A console’s sticker price is only the starting point. Over a year or three, your total may also include games, online memberships, optional accessories or storage, and electricity—but the last four costs depend on how you play. There is no useful universal “true cost” without specifying the console, region, and ownership period. Use the framework below to build a budget for your own situation.
Start with a time period and a cost formula
Choose a period, such as one year or three years, and keep the same period for every recurring expense. Then estimate:
Total ownership cost = console + games bought + memberships + optional accessories or storage + electricity during the period.

Use prices for your country and check retailers for current street prices, bundles, and promotions. The U.S. figures below are dated reference points, not a like-for-like lifetime-cost comparison across platforms.

How much is the console itself?
PlayStation 5: U.S. recommended prices
Sony’s U.S. recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, were $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony announced the increase on March 27, 2026, citing continued pressures in the global economic landscape. Sony’s price announcement gives the dated figures; retailer prices may differ.
The Digital Edition does not have a disc drive, so games must be obtained digitally unless a compatible add-on drive is used. Consider how you prefer to buy games, whether you already own disc games, and whether you value buying or borrowing physical copies when choosing a model.
Xbox: check the current model price
Microsoft announced worldwide Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026: $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models. The announcement also said the 2 TB model would be discontinued and certified refurbished consoles were available for up to $100 off MSRP. Because the announcement describes increases rather than a full current price list, verify the exact price and availability of the model you want on Xbox’s official news page or with a retailer.

Nintendo: confirm the model and regional price
Nintendo’s membership prices are listed below, but the U.S. price examples here do not establish a current console hardware price. Hardware and membership prices vary by country; check Nintendo’s official store for the region and model you intend to buy.
Budget for games separately
Estimate game spending from the titles you actually expect to play and how often you buy them. Decide whether you will buy games individually, use a subscription catalog, or combine the two. No representative current game basket or reliable average game price is established here, so a single assumed annual game budget would be misleading.
Subscription access is not the same as owning every game permanently. For Sony subscriptions, the U.S. terms say: “Upon cancellation of a subscription, you will not be able to access content or services provided with your subscription except as permitted by us.” Read the terms for the particular service and plan you choose.

Count memberships only if you need their benefits
Memberships can add a recurring cost, but the plans below include different benefits and should not be treated as interchangeable. These are U.S. prices displayed on the providers’ pages accessed October 11, 2026.

For a one-year estimate, multiply a recurring plan’s cost by the number of years you expect to keep it. If you pay monthly or every three months, use the actual billing option you would choose rather than silently treating it as an annual plan. Nintendo says prices depend on country, so do not apply these U.S. figures elsewhere.
A suitable current Xbox Game Pass price and online-play requirements are not established here. Check Xbox’s current plan terms before including a membership in an Xbox budget.

Add accessories and storage only when you need them
An extra controller may matter if you play local multiplayer; a headset may be useful for voice chat or private listening. Additional storage can be relevant if you keep many installed games. These are optional, not unavoidable costs for every buyer, and the available evidence does not establish current accessory or storage prices or compatibility for each console. Check the console maker’s compatibility guidance before buying storage or peripherals.

For several usage patterns, calculate each separately and add them for the period you chose. The inputs are not established here, so this article does not supply a fabricated typical bill.
Build a budget without mixing unlike costs
- Set the scope: write down your country, console model, and whether you are estimating one year or several.
- Enter the hardware cost: use a current local price for the exact model, including any bundle you actually plan to buy.
- List intended games: estimate purchases title by title or use your own expected buying cadence.
- Add relevant memberships: include a plan only if you need its online-play access or other benefits. Use its actual billing interval and account for renewal.
- Add conditional extras: include a controller, headset, or storage only if your setup requires it, using current compatible product prices.
- Estimate electricity: use your console’s power figure, expected hours, and local utility rate.
- Sum the costs over the same period: keep one-time purchases separate from recurring charges so you can see what is optional and what repeats.
The result is a personal estimate, not a universal platform ranking. A buyer who plays offline and purchases few games may have little recurring cost; someone who wants paid online multiplayer, a large game library, extra storage, or more controllers will need a larger budget.
