A 16:9 phone screen is a relatively wide rectangle: in landscape it is 16 units wide and 9 units high; turned upright, it is 9 units wide and 16 units high. The ratio describes shape, not the screen’s diagonal or the handset’s outside dimensions.
To compare sizes accurately, use the diagonal and aspect ratio together, or use the manufacturer’s listed active display width and height. For example, a geometrically calculated 6-inch 16:9 display is about 2.94 inches wide and 5.23 inches high in portrait. A 6-inch display with a taller ratio is narrower and taller, even though its diagonal measures the same.
What 16:9 means on a phone
Aspect ratio is a proportion between two sides. The first number conventionally describes the horizontal side and the second the vertical side when the screen is viewed in landscape. A 16:9 rectangle can therefore be divided into 16 equal units across and 9 equal units down.

A simple visual comparison

Imagine a 16-by-9 index card. A phone panel using that shape is wider in your hand than a tall 20:9 panel of the same diagonal. The corners may be rounded, and the usable pixels near a camera cutout or curved corner may differ, but the underlying rectangle still follows the ratio.
Why the diagonal is not enough
Screen size is usually advertised by diagonal length, measured from one corner of the active display to the opposite corner. That single line does not identify the two side lengths. Different rectangles can have the same diagonal while distributing that length differently between width and height.
A 6-inch 16:9 panel and a 6-inch 20:9 panel both have a 6-inch corner-to-corner measurement. The 16:9 panel is wider; the 20:9 panel is taller and narrower. For reading, typing and one-handed reach, width can matter more than the diagonal. For watching a widescreen film, the ratio determines how much of the panel naturally matches the video frame.
Keep three measurements separate:
- Active display: the illuminated rectangle used for images and touch.
- Handset body: the outside width, height and thickness, including bezels, frame and rounded edges.
- Diagonal: the corner-to-corner display measurement, not the phone’s outside diagonal.
Manufacturers may round diagonal figures, and display corners can remove a small amount of usable area. A calculation from a ratio is therefore a geometric estimate, not a caliper measurement of a particular phone.
Calculate the width and height from a diagonal
For a portrait display whose ratio is 9:16, let d be the diagonal in inches. The 9-by-16 rectangle has a diagonal factor of √(9² + 16²) = √337. The dimensions are:
width = d × 9/√337height = d × 16/√337
The same approach works for any ratio. If a portrait panel is w:h, divide the diagonal by √(w² + h²) to find one proportional unit, then multiply by w and h.

Worked example: a 6-inch 16:9 screen
- Use the portrait ratio, 9:16.
- Calculate the diagonal factor:
√337 ≈ 18.358. - Calculate width:
6 × 9/18.358 ≈ 2.94 inches. - Calculate height:
6 × 16/18.358 ≈ 5.23 inches.
So a 6-inch 16:9 display is approximately 2.94 inches wide by 5.23 inches high in portrait, before accounting for rounded display corners. Those numbers describe the active rectangle, not the phone’s casing.
Convert the result to metric
Multiply inches by 2.54. The same calculated panel is about 7.47 centimeters wide (2.94 × 2.54) and 13.28 centimeters high (5.23 × 2.54). Keep the original precision in mind: a manufacturer’s rounded diagonal can make the final millimeter figures approximate.
Same diagonal, different shape: a numerical comparison
The table below holds the diagonal at 6 inches and changes only the portrait aspect ratio. The dimensions are calculated from the stated ratios, so they illustrate geometry rather than identify measured phone models.

The 16:9 and 20:9 diagonals are equal, but the 20:9 example is roughly 0.48 inch narrower and about 0.25 inch taller. That difference changes thumb reach and the amount of text visible per line. It does not automatically mean one display has more total usable area; area depends on both dimensions and on cutouts and rounded corners.
What current phone specifications show
Google’s official Pixel phone hardware technical specifications list several tall displays. The Pixel 9 series is listed at 20:9, while the Pixel 11 Pro Fold cover display is listed at 19.5:9. In portrait, both are proportionally taller and narrower than 16:9.

These examples illustrate shape, not a complete worldwide inventory of phones. They also do not establish that every phone uses a tall ratio or that native 16:9 phones are unavailable. For a specific model, use its own technical specification rather than inferring dimensions from another phone.

A reliable method for comparing two phones
Use the following procedure whenever two listings appear to have similar screen sizes.
- Confirm what the diagonal measures. Check that both figures refer to the active display and use the same unit. A listing for the phone body or a rounded marketing figure is not interchangeable with an active-panel diagonal.
- Record each aspect ratio. Note whether the manufacturer writes it as 16:9, 9:16, 20:9 or 9:20. Normalize both to portrait or both to landscape before comparing.
- Calculate missing sides. Apply the diagonal formula, or use the manufacturer’s stated active width and height when available. Do not treat a pixel count as an inch measurement.
- Decide which use matters. Compare portrait width for typing and one-handed use; compare landscape height and width for video; compare body dimensions for pocket and grip comfort.
- Check software behavior. Look for the player’s fit, zoom or crop controls and any device-specific per-app compatibility setting.
- Compare like with like. A foldable cover screen, an unfolded inner screen and a conventional slab phone are different display surfaces even when their diagonals happen to match.
Use active dimensions when comfort is the question
If the question is whether a phone feels wide in a hand or fits a pocket, screen geometry is only part of the answer. Read the handset’s body width and height, then account for the frame and bezel. Two phones can have similarly sized active panels but different bodies because of bezel thickness, hinge hardware, camera modules or corner treatment.
Use ratio and diagonal when viewing area is the question
If a specification gives only diagonal and ratio, calculate both sides first. This prevents the common mistake of calling a 6-inch 20:9 display “the same size” as a 6-inch 16:9 display without acknowledging the different shape.

Display ratio, pixels and app layout are different measurements
A physical aspect ratio describes the panel’s geometry. Pixel resolution describes how many addressable picture elements are available, such as a width-by-height pixel count. Logical layout dimensions describe the coordinate space an operating system exposes to an app. None of those measurements is automatically an inch value.
Apple’s Layout guidance for developers reports device dimensions in points and pixels, including devices such as iPhone 16. Points are logical layout units; pixels are display pixels. A developer can use those values to position interface elements, but they should not be converted directly into the physical width of a panel without additional pixel-density and hardware information.
Android makes a similar distinction. The Android Open Source Project’s Android 9 Compatibility Definition Document states:

This is a platform compatibility requirement about the logical area presented to apps, not a rule that every physical phone panel must be 16:9. The document also allows exceptions for applications that declare support for larger ratios. Consequently, a phone can have a tall physical screen while an app receives a constrained or differently scaled logical area.

Most widescreen video is framed at 16:9. On a physical 16:9 display in landscape, the frame can fill the rectangle without a shape mismatch. On a taller phone panel, the player has to choose between preserving the entire frame and filling more of the screen.
- Fit or letterbox: the complete 16:9 image remains visible, with unused display area above and below (or at the sides, depending on orientation).
- Zoom or crop: the image is enlarged to fill more of the panel, which removes some content at the edges.
- Stretch: the image is distorted to match the panel; reputable players generally avoid this unless a user explicitly selects it.
The exact result depends on the video player, the video’s encoded ratio, full-screen mode and the user’s fit or zoom setting. A 16:9 clip may also contain its own cinematic bars, so the visible result can differ from the nominal frame ratio.
Per-app compatibility can be device-specific
The LG G8 ThinQ user guide documents a 19.5:9 display and a per-app Compatibility (16:9) option. Its instructions show that a manufacturer can provide a setting to make an app use a 16:9-compatible area. The guide is evidence for that device, not proof that every Android phone offers the same menu. If an app has clipped controls or an unusual letterbox, check the phone’s display or full-screen settings and the app’s own documentation.
When comparing phones for streaming, test the player controls you actually use. A ratio comparison predicts the available shape, but software decides whether the video is fitted, cropped or constrained.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the diagonal as width
A 6-inch diagonal is not a 6-inch-wide screen. Use the ratio formula or a manufacturer dimension. This is the error that most often makes a tall phone appear larger on paper than it feels across the hand.
Mistake: comparing 16:9 with 20:9 without rotating the ratios
Listings may write ratios in landscape order even when the phone is normally held upright. Convert both to portrait (9:16 versus 9:20) before discussing width and height.
Mistake: confusing pixels or points with inches
Pixel resolution and Apple-style point dimensions describe image or layout coordinates. They require physical pixel density and panel information before they can be translated into inches.

The active panel does not include the frame, bezel, hinge or camera bump. For a case, pocket or one-handed grip, use the handset body measurements.
Mistake: assuming every app fills every pixel
Operating-system compatibility rules, app declarations and player settings can create a logical or letterboxed area that differs from the physical panel. Check the specific app and phone instead of assuming the ratio alone determines the result.

Bottom line for a 16:9 phone screen
In portrait, 16:9 means 9 units wide by 16 units high. A 6-inch example is about 2.94 by 5.23 inches, while a 6-inch 19.5:9 or 20:9 display is narrower and taller. Compare the diagonal with the ratio, verify active width and height when possible, and treat body size, pixel resolution, logical app area and video scaling as separate specifications.
