An AI prompt engineer designs, tests, evaluates, and improves the instructions and context given to AI systems so their responses better fit a task. Prompt engineering is a practice; “prompt engineer” is a job title used by some employers, but available evidence does not establish one standardized occupation or universal job scope.
What is an AI prompt engineer?
OpenAI defines prompt engineering as “the process of designing and optimizing input prompts to effectively guide a language model’s responses.” In practical terms, the engineer turns a need into instructions a model can act on, then checks and refines the results. The work is not about finding magic words that reliably control every model; prompts need to be assessed in the context of the model and task.
OpenAI’s API guidance recommends clear, specific instructions, placing instructions at the beginning, separating context, using examples where helpful, and stating the desired output format. These are practical techniques, not a guarantee that a model will respond correctly.

What does the work involve?
- Define the task. Translate a user or business need into a specific request and identify what a useful result must contain.
- Prepare instructions and context. Give the model relevant information, constraints, tone, examples, and an output format when those details matter.
- Test the prompt. Review model responses against the task’s requirements rather than assuming the wording will work on its first try.
- Refine and document. Adjust instructions based on observed results, record what works, and check how changes affect quality.
- Consider safety and impact. Assess whether the prompt could lead to harmful outputs, particularly when connected to tools or used in consequential workflows.
UK Government guidance, updated 3 August 2026, identifies preventing harm from queries sent to a large language model as an important prompt-engineering responsibility. That makes safety part of the work, not an optional finishing step.

Is prompt engineer a standardized job?
The reviewed sources do not establish a universal definition, credential, or scope for the job title. Some organizations may hire for dedicated prompt-engineering work; in others, prompt design may sit inside a broader role that owns the whole workflow, evaluation, and user impact. Job descriptions therefore matter more than the title alone.
A 2025 study of 20,662 LinkedIn job postings found 72 listings for prompt-engineer positions—under 0.5% of the postings in that sample. This is a finding about the study’s dataset and coding, not a count of every available role or a forecast for the entire labor market. The study does not establish that prompt engineering is either a guaranteed career path or a disappearing one.

What skills are useful?
Prompt engineering draws on communication and task understanding as well as familiarity with AI systems. In the 2025 LinkedIn-posting study, researchers coded sampled skill categories as follows:
| Skill category | Share in the study’s coded sample |
|---|---|
| AI knowledge | 22.8% |
| Communication | 21.9% |
| Prompt-design skills | 18.7% |
| Creative problem-solving | 15.8% |
These percentages describe the study’s sample and coding; they are not estimates of how many employers overall require each skill. The evidence does not establish a universal credential requirement. Demonstrating clear writing, systematic testing, sound evaluation, and attention to safety is more meaningful than assuming a certificate is required for every role.

How does prompt work fit into other occupations?
Prompt design can be one part of work in another field rather than a separate job. OpenAI Economic Research analyzed more than 800,000 messages from U.S. ChatGPT users and found that 16.8% of work-related messages and 43.5% of occupation-specific messages concerned tasks associated with another occupation. Those figures describe cross-occupation use in that message dataset; they do not count prompt-engineer jobs or show whether standalone roles are growing or shrinking.
When assessing a role, look at three dimensions:
- Scope: Does it focus on writing prompts, or include ownership of the larger AI workflow?
- Method: Is the work ad hoc instruction writing, or does it include measured iteration and evaluation?
- Responsibility: Who is accountable for response quality, user impact, and safety?
Because employers can define the title differently, these questions help reveal what a particular position actually entails.

What to take away
An AI prompt engineer shapes and improves the inputs that guide AI responses, using testing and evaluation rather than relying on a one-time formulation. The underlying skills can apply across occupations, but the job title is not standardized, and the available job-posting evidence is limited to one sample. Treat any career claim or credential requirement as specific to the employer and market being discussed.
