To steer a local model as a coding agent, configure four separate pieces: a local inference runtime, a model it can serve, an agent harness that can work with your files and tools, and project instructions that explain how your codebase should be handled. Then give the agent a bounded task and review its proposed actions, edits, and validation results.
What does a local coding agent need?
A local model does not become a coding agent simply because it runs on your computer. The model generates responses; the runtime serves the model; the harness manages the coding workflow; and repository instructions preserve project-specific rules across tasks.
- Runtime: Runs inference and exposes a way for software to send it prompts.
- Model: The language model that interprets instructions and generates code or tool requests.
- Agent harness: Connects the model to capabilities such as reading and editing files, running commands, and managing sessions. It also determines how tool calls and approvals work.
- Project guidance: Repository-level instructions or skills that capture conventions and repeatable workflows.
Keep these layers distinct when troubleshooting. If the model responds but cannot inspect files, the missing piece may be the harness or its permissions—not the runtime. If it edits code in a way that conflicts with team conventions, the project guidance may be missing or unclear.

Choose a harness that supports your runtime and the file and command tools your work requires. For example, Aider documents support for Ollama and a broad range of model connections. OpenJet documents connections to Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, and other OpenAI-compatible local servers. These are examples of documented integrations, not a claim that every harness works with every local model.

Start by confirming that the harness can reach the runtime’s endpoint and use the intended model. Then check which tools it can access and what permissions apply. A terminal-based pair-programming tool, an IDE agent interface, and a separate harness connected to a model server may all support coding tasks, but their tool access, approval controls, context handling, and privacy behavior can differ.

Where should project rules go?
Put durable conventions where the harness will load them for work in the repository. Depending on the tool, that may mean a project instruction file, custom instructions, or an Agent Skill for a recurring workflow. Aider documents how to specify coding conventions; Visual Studio Code documents custom instructions and Agent Skills for shared guidance and repeatable tasks.
Make instructions concrete and scoped to the project. Useful guidance can identify formatting and naming conventions, testing expectations, relevant directories, or steps that should happen before a change is considered complete. Avoid relying on a one-time chat message for a rule the agent should follow on future tasks.

Keep task-specific directions separate from durable project rules. For each request, state the desired outcome, important constraints, files or components to focus on, and how you will check completion. That makes it easier to tell whether the agent followed the request and whether the resulting change is acceptable.

How much context should the agent have?
Check the effective context window across the model, runtime, and harness. The usable limit may be constrained by more than the model’s advertised capacity, and a runtime’s default may be too small for the harness or task.

When a task involves a large repository or many files, confirm the configured context before assuming the agent has seen all relevant material. A smaller, well-chosen set of relevant files can also make the task easier to review than an unnecessarily broad prompt.

Verify the destinations of both model traffic and tool activity. A local model endpoint alone does not establish that every part of the agent workflow stays on your machine: the harness may use other services, and tools may access external resources.
OpenJet says that when its local profile is selected, “The model, agent loop, tool execution, and session state remain on hardware you control.” Its documentation also describes an airgapped: true mode that rejects non-loopback endpoints. Those statements apply to that software’s documented configuration, not to local-agent software generally. Check the specific harness and tools you plan to use.

What hardware does a local coding agent need?
There is no universal hardware specification for local coding agents. Requirements vary with the model, quantization, context length, runtime, and harness. OpenJet’s undated documentation, accessed in 2026, lists Apple silicon with at least 24 GB of unified memory or a GPU with at least 14 GB of VRAM as options for its terminal coding agent; it also says CPU-only use can work. These are OpenJet’s stated options, not a general performance benchmark or guarantee that a particular model will run well.

What should you review before accepting an agent’s work?
Treat the agent as a tool-assisted collaborator, not an automatic approval system. Follow the harness’s approval flow, inspect changes, and look at the validation results before accepting the work.

- Read approval requests before allowing commands or other sensitive actions.
- Inspect the full diff for unintended edits, missing requirements, and changes outside the task’s scope.
- Check the tests or other validation results, and run the relevant checks yourself when appropriate.
- If the result is wrong, narrow the task, clarify the applicable project rule, or adjust the harness’s permitted tools before asking for another change.
