A 5-sigma result means that, if the background-only (null) hypothesis were correct, the chance of observing an excess at least this large from random statistical fluctuations is about 2.9 × 10−7—roughly 1 in 3.5 million in the one-sided Gaussian convention used by particle physicists.
That is why five sigma is the traditional threshold for calling a new-particle signal a discovery. It is not, however, a 99.9999% probability that the particle exists, and it is not absolute certainty.
What “sigma” measures
Sigma (σ) is a unit of standard deviation. A standard deviation describes the typical spread of measurements or event counts around an expected value. In particle physics, the number of sigmas expresses how far an observed result lies from what a specified hypothesis predicts.

The hypothesis being tested is usually called the null hypothesis. For a new-particle search, it often says that known processes and detector backgrounds explain the data and that no new signal is present.

The “excess” being tested
Suppose a background model predicts 1,000 events in a mass range, but the detector records more events clustered near one mass. The analysis asks whether that excess is a plausible fluctuation of the 1,000-event background or whether it points to an additional process.
The observed excess is converted into a test statistic and then into a significance, commonly written as Z. A result of Z = 5 is five standard deviations above the background expectation in the relevant direction.
What the 5-sigma probability actually says
The associated probability is a p-value: the probability of obtaining data at least as incompatible with the null hypothesis as the data actually observed, assuming the null model is correct.
For a one-sided standard-normal distribution, Z = 5 corresponds to a tail probability of approximately 2.87 × 10−7, or 2.87 × 10−5%. CERN commonly rounds this to about one chance in 3.5 million. The two descriptions refer to the same scale.
The wording matters. A 5-sigma result does not mean “there is only a one-in-3.5-million chance that the particle is real.” It means “if there were no new particle and the background model were correct, a fluctuation this large or larger would occur about once in 3.5 million comparable trials.”

Why that is not the probability that the null is true
A p-value starts by assuming the null hypothesis and evaluates how surprising the data would be under that assumption. It does not reverse the calculation to give the probability that the null hypothesis itself is true. That reverse probability would require a different statistical framework and explicit prior assumptions about competing explanations.
Consequently, a five-sigma claim can be extremely strong evidence against a background-only model without being a mathematical proof that a particular particle or theory is correct.

Is five sigma the same as 99.9999% certainty?
No. In the one-sided Gaussian model, a 5-sigma tail leaves approximately 0.0000287% of null outcomes at least that extreme, so nearly all null outcomes are less extreme. That calculation describes the behavior of repeated data sets if the null model is true; it is not a posterior probability that the discovery is genuine.
Other sources of uncertainty also remain. Detector calibration, imperfect background simulations, choices about which events to include, and biases in the analysis can affect the estimated significance. These issues are represented through nuisance parameters and systematic-uncertainty models, but a quoted sigma value is still conditional on those modeling choices.
Why particle physics chose a five-sigma discovery threshold
Particle-physics experiments examine enormous event samples and search across many possible masses, decay modes, event categories and analysis choices. With so many opportunities for an unusual fluctuation, a lower threshold would produce more false discovery claims over time.

Five sigma is therefore a community convention intended to make false positives exceptionally rare before a result is labeled a discovery. ATLAS describes five-sigma significance as the traditional requirement for claiming discovery of a new particle. CERN’s educational material likewise notes that particle-physics journals generally accept a discovery claim only after this standard is met.
Evidence versus discovery
A result near three sigma is commonly described as evidence, not a discovery. The distinction is a reporting convention, not a sharp change in the laws of probability. A three-sigma excess can motivate additional data and scrutiny; a five-sigma excess is the level at which the field traditionally permits the word “discovery.”
Meeting the threshold does not remove the need to check the detector, background model and analysis procedure. It means the statistical excess has crossed the agreed discovery-level benchmark under the stated model.
How a particle-physics analysis reaches a sigma value
The exact statistical machinery varies by experiment, but the logic follows a recognizable sequence.
- Define the hypotheses. The null model specifies known backgrounds and detector effects. The alternative model adds a possible signal, such as a particle with a particular mass and decay pattern.
- Build the expected background. Researchers use control samples, simulation and calibration data to estimate how many events and what distributions the background should produce.
- Choose a test statistic. The statistic measures how much better the data fit a signal-plus-background model than the background-only model, while accounting for relevant uncertainties.
- Fit the observed data. The analysis estimates the signal strength and determines how far the observation lies from the background expectation.
- Calculate the tail probability. Under the background-only model, researchers determine how often simulated or mathematically modeled experiments produce a test statistic at least as extreme as the observed one.
- Convert the probability to significance. The tail probability is expressed as an equivalent Gaussian number,
Z. A one-sidedZ = 5corresponds to the five-sigma convention.
The result is not based only on counting events. The calculation can include uncertainties in luminosity, detector efficiency, energy calibration, reconstruction, theoretical cross sections and background shapes. Those contributions can reduce the significance compared with a calculation that treats every input as perfectly known.

Local and global significance: the look-elsewhere effect
A headline may quote a “local” five-sigma significance. Local significance asks how surprising the excess is at one specified location—for example, one particular mass value—assuming that location was selected in advance.
Searches usually scan a range of masses and many event categories. If enough locations are examined, an apparently impressive fluctuation can appear somewhere by chance. A global p-value accounts for the possibility of a fluctuation anywhere in the search region. It is larger than the corresponding local p-value, so the global significance is lower.
This adjustment is known as the look-elsewhere effect. A careful report should state whether its quoted sigma is local or global and should identify the search range and categories included in the correction. Comparing two results is misleading if one uses a local value and the other uses a global value.
What else to check besides the sigma number
Two results with the same nominal significance can have very different evidential strength. Use these questions when reading a paper or news report:

- Which significance is reported? Determine whether it is local or global.
- How much uncertainty is statistical versus systematic? A result dominated by limited event counts may improve quickly with more data; a result dominated by calibration or background-model uncertainties may require methodological work.
- Was one channel or several used? Combining independent decay channels can increase sensitivity, but correlations and shared uncertainties must be modeled correctly.
- Is the result from one experiment or independent experiments? Reproduction with a separate detector and analysis provides an important check against experiment-specific problems.
- Was the signal shape physically appropriate? A genuine particle should produce a pattern in mass, energy, decay products and event rates that agrees with the proposed process, not merely a single excess in one histogram bin.
- Were the analysis choices fixed before examining the signal region? Flexible choices made after seeing an excess can inflate an apparent significance.
The Higgs boson and the 4 July 2012 announcement
The Higgs discovery illustrates how five sigma is used in practice. The Higgs boson decays almost immediately, so detectors do not record the Higgs itself traveling through the apparatus. Instead, ATLAS and CMS identify its decay products and look for an excess over known backgrounds in several channels.

On 4 July 2012, CERN reported that ATLAS and CMS had reached the five-sigma threshold for a new particle consistent with the long-sought Higgs boson. Combining channels and the data from two independent experiments helped the signal cross the discovery benchmark. The independent observations also reduced the chance that an unrecognized detector or analysis problem in one experiment created the excess.
The phrase “consistent with the Higgs boson” was deliberate. The statistical excess established a discovery-level signal, while measurements of the particle’s mass, production rates, spin-related properties and couplings continued to test whether it matched the Standard Model Higgs.
Does five sigma prove a new particle exists?
It provides exceptionally strong evidence for a signal under the analysis assumptions, but it is not absolute certainty. CERN’s educational material explicitly cautions that even a 5-sigma significance does not make scientific knowledge absolutely certain.
A discovery claim is strongest when several forms of support agree:
- The excess reaches the five-sigma convention after appropriate systematic uncertainties and look-elsewhere corrections.
- The excess appears in more than one decay channel or analysis category where the proposed process predicts it.
- Independent data or a separate experiment reproduces the signal.
- The measured mass, rates and other properties fit a coherent physical model.
- Later data continue to show the effect rather than causing the significance to fall as the sample grows.
Five sigma addresses the probability of a background fluctuation in the stated test. The additional checks address whether the signal is robust, correctly modeled and attributable to the proposed physical cause.
How to read a five-sigma claim in a news story
Look for the exact statistical statement rather than treating “five sigma” as a synonym for certainty. A technically responsible report should identify:
- The null hypothesis or background model being tested.
- The observed excess and the measurement region in which it occurred.
- Whether the quoted value is local or global significance.
- How statistical and systematic uncertainties were included.
- Whether multiple channels were combined and how correlations were handled.
- Whether an independent experiment or later data confirmed the effect.
If a story says only that a result is “99.9999% certain,” it may be using an imprecise translation of the Gaussian tail. Ask what probability was calculated, under which null model, and whether the look-elsewhere effect was included.

The practical bottom line
Five sigma is a standardized way to say that a signal is extraordinarily unlikely to arise from a background-only fluctuation—about one chance in 3.5 million for the one-sided Gaussian convention. It is the traditional particle-physics threshold for a discovery claim because experiments search many possible signals and need a stringent false-positive standard. The number is conditional, not a posterior probability or proof: local versus global treatment, systematic uncertainties, analysis choices and independent confirmation all determine how persuasive the result is.
