A “borderless” monitor has a very slim bezel that is hard to notice from the front; it does not literally have no frame or inactive edge. The term describes the monitor’s appearance, not a guaranteed improvement in picture quality or performance.

What “borderless” means on a monitor

Monitor makers use “borderless,” “frameless,” “bezel-less” and “thin-bezel” to describe a similar design: a narrow visible frame around the screen. These are descriptive terms, not a universal technical standard with one required bezel width. Samsung’s explanation puts it plainly: “All monitors need a bezel, so ‘bezel-less’ essentially means ‘very minimal bezel.’” Samsung Insights uses that phrasing without naming an individual speaker.

The image is produced by the panel’s active area. The bezel is the physical frame outside that area; it can help support the display and protect the panel’s edges. A thinner-looking frame makes the picture seem to reach closer to the monitor’s outer edge, but it cannot eliminate the panel’s physical structure.

Why a dark edge can remain

A slim outside frame does not necessarily mean that illuminated pixels extend all the way to the monitor’s edge. Display circuitry surrounds the active area, and LCD panels may retain a black matrix area near the edge to help prevent light leakage. That can leave a dark strip between the visible picture and the casing, even on a product marketed as borderless. Samsung Display describes circuitry around the active display area, while Xiaomi’s explanation discusses the LCD edge area.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

So there can be two different edges to notice: the outside bezel or frame, and the inactive dark area between the image and that frame. A product’s “borderless” label generally refers to the first, not a promise that the second is absent. Their appearance varies by model.

What the design changes—and what it does not

The visual effect

The main benefit is aesthetic: a smaller frame draws less attention away from the picture and can make the display look more expansive. With two or more monitors side by side, narrow bezels can make the gap between images less prominent. Lenovo describes the appeal for multi-window work, and Philips presents its four-sided frameless design as suitable for multi-monitor arrangements. Lenovo’s guide and Philips’ product information illustrate these intended uses.

Technical specifications remain separate

A narrow bezel does not, on its own, establish a monitor’s resolution, panel type, color performance, refresh rate, response time or gaming suitability. Those specifications describe how the display performs; bezel design describes how its front looks. Check each specification independently against your workload rather than treating “borderless” as a performance rating.

How to compare bezel designs

  1. Count the sides. Check whether the description means three-sided or four-sided slim bezels. “Three-sided borderless” does not imply that the bottom edge is equally narrow.
  2. Read the measurement label. If a manufacturer gives a bezel dimension, note exactly what it measures and whether it is reported as an “on” or “off” bezel. Do not assume two brands use identical measurement conventions.
  3. Check the exact model and size. A manufacturer may report different dimensions for different screen sizes, even within one series.
  4. Inspect the dark image edge separately from the casing. The marketing description may refer to the visible frame, while an inactive strip remains between the active image and the outside edge.
  5. Compare the specifications that matter for your use. Review resolution, panel type, refresh rate and stand adjustments separately; the slim-bezel label does not supply those values.

There is no universal bezel-width threshold established by these product descriptions. Treat measurements as model-specific details rather than a standardized score, and compare like with like wherever manufacturers explain their measurement method.

A model-specific measurement example

LG’s BK750-series specification sheet calls the design “three-sided borderless” and lists an “ON Bezel” of 6.5 mm and an “Off Bezel” of 1.3 mm. The sheet says measurements may differ for 22-inch models. The publication date is not stated; the search result indicates it is approximately from 2019. LG BK750-series specification sheet

Specification detail What the cited sheet says How to interpret it
Design description Three-sided borderless The description applies to three sides, not necessarily all four.
“ON Bezel” 6.5 mm A figure for this LG series; not a general definition.
“Off Bezel” 1.3 mm A separate figure as labeled by LG; do not assume it is directly interchangeable with another maker’s measurement.
Size caveat May differ for 22-inch models Confirm the specification for the exact screen size before comparing.

This example shows why the label alone is insufficient: the series specifies a design across three sides, reports two different bezel figures, and includes a size qualification. It does not establish a standard that other monitors must meet.

Is a borderless monitor really borderless?

No. In normal product language, “borderless” means the bezel is minimized and less noticeable, not that the monitor has no physical frame or inactive panel edge. The bezel still has a structural role, and the display may retain a dark strip beyond the active picture.
