A pre-market stock price is a quote or completed trade recorded during an extended-hours session before the regular U.S. market opens. It shows what participants on a particular trading venue were recently willing to pay or accept at a specific time—not a guaranteed opening price and not necessarily the price you can obtain.
Because pre-market trading usually has fewer participants, wider bid-ask spreads and less coordination between venues, the displayed number can move sharply, differ between services and change substantially before 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Use it as a snapshot of early interest, then check the quote details, news and your broker’s order rules before acting.
What is a pre-market stock price?
For U.S. exchange-traded stocks, regular trading generally runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Pre-market trading is part of the broader extended-hours market that can occur before that regular session. The exact early session, eligible securities and order types depend on the broker and trading venue; there is no single universal pre-market schedule.

Last-traded price
This is the price at which the most recent transaction was completed. It may be several minutes old, may represent a small order and may no longer be available. A last trade does not show every current buyer or seller.
Bid, ask or quote
The bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is offering. The ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is requesting. Their difference is the bid-ask spread. A quote can show current interest even when no trade has occurred recently, but the displayed size may be limited and can disappear before an order reaches the market.
The Investor.gov stock glossary explains these quote terms, while the SEC’s Extended-Hours Trading investor bulletin warns that an extended-hours price may not reflect the stock’s price during regular hours.

Why is a stock moving before the market opens?
New information
Companies can release earnings, forecasts, regulatory filings, product announcements or other material information outside regular hours. Economic data, industry news and overseas market moves can also change what traders are willing to pay. Such news can produce a large pre-market move, but it does not guarantee that the move will continue after the opening.
Thin liquidity
Extended-hours trading generally attracts less interest and price competition than the regular session. A stock may not trade at all for a period. When only a small number of orders are present, one relatively small transaction can move the last-traded price noticeably.

Wider spreads and venue differences
Electronic trading systems used outside regular hours are not necessarily linked to one another. Two services can therefore show different bids, asks or last trades for the same stock at the same moment. A wide spread means the price to buy (the ask) can be materially higher than the price available to sell (the bid). A displayed last trade between those prices may not be an executable price for your order size.
Does the pre-market price predict the opening price?
No. It is an indication of early trading interest, not a promise of where the regular session will open. The information behind the move can change, additional orders can arrive, and liquidity usually changes when regular trading begins. Prices can also differ across unlinked extended-hours systems.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe SEC’s June 6, 2022 bulletin states: “The prices of some stocks traded during extended-hours trading may not reflect the prices of those stocks during regular hours, either at the end of the regular trading session or upon the opening of regular trading the next business day.” Treat a pre-market percentage gain or loss as context, not as a forecast or a guaranteed overnight return.
A more useful question is what the display actually represents: a fresh quote or an old trade, from which venue, at what time and for what quantity. Those details tell you how much weight to place on the number.
Can you buy or sell at the pre-market price?
Only if your order reaches a venue that is open, the security is eligible, your broker accepts that order and a counterparty is available at the price and size you specify. The number shown on a screen is not an offer that must remain available.

Market orders
A market order seeks execution but does not guarantee a particular price. In a thin market, the next available price can be far from the last trade or from the quote you saw when submitting the order. The SEC’s Understanding Order Types bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, describes this distinction.
Limit orders
A buy limit states the maximum price you will pay; a sell limit states the minimum price you will accept. A limit order provides price control but is not guaranteed to fill. If the market never reaches your limit, or there is insufficient size at that price, the order can remain unexecuted or expire.
Broker and security rules
Many firms accept only limit orders during extended hours, but policies differ. Check your broker’s current documentation for:
- Pre-market start and end times, including whether the schedule changes by day or holiday.
- Eligible stocks, exchange-traded products and account types.
- Whether orders are routed to one venue or multiple venues.
- Accepted order types, minimum quantities and displayed or hidden liquidity.
- Whether an order applies only to the extended session or carries into regular hours.
- Commission, fee and risk disclosures that apply to extended-hours transactions.
How to read a pre-market display correctly
Before interpreting a number as meaningful—or placing an order—check each field in the quote. If a service does not identify these details, its headline price deserves extra caution.

Do not assume that a quote displayed for 500 shares can fill an order for 5,000 shares. Available liquidity can change as soon as other orders are submitted or canceled.

What risks are specific to pre-market trading?
Execution risk
Your order may not fill, may fill only partially or may execute at a different price than the one you expected. A market order is especially exposed to rapid price changes and a thin order book.
Price volatility
With fewer orders competing, a new order or headline can move the quote abruptly. A large percentage move on a small number of shares does not establish that the entire market values the stock at that level.
Information risk
Early trading may react to an initial headline before the full filing, call transcript or clarification is available. Confirm what actually happened and whether the information is company-specific, sector-wide or unrelated noise.
Access and cancellation risk
A broker may reject an order because the security is ineligible, the session is closed or the order type is not allowed. An order that is valid in extended hours may have a different duration or routing instruction than one submitted during regular trading.
A practical pre-market checklist
- Identify the session. Confirm that the quote is labeled pre-market or extended hours and note the Eastern Time timestamp.
- Separate trade from quote. Determine whether the displayed figure is a last trade, bid, ask or another calculated value.
- Check the venue and spread. Record the data source, bid, ask and displayed size. A broad spread or tiny size signals that the headline price may be difficult to trade.
- Find the explanation. Look for the company’s release, filing or other event that could account for the move. Do not infer a cause from the chart alone.
- Decide whether immediacy is necessary. If the objective can wait, reassess when more participants and information are available in regular hours.
- Review the order ticket. Verify session eligibility, order type, limit price, quantity, duration and whether the order will carry into the regular session.
- Use a limit only if its boundary matches your plan. A limit controls the worst acceptable price but can remain unfilled; changing it impulsively can defeat that purpose.
- Confirm the result. After submission, check whether the order filled fully, partially or not at all, and at what price.
Illustrative example: why the numbers can differ
Imagine a company releases an announcement before the open. One venue records a small trade at $42.00. Another service shows a bid of $41.70 and an ask of $42.40, while a third display has not updated its last-trade field. None of these figures is necessarily wrong: they describe different observations, times or venues.

If you submit a market buy while the ask is $42.40, your execution could occur above the earlier $42.00 trade. A buy limit at $42.05 would cap the price but might not fill. When regular trading starts, a new wave of orders and additional interpretation of the announcement could move the stock either direction. The example demonstrates why a single pre-market number cannot be treated as a guaranteed opening quote.
When is a pre-market quote useful?
It can help you see whether a stock is attracting early attention, identify a possible news-driven gap and prepare a conditional plan. It is most informative when you evaluate the timestamp, venue, spread, size and reason for the move together.
It is less useful as a standalone signal when the display shows an old trade, the spread is wide, the available size is small or no clear information explains the move. In those cases, waiting for a more liquid market can reduce uncertainty, although it cannot eliminate normal investment risk.

Bottom line
A pre-market stock price is a time-and-venue-specific snapshot of extended-hours trading. It may be a last trade or a current quote, and either can differ from the price available to you or from the regular-session opening price. Use the SEC’s guidance, inspect the quote details, understand your broker’s rules and choose an order type with its execution trade-off in mind. The number is useful context—but it is never a guarantee.
