If you have seen people say “6-7” on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or in basketball clips, the short answer is: it usually does not have a precise meaning. It is pronounced “six-seven,” not “sixty-seven,” and is used as a deliberately vague interjection, inside joke, or hype phrase.
The trend grew from Skrilla’s song Doot Doot (6 7), then became closely associated with basketball edits featuring LaMelo Ball. A familiar hand gesture—both palms facing upward and moving in a loose up-and-down motion—often accompanies the phrase.
What does “6-7” mean on TikTok?
On TikTok, “6-7” generally means whatever the speaker wants it to mean—or nothing specific at all. Someone might say it after hearing the number six or seven, interrupt a conversation with it, or use it to show that they recognize the meme.
That lack of a fixed definition is part of the joke. The phrase works as a recognizable signal between people who have seen the same videos. It is similar to many internet catchphrases whose appeal comes less from their dictionary meaning and more from knowing when and how to repeat them.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How is it pronounced? | “Six-seven,” with a short pause or hyphenated rhythm—not “sixty-seven.” |
| Does it have one official meaning? | No. It is usually an intentionally nonsensical interjection. |
| Where did it come from? | Skrilla’s song Doot Doot (6 7), released in December 2024. |
| Why is LaMelo Ball involved? | He is listed at 6 feet 7 inches tall, which made him a natural subject for the meme’s basketball edits. |
Where did the 6-7 meme come from?
The phrase comes from Philadelphia rapper Skrilla’s track Doot Doot (6 7). The repeated “6-7” lyric became a popular sound on TikTok and Instagram Reels in early 2025.
The first major format was often a bait-and-switch basketball edit. A clip would set up somebody saying “six-seven,” then cut to footage of LaMelo Ball making a play. The joke depended on Ball’s listed height: 6 feet 7 inches.
That connection helped the sound spread, but it is important to separate the two origins:
- The phrase itself came from Skrilla’s song.
- The LaMelo Ball connection came from creators matching the numbers with his height.
- The hand gesture and schoolyard usage developed as people copied and adapted the online trend.
Why does the meme include a hand gesture?
The usual gesture involves raising and lowering both hands, palms facing upward, in a loose seesaw motion. It is not a formal sign-language definition or a universally agreed translation. Users adopted it because it makes the phrase more visible and gives videos a recognizable movement to copy.

Some people interpret the motion as “so-so,” “in between,” or “mid”—as if the hands are weighing two options. That interpretation fits the gesture, but it is not an established meaning of “6-7.” In practice, the movement is part of the meme’s presentation rather than a reliable explanation of the words.
How did LaMelo Ball become part of the trend?
LaMelo Ball’s listed height made him an obvious target for “6-7” edits. Creators synchronized the lyric or a spoken “six-seven” with basketball highlights, turning an otherwise arbitrary number sequence into a visual punchline.
As the format became familiar, the meme moved beyond Ball. Basketball players, sports creators, students, and children began saying “6-7” directly into the camera. Some clips were designed to become the opening footage for another edit, creating a loop in which people repeated the phrase because they expected someone else to remix it.

The nickname describes an internet moment rather than a separate origin for the meme. The song came first; the child’s video helped make the phrase more visible and easy for other people to imitate.
Does “6-7” refer to 67th Street?
There may be a personal or neighborhood reference behind the numbers, but this should not be presented as a confirmed universal definition of the meme.
Skrilla has connected the number with 67th Street in Philadelphia, where friends of his lived. Other explanations have linked it to Chicago, family connections, police codes, or unrelated street references. These claims vary and remain ambiguous or speculative.
The safest distinction is:
- The song may have a personal meaning for Skrilla or refer to a particular place.
- The viral TikTok phrase has taken on a separate life.
- Most people using “6-7” online are not making a specific claim about a street, city, or code.
Common wrong explanations
Several explanations circulate because people naturally try to assign a clear definition to a phrase that is intentionally vague.

| “6-7” means LaMelo Ball. | Ball helped popularize the meme through his 6-foot-7 height, but the phrase originated in Skrilla’s song. |
| It is pronounced “sixty-seven.” | The meme uses “six-seven.” |
| It always means “so-so” or “mid.” | That is one interpretation of the hand motion, not a confirmed definition. |
| It definitely refers to 67th Street. | A street reference may be part of the song’s background, but it is not the fixed meaning of the viral catchphrase. |
| It began as a children’s hand gesture. | The song and online edits came first. The gesture and children’s use developed later. |
Why did the 6-7 meme become so popular?
The trend has several characteristics that make short-form memes spread easily:
- It is short: two numbers can be repeated and recognized immediately.
- It has a distinctive sound: the delivery from the song gives the phrase a memorable rhythm.
- It supports visual editing: basketball footage provides an obvious cut point and punchline.
- It is easy to copy: anyone can say the phrase and perform the hand motion without special equipment.
- It rewards insider knowledge: understanding that the phrase is not meant to be explained is part of participating in the joke.
Dictionary.com selected “67” as its 2025 Word of the Year, citing the term’s widespread use and deliberately indefinable quality. That choice reflects the unusual nature of the trend: its popularity comes partly from resisting a clean definition.

Context still matters. If the video is a basketball edit, the numbers may be setting up a LaMelo Ball reference. If someone says it after hearing “six” or “seven,” they are probably using it as a random meme interruption. If the clip includes the palms-up motion, it is likely copying the standard format.
Do not assume the phrase is being used as a literal number, a measurement, or a coded reference. In most TikTok usage, it is closer to an interjection such as a deliberately meaningless “catchphrase” than to ordinary slang with a stable definition.
