112 MW is an instantaneous electrical load, not an annual electricity bill. It puts a data center in the same broad class as a major industrial customer. If the facility actually drew 112 MW continuously, it would use about 981.12 GWh (981,120,000 kWh) in a year. That is a conversion of maximum power into energy, not a forecast of what the site will consume.
The crucial qualification is what the 112 MW describes. It may be total facility capacity at the utility meter, or only the power delivered to servers and networking equipment. Utilization, phased construction, redundancy, cooling design and the site’s grid connection determine the load that is ultimately realized.
Start with the unit: MW measures power, not yearly consumption
A megawatt (MW) measures the rate at which electricity is being used at a particular moment. One megawatt equals 1,000 kilowatts, so 112 MW represents 112,000 kW of simultaneous demand. Electricity used over time is measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) or gigawatt-hours (GWh).
To convert a constant load into annual energy, multiply power by the number of hours operated:

112 MW × 8,760 hours per year = 981,120 MWh = 981.12 GWh.
That calculation assumes every part of the 112 MW is available and drawn every hour of a non-leap year. A new campus may energize buildings in stages, run below its design load, or reserve capacity for future expansion, so its metered consumption can be substantially lower.
What the full-load number looks like over different periods
| Operating period | Energy at a constant 112 MW | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 112 MWh | One hour at the stated instantaneous capacity |
| 24 hours | 2,688 MWh (2.688 GWh) | A full day without reducing the load |
| 30 days | 80,640 MWh (80.64 GWh) | A 30-day full-load illustration, not a billing prediction |
| 1 year | 981,120 MWh (981.12 GWh) | 112 MW multiplied by 8,760 hours |
For a more realistic estimate, apply a load factor: average demand divided by the stated capacity. For example, a 60% average load would produce 981.12 GWh × 0.60, or about 588.7 GWh per year. The 60% figure is an illustration; an operator’s actual load factor must come from its operating plan or meter data.

Data-center announcements use “capacity” in different ways. The number may refer to the entire facility’s service capacity, including cooling and electrical losses, or to the IT load available to servers. Those interpretations differ materially.

Ask for the basis, measurement point and time frame before comparing a 112 MW claim with another facility. A utility-service figure and an IT-power figure are not equivalent.
Use PUE to translate between IT and total facility power
Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is defined as total annual data-center energy divided by annual IT-equipment energy. A PUE of 1.0 would mean no overhead; real facilities are higher because they need cooling, power conversion and other support systems. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 guidance cites a 2022 average PUE of 1.55 for large data centers. Uptime Institute reported an industry-average PUE of 1.58 in 2023.
Using a PUE of 1.55 only as an illustration produces two opposite scenarios:

|---|---|---|
| 112 MW is total facility power | IT power = 112 ÷ 1.55 | About 72.3 MW for IT; about 39.7 MW for overhead |
| 112 MW is IT power | Total facility power = 112 × 1.55 | About 173.6 MW at the meter; about 61.6 MW for overhead |
These are arithmetic scenarios, not measurements of a particular site. PUE varies with climate, cooling architecture, redundancy, utilization and operating season, and it is normally reported as an annual metric rather than a single instant.

How much electricity is that compared with homes?
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported average annual electricity consumption of 10,632 kWh per U.S. residential utility customer in 2021 (published in 2023). Dividing the continuous-load result of 981,120,000 kWh by 10,632 kWh gives roughly 92,000 household-equivalents.
This comparison communicates scale, not a literal supply arrangement. Homes have pronounced daily and seasonal peaks and often consume less during many hours. A data center’s demand is comparatively flat, with servers, cooling and power systems operating around the clock. Local household consumption also varies by climate, home size and heating technology, so the EIA average is a national reference rather than a prediction for a particular community.
Where the electricity goes inside the facility
Servers are only one part of a data center’s electrical load. DOE material says roughly 30% to 40% of data-center energy may be required for cooling. That range is a broad industry statement, not a guaranteed share for every 112 MW site.

- IT equipment: servers, storage, network switches and their internal fans.
- Cooling: chillers or other heat-rejection equipment, pumps, fans, cooling towers and controls.
- Power chain: UPS systems, batteries, transformers, switchgear and distribution losses.
- Building and operations: lighting, security, monitoring, fire systems and office or maintenance areas.
- Resilience equipment: generators, fuel systems and transfer equipment, whose standby status and test operation affect consumption.
Cooling is therefore not synonymous with all non-IT power. PUE captures the combined effect of cooling and every other facility overhead item.

How big is a 112 MW data center?
There is no reliable server count, building count or floor-area conversion from 112 MW alone. Server generations, rack densities, storage workloads, cooling technology, redundancy and the definition of capacity can change the physical design dramatically.
A campus can also advertise 112 MW while only a fraction is operating. Developers commonly reserve utility capacity for later buildings, and a utility may approve an interconnection before all phases are built. To understand the physical and operational scale, request these distinctions:
- Nameplate or planned capacity: the design maximum or ultimate campus target.
- Contracted capacity: power reserved in an agreement with a utility or grid operator.
- Energized capacity: substations, feeders and rooms that have actually been commissioned.
- Critical IT load: power intended for computing equipment, separate from facility overhead.
- Average and peak demand: what the site normally draws versus its short-term maximum.
- Build-out schedule: which megawatts belong to the current phase and which are future options.
For example, a site with a 112 MW service limit and a 60% average draw would use about 588.7 GWh annually under the illustrative load-factor calculation, even though its grid connection is sized for 112 MW. That does not reveal how many servers occupy the buildings.

Interconnection and local equipment
A 112 MW customer is large enough to require utility planning rather than an ordinary commercial service connection. Depending on location and voltage, the project may need a dedicated substation, new or upgraded distribution and transmission facilities, protection studies, transformers, switching equipment and a staged energization plan. The exact work cannot be inferred from the MW figure because available network capacity, distance to substations and local rules differ.

Firm power and resilience
Data centers generally seek firm, high-quality power because an interruption can disrupt computing services. Designs may use multiple utility feeds, UPS systems, batteries, standby generators, on-site generation or storage. Those systems improve continuity but add capital equipment, fuel, operating controls and sometimes additional interconnection requirements. A 112 MW headline does not state the redundancy level or how much backup generation can run simultaneously.
Why location matters beyond the site boundary
DOE describes data-center demand as rapidly growing and geographically constrained by latency. Concentrated projects can affect regional generation and transmission planning, especially where several large facilities request service at once. DOE’s December 20, 2024 report states that data centers consumed about 4.4% of total U.S. electricity in 2023 and could consume approximately 6.7% to 12% by 2028. Those are national estimates; they do not assign a particular share to a 112 MW project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to analyze any 112 MW announcement
- Identify the measurement basis. Look for “IT load,” “critical load,” “facility load,” “utility service,” or “total campus capacity.” If the wording is unclear, treat the number as unqualified.
- Separate current from future capacity. Check whether 112 MW is planned, contracted, permitted, energized or already operating.
- Convert power to energy. Multiply the capacity by operating hours, then apply an explicitly stated load factor. At 100% utilization, the annual result is 981.12 GWh.
- Estimate the IT portion with PUE. If only a facility number is known, divide by the stated or assumed PUE. If only IT power is known, multiply by PUE to estimate utility demand. Label the result as an illustration.
- Ask about cooling and climate. Confirm the cooling design, water or air systems, seasonal performance and whether the published PUE is annual, design or peak-condition data.
- Check the grid status. Find the serving utility, interconnection approval, substation work, transmission upgrades, target energization dates and the source of firm and backup power.
How to compare two facilities that each claim 112 MW
Equal headline numbers do not guarantee equal computing capacity, energy use or grid impact. Compare the following items on the same basis:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| IT versus total-facility basis | Does 112 MW describe servers or the utility meter? | The difference can be tens of megawatts after PUE is applied. |
| Contracted versus energized | How much is available now? | Future reservations are not current demand. |
| Utilization or load factor | What average and peak demand are expected? | Annual GWh depends on operating hours and average draw. |
| PUE and cooling design | What annual PUE and cooling method are reported? | Overhead determines how much energy reaches IT. |
| Redundancy and backup | Are there dual feeds, UPS capacity and generators? | Resilience equipment affects infrastructure and operating requirements. |
| Interconnection and power source | What upgrades, voltage level and generation sources are involved? | Grid impact is location-specific, not determined by MW alone. |
Common misreadings to avoid
- “112 MW equals 112 MWh.” MW is a rate; MWh requires a time period.
- “The facility will definitely consume 981.12 GWh every year.” That is the continuous-full-load ceiling implied by the number, not an operating forecast.
- “All 112 MW powers servers.” If the figure is at the meter, cooling and other systems are included.
- “A 112 MW site has a predictable number of GPUs, racks or buildings.” Hardware efficiency and design density vary too widely for that inference.
- “The project automatically needs the same grid upgrades everywhere.” Interconnection work depends on local network conditions, voltage, distance and utility studies.
- “Cooling’s percentage is fixed.” The 30%–40% DOE range is a broad indication; climate and cooling architecture can move the share substantially.
What the number tells you—and what it does not
112 MW tells you that the proposed or available instantaneous electrical capacity is on the order of a major industrial load. Under uninterrupted full-load operation, that capacity corresponds to 981.12 GWh per year and roughly 92,000 average U.S. household-equivalents using the EIA reference. It does not, by itself, tell you the site’s IT capacity, annual consumption, server population, physical size, completion status, PUE, redundancy design or required grid upgrades. Those answers require the facility’s definitions, operating assumptions and interconnection documents.
