as the device’s home screen” describe different things. The developer guidance about CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER addresses the first of these, not the last. Do not use an app’s presence in a menu as evidence that the Home key has been redirected.

Check compatibility before trying to switch

Before changing settings or following a workaround, identify the device and its software precisely. A guide for one model or firmware may not apply to another device, even when both are marketed as Android TV or Google TV. Look for instructions from the device manufacturer that specifically cover selecting a home app and the relevant software version.

  • Model and software: Note the exact TV or streaming-device model and the installed firmware or system version.
  • Selection method: Confirm whether the manufacturer documents a consumer-facing Home-app or launcher setting for that model. Available information does not establish a universal menu path.
  • Home-button result: Check whether the documented method says what happens when Home is pressed, rather than merely how to open the alternative app.
  • Remote navigation: Consider whether the alternative interface can be operated with the supplied remote’s directional pad and buttons.
  • Features you rely on: Decide whether stock recommendations, voice or search features, or manufacturer-specific tabs matter to you. Their behavior in a replacement setup is not guaranteed.
  • Undo route: Find the manufacturer’s recovery or reset guidance before using a method that changes system behavior.

These checks help distinguish a normal app installation from a true launcher change. If the documentation does not confirm Home-button behavior for your model, treat replacement as unverified rather than assuming it will work because Android supports the capability in general.

Use a cautious sequence: first identify whether customization alone would meet your goal; next check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and version; then verify what those instructions say about selecting a home app and pressing Home. Only after that should you assess whether the launcher works with your remote and whether it retains the features you use. If a proposed route relies on a workaround instead of a documented setting, look for the specific project’s current guidance and a verified way to undo the change before proceeding.

  • Chromecast Built-in: Easily cast movies, shows, and photos from your Android or iOS device to your Android TV

This is not a universal menu-by-menu tutorial because available sources do not establish one set of screens or steps for every Android TV and Google TV device. Settings, controls and available home-screen options can differ. A model-specific guide is more useful than a generic sequence that could describe a different firmware implementation.

What to expect from device-specific workarounds

Some launcher projects document ways to make an alternative interface easier to use, including a built-in settings route, accessibility-based Home-button handling, key remapping or disabling a system package with ADB. These are examples of project- and device-specific techniques, not standard steps for every Android TV product. The LTvLauncher project, for example, documents such approaches and warns that Google TV may continue to prioritize its stock launcher.

These methods have different implications. A setting offered by a device or launcher is not equivalent to intercepting a remote key through an accessibility service. Nor is either equivalent to disabling a system package. The latter changes system behavior and the project warns that it carries risks. Do not disable packages or apply ADB commands based on generic instructions that do not match your exact device and software.

If you consider a workaround, follow only current instructions that identify your model and version, and understand how to reverse the change before proceeding. If the device stops behaving as expected, use the recovery steps supplied for that device or undo the exact change using the same verified instructions. Available guidance does not establish a universal recovery sequence, so a generic command or reset procedure would be unsafe to prescribe.

Think of a workaround as a separate compatibility question, not as proof that a launcher is supported across the platform. A method documented for one launcher or device may depend on that project’s settings or on a particular device implementation. Available information does not verify that the same accessibility, remapping or ADB approach works elsewhere, so do not copy it across models without matching instructions.

How to decide whether replacement is worth it

The decision is less about whether an alternative screen looks preferable and more about whether the complete interaction works on your hardware. Use the following comparison when reviewing a launcher or a method to activate it:

Question Why it matters What to verify
Does Home open the chosen launcher? Opening the app manually is different from replacing the home experience. Model-specific documentation and behavior after pressing Home, including after restart.
Is the method supported on this firmware? Menu options and workarounds can differ between devices and software versions. Instructions matching the exact model and installed version.
Can you use it with the remote? A home screen that is difficult to navigate with the supplied controls may be impractical. Directional-pad and button navigation in the interface.
Which stock features do you need? Replacement does not guarantee the same recommendations, search, voice or manufacturer features. Whether the feature is documented as working in the proposed setup.
Can you reverse the change? Interception or system-package changes can have more consequences than choosing a normal app. A verified undo or recovery procedure for the same device and method.

The comparison also helps clarify the tradeoff. A stock customization changes only the built-in screen settings the device exposes. A replacement changes which app provides the home experience, if the device permits that role. A workaround may try to affect Home-button behavior or system-package behavior, but it can introduce additional risk and is not interchangeable with an ordinary selection setting.

If your main aim is a tidier stock screen, start with the built-in customization settings your device offers. If you specifically want another app to open from Home, proceed only when the device’s own guidance or reliable model-specific documentation confirms that route. A platform-level capability is not enough to infer a safe procedure for an individual TV.

The practical answer

An Android TV launcher changes the home interface and the way that launcher presents apps and supported content. Stock Home can often be personalized through the controls a device exposes, while replacing it requires the device to allow another app to take the home role and to handle the Home button as intended. Android supports third-party launcher replacement at the platform level, but the consumer-facing option and its reliability vary by device, firmware and launcher. Verify those details for your exact model before making system-level changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does installing a launcher app make it the default on Android TV?

No. Installing or opening an app does not by itself make it the system launcher. The device must provide a supported way to select it or use a device-specific method, and Home-button behavior should be verified for the exact model and firmware.

How do I change the default launcher on Android TV?

There is no universal menu path established for every Android TV or Google TV device. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and software version, and confirm that they cover selecting a home app and what happens when you press Home.

Can I make the remote’s Home button open a different launcher?

Sometimes, depending on the device implementation, firmware and launcher. Android’s platform support for third-party replacement does not guarantee that a particular remote’s Home button will open the alternative. Verify the behavior with model-specific instructions, including after restart.

Does changing Home screen rows replace the stock launcher?

No. Changing rows, previews or recommendation settings customizes the built-in Home screen. It does not select another app as the launcher or establish different Home-button behavior.

Why does my launcher appear in the TV interface but Home still opens stock Home?

App visibility and system-home replacement are separate. Android TV’s CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER filter concerns whether a TV app appears in the TV user interface; it does not make the app the system launcher or route Home to it.

Are ADB or Home-button workarounds safe on every Android TV?

No universal workaround or recovery sequence is established. Launcher projects may document accessibility handling, key remapping or ADB package disabling for particular cases, and disabling system packages carries risks. Use only current instructions verified for your model and software, and know the recovery route first.

The Bottom Line

Android supports third-party launcher replacement, but whether your TV offers a safe, reliable way to do it—and whether Home opens the alternative—depends on the exact device, firmware and launcher. Customize stock Home through its own settings if that is all you need; verify model-specific instructions before attempting replacement or a workaround.
