On a standard Echo speaker, a cyan spotlight on a blue ring means Alexa is listening. A brief blue glimmer can mean Alexa is processing your request or receiving a software update; a slowly spinning teal-and-blue light means the speaker is starting up or restarting after an update. The device model and the light’s movement matter, because Echo screens and some newer speakers use different patterns.
Read the light pattern on a standard Echo speaker
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cyan spotlight on a blue ring | Alexa is listening. Amazon’s Echo light guide describes this as the listening indicator. |
| Brief blue glimmer | Alexa may have heard you and be processing the request, or the speaker may be receiving a software update, according to Amazon’s light guide. |
| Slowly spinning teal and blue | The speaker is starting up. If an update has completed, the same slow spin can indicate that the device is restarting, as explained in Amazon’s guide. |
These descriptions apply to the standard Echo speaker ring. A blue light that moves or fades briefly is not necessarily the same state as the cyan spotlight held on the ring.
Check whether your Echo has a screen or a newer light pattern
Echo devices with screens
On an Echo with a screen, look at the light bar rather than a speaker ring. A cyan spotlight on a blue bar indicates that Alexa is listening; the spotlight moves briefly while Alexa processes a request. Teal blue means the device is ready for you to speak without first saying the wake word. See Amazon’s screen-device indicator guidance.
Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio (2025 release)
Amazon’s guidance for these newer models uses distinct descriptions: two pulsing blue lights mean Alexa is listening, blue moving through the ring means it is processing, and a pulsing blue light at the bottom means Alexa is responding. Consult the model-specific Echo light guidance if your device matches one of these models; do not assume its patterns map exactly to the standard ring.

Does a blue light mean Alexa is recording?
Amazon says a visual indicator appears when an Echo detects its wake word or when you press the Action button to activate Alexa. It indicates that the device is recording the request to stream to the cloud. The audio stream includes a fraction of a second before the wake word and closes when Alexa determines the interaction has ended. Read Amazon’s explanation of Alexa indicators and microphone controls.
To disconnect the microphones, press the microphone enable/disable button on the Echo. Amazon says microphone power is disconnected and a dedicated red light comes on; voice interaction is unavailable while the microphones are off. Blue is not the microphone-muted indicator: Amazon identifies solid red as the microphone-off state on speakers.
