A 1000Hz controller polling rate means the controller has a nominal opportunity to report its input state 1,000 times per second—once every 1 millisecond. That 1ms interval is only one part of the input path, however. Controller processing, firmware, the wired or wireless connection, your operating system, the game’s frame timing, rendering, and the display can all add time before an action appears on screen.
What “1000Hz” means on a controller
Hertz (Hz) measures frequency: the number of cycles that occur each second. For a game controller, the polling rate describes how often the device samples its controls and offers an updated input report to the host system.
At 1000Hz, the nominal cycle is calculated as 1,000 milliseconds divided by 1,000 reports, which equals 1 millisecond. In an idealized system, a changed button, trigger, or stick position could therefore wait no longer than about one polling interval for the next report opportunity. The specification does not say that the game will receive, process, render, and display that change within 1ms.

Polling-rate intervals in context
The reciprocal relationship makes common controller settings easy to compare. These are nominal cycle intervals calculated from the stated frequency, not independent laboratory measurements of a particular product.
| Polling rate | Nominal reports per second | Nominal interval between report opportunities |
|---|---|---|
| 125Hz | 125 | 8ms |
| 500Hz | 500 | 2ms |
| 1000Hz | 1,000 | 1ms |
GameSir’s FAQ uses the same frequency-to-interval conversion and cautions that real-world latency also depends on the controller’s microcontroller and firmware. Moving from 125Hz to 1000Hz reduces the nominal polling interval by 7ms; moving from 500Hz to 1000Hz reduces it by 1ms. Those reductions describe the reporting stage only.
Why a 1ms polling interval is not 1ms total input lag
An input has to pass through several stages. Polling rate affects one stage—the schedule for sampling and reporting—but the stages around it determine the end-to-end result you feel.

Switch travel, sensor filtering, and any debounce logic occur before a report is ready.
- Controller processing: The microcontroller scans controls, applies firmware rules, and packages the current state. Firmware can add processing time or alter how frequently reports are generated.
- Report scheduling: At 1000Hz, the nominal schedule provides a report opportunity every 1ms. A change that occurs just after one opportunity may wait for the next one; the rate does not make reports instantaneous.
- Transport: The report travels over the active connection, such as a USB cable, a proprietary 2.4GHz receiver, or Bluetooth. Transport latency and variability differ by implementation and operating conditions.
- Host and input software: The operating system, driver, and game-input layer must receive and hand the state to the game. Software may process updates on its own schedule.
- Game sampling and frame timing: The game reads input during its update loop. If a report arrives after the game has sampled input for a frame, the action may wait for a later frame.
- Rendering and display: The game must render a new frame, the display must scan it, and the panel’s response characteristics determine when the result becomes visible.
Consequently, “1000Hz” should never be rewritten as “1ms input lag.” The accurate statement is that the controller advertises a nominal 1ms polling interval in the applicable mode. SCUF’s manufacturer explainer likewise distinguishes polling frequency from broader input performance.

How polling interacts with frame rate
More frequent reports give the host more opportunities to receive a fresh state between game updates, but the game still presents frames at its own cadence. For reference, a game running at 60 frames per second produces a frame every 16.67ms, 144fps produces one every 6.94ms, and 240fps produces one every 4.17ms. These are frame-period calculations, not guarantees about a particular game or monitor.
A 1000Hz controller can send several reports during one frame at any of those frame rates. That does not force the game to render immediately after each report, nor does it guarantee that every report changes the displayed result. The benefit is an opportunity for the game to see a newer state before a frame boundary; the size of the visible improvement depends on timing throughout the rest of the pipeline.
For this reason, a higher polling setting may matter more in a responsive, high-frame-rate PC setup than in a configuration where the game, display, or connection is the dominant source of delay. The available evidence does not establish that every player will perceive a consistent advantage, so polling rate alone is not a promise of a visibly faster response.
Read the platform and connection qualifier carefully
A manufacturer’s 1000Hz claim can apply to one operating mode rather than to every way the controller can connect. Before treating the number as relevant to your setup, identify the exact model, firmware, platform, and transport named in the specification.

For example, ASUS’s official ROG Raikiri II product information describes up to 1000Hz polling on PC when the controller uses wired USB-C or its 2.4GHz wireless connection. That is a mode-specific manufacturer specification. It should not be generalized to every console, Bluetooth connection, or unlisted operating mode.
When a listing uses phrases such as “up to 1000Hz,” check the conditions attached to the claim:
- Which platform is supported: Windows PC, a specific console, or both?
- Does the rate require wired USB-C, a supplied 2.4GHz receiver, or another connection?
- Is Bluetooth excluded or limited to a lower report rate?
- Is a firmware update or configuration utility required?
- Does the setting persist after changing platforms or reconnecting?
If the documentation does not state a value for a particular mode, treat it as not stated rather than assuming that the highest advertised number applies.
What browser polling tests can and cannot tell you
Online controller tests are useful for checking whether a setup is producing input reports, but a browser result is an observed reading, not a certification of the controller’s raw hardware rate. The browser’s Gamepad API may expose values at the browser or operating system’s own update cadence rather than at every report generated by the device.

The Controller Test explainer warns that what a browser sees can differ from raw controller reporting. A test may therefore show a lower, uneven, or otherwise different rate even when the device is configured for a higher mode. Conversely, a favorable browser number does not prove lower end-to-end latency in a game.
Use browser tests as a troubleshooting clue:
- Keep the connection and USB port consistent while comparing settings.
- Record the selected controller mode and firmware version.
- Repeat the reading rather than relying on one short sample.
- Compare like with like: the same browser, operating system, gamepad API path, and background load.
- Do not present the result as a laboratory measurement of total input latency.
For serious comparisons, use a method capable of observing the device’s actual reports and measure end-to-end response under controlled, repeatable conditions. The collected sources do not provide a standardized independent latency result for all 1000Hz controllers.
How to enable and verify a 1000Hz mode
The exact labels vary by manufacturer, but the following process avoids the most common mistakes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Confirm the exact model. Read the product manual or official specification for the controller revision you own. Similar names can have different platform and connection limits.
- Update firmware. Install the maker’s current firmware using its official utility, if one is provided. Record the version so later tests are repeatable.
- Select a supported connection. Use the mode named in the specification—such as wired USB-C or the supplied 2.4GHz receiver for the PC example above. Do not assume Bluetooth offers the same rate.
- Choose the report-rate setting. In the manufacturer’s configuration utility, look for a control labeled Polling Rate, Report Rate, Response Rate, or a similar term. Select 1000Hz only if the utility exposes it for the active platform and connection.
- Reconnect and verify. Apply the setting, reconnect the cable or receiver, and confirm that the utility still displays the selected value. Some devices revert to a default mode after changing hosts.
- Test in a controlled game session. Keep frame-rate settings, display mode, and connection unchanged while comparing 500Hz and 1000Hz. Look for consistency rather than assuming that a larger number must feel different.
- Investigate symptoms separately. If input drops, stutters, or disconnects, test another USB port or receiver position and return to the documented default rate. A nominally faster mode is not useful if it is unstable.
How to compare two controllers fairly
Polling rate is one comparison axis, not a ranking system. Use a table like the following when evaluating alternatives, and fill each row from the exact product documentation and your own consistent measurements.

| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Polling support | Maximum rate by platform and by wired, 2.4GHz, or Bluetooth mode | The headline value may not apply to your intended setup. |
| Measured end-to-end latency | Result, test equipment or method, and test conditions | Polling frequency alone does not capture processing, transport, game, or display delay. |
| Compatibility | Supported console or PC, game-input software, and required receiver | A high rate is irrelevant if the controller is unsupported where you play. |
| Firmware behavior | Update process, setting persistence, and documented limitations | Reliability and repeatability affect real use. |
| Physical design | Stick and trigger feel, button layout, back controls, cable, and ergonomics | Comfort and control quality can matter more than a 1ms nominal interval. |
| Price and availability | Current listing, included accessories, and regional terms | Specifications and prices can vary by market and date. |
If two controllers have similar measured end-to-end latency, differences in fit, controls, firmware stability, and compatibility may be more consequential than a 500Hz-versus-1000Hz label.
Common misconceptions
“1000Hz means every press reaches the game in 1ms.”
No. It describes the nominal interval between report opportunities. The rest of the input chain can take longer.
“A 1000Hz setting works on every platform.”
Not necessarily. The ASUS ROG example limits the specification to PC wired USB-C and 2.4GHz modes. Always verify the platform and connection named for your exact controller.
“A browser test proves the hardware rate.”
No. Browser-visible Gamepad API updates can differ from raw device reports, so the result should be treated as an observation of that software path.
“The highest polling number is automatically the best controller.”
No. Ergonomics, compatibility, reliable firmware, connection stability, and measured end-to-end latency all belong in the decision.
Bottom line for gamers
Choose a 1000Hz controller mode when your platform and connection genuinely support it and you want the shortest nominal report interval available among otherwise comparable options. Interpret the specification precisely: it means up to 1,000 report opportunities per second, or a 1ms polling interval—not a guarantee of 1ms total input latency or a universally perceptible improvement. Verify the mode, firmware, and transport, then judge the controller by stable real-world performance and the qualities that affect how you actually play.
