1,650 lux (lx) means that 1,650 lumens of visible light are arriving on each square metre of a measured surface. It is an illuminance reading, not a lamp’s total lumen output or a universal brightness setting. The number only has meaning when you know where the sensor was placed, its orientation, the distance from the source and the measurement conditions.
For reading, most cited guidance is lower: approximately 300–500 lx at a desk, 320–400 lx for routine reading and writing, at least 500 lx on a document in a specific Canadian workplace case, and about 600 lx for difficult work such as proofreading. Whether 1,650 lx is useful, excessive or simply irrelevant depends on the page, the task and the surrounding light.
What lux measures
Lux measures illuminance: the amount of light arriving on a surface per unit area. The Austrian Federal Office of Metrology (BEV) defines one lux as one lumen per square metre of incident light. A page, tabletop or workbench can be measured because it receives light; a lamp itself is not described completely by a lux value. BEV’s explanation is available at the agency’s illuminance guide.

- Lux (lx): light arriving at a particular surface.
- Lumens (lm): the total visible-light output of a source.
- Candela (cd): luminous intensity in a particular direction.
A lamp can produce many lumens but deliver relatively few lux to your book if it is far away, poorly aimed or heavily shaded. Conversely, a modest lamp can create a high lux reading on a small nearby area.
What a reading of 1,650 lux tells you
A 1,650-lx result says that the measured surface received that illuminance at the instant and location of measurement. It does not, by itself, tell you:
- how bright the entire room appears;
- how much light the fixture emits in total;
- whether the page has glare or distracting reflections;
- what colour temperature or colour rendering the light has; or
- whether the same value occurs elsewhere on the desk.
Distance is especially important. In the simple point-source relationship described by BEV, illuminance decreases with the square of distance. Moving a light twice as far away can therefore reduce the illuminance to roughly one quarter under comparable conditions. Real fixtures are not perfect point sources, and optics, diffusion, reflections and the source’s size affect the result, but the distance warning remains practical: never compare two lux figures without checking their measurement distances.

An official product example
As an illustration of measurement context—not as a reading-light recommendation—the manufacturer specification for the INFINIBAR PB12 lists 1,650 lx at 0.5 metres and 6,500 K, but 607 lx at 1.0 metre at the same colour temperature. Those figures are product photometry for a video light. They do not establish the source of the 1,650-lx value in this article’s title. How much light is appropriate for reading?
There is no single reading threshold that applies to every person, page and environment. The most useful benchmarks are tied to a task and a jurisdiction.

At 1,650 lx, a page is receiving considerably more light than the cited desk, routine-reading and proofreading benchmarks. That does not automatically make it unsafe, but it may be unnecessary for ordinary reading and can create problems if the extra light comes with glare, harsh contrast or eye-level brightness.

Illuminance changes across a room. The page directly under a task lamp may measure hundreds or thousands of lux while the keyboard, a nearby shelf and the far side of the desk receive much less. Direction matters too: a sensor pointed toward a lamp, laid flat on the page or held vertically at a monitor will produce different results because each position represents a different surface and viewing geometry.
Ambient daylight, wall reflectance, blinds, lamp shades and nearby fixtures also change the reading. A page beside a bright window may receive strong horizontal daylight even when the ceiling light is unchanged. For that reason, a number copied from a lamp box or measured in an empty part of the room cannot prove how much light reaches your text.

How to measure illuminance on the page
If you need a precise check—for example, when balancing several workstations—measure at the reading surface rather than at the lamp or wall.
- Choose the document position. Put the book, paper or tablet where you normally read it, on the desk or an easel.
- Set the lighting as used. Turn on the task lamp, room lights and relevant daylight conditions. If you read at night, measure at night; if you read beside a window, include the normal blinds position.
- Place the sensor on the document plane. Canadian federal guidance describes laying the meter on the document, whether the document is on a desk or easel, to assess document illuminance.
- Keep the meter from shading the page. Position your hand and body so they do not block the lamp or cast a shadow over the sensor.
- Record several points. Check the centre, top, bottom and reading area where your eyes spend most of their time. Note the lowest and highest values rather than relying on one spot.
- Repeat after adjustments. Recheck when you move the lamp, change its brightness, close blinds or alter the page angle.
A phone light-meter app can indicate trends but may not match a calibrated lux meter, especially across different phone cameras and spectral conditions. For ordinary home reading, you do not need to buy a meter simply because a lamp lacks a lux label. The practical goal is even, comfortable light on the words.

Lower the level for ordinary text when possible
If your page measures around 1,650 lx and the task is ordinary novel, newspaper or general office reading, try reducing the lamp output or increasing its distance while keeping the page evenly lit. The cited routine-reading range of 320–400 lx and desk range of 300–500 lx provide useful starting points, not mandatory settings. A dimmer or adjustable arm lets you make a small change and reassess comfort.

Reserve higher levels for demanding detail
Fine print, proofreading, maps, technical drawings and low-contrast documents can require more light. WorkSafe Victoria lists 600 lx for proofreading, while HSE gives 750 lx as an engineering-drawing example. Those figures show why a detailed task may justify more illumination than casual reading, but they still do not turn 1,650 lx into a default target.
Control reflections and contrast
Glare can make a bright page harder to read. Aim a desk lamp from the side rather than directly into your eyes or straight back from glossy paper. Tilt the page or screen until reflections move away from your line of sight. Keep the surrounding area from being dramatically darker than the page; a very bright rectangle in a dark room can feel more uncomfortable than a lower, balanced level.
Use local control for different readers
People sharing a room may have different tasks or visual needs. HSE states that different activities require different lighting levels and notes that local lighting control may be needed when people perform different activities. An adjustable task lamp lets one reader choose more light without flooding the whole room.

Is 1,650 lux too bright for reading?
It is above the common desk and routine-reading figures cited here, so it is often more than necessary for standard text. “Too bright” cannot be decided from the number alone, however. The answer depends on glare, contrast, exposure time, page reflectance, the reader’s vision and whether the measurement was taken exactly where the eyes are working. If the light causes squinting, reflections, headaches or rapid fatigue, reduce or redirect it. If text remains difficult to resolve because it is tiny or low contrast, improve the light’s evenness and the document’s contrast before simply increasing the lux again.
Practical setup for a comfortable reading desk
- Start with a broadly even desk level in the 300–500-lx range suggested by BEV, then adjust for the task and the reader.
- Place the lamp to the side opposite your writing hand when possible, reducing shadows cast across the page.
- Keep the shade below eye level and aim the beam at the document, not at your face.
- Combine task lighting with moderate ambient light so the page is not an isolated bright patch.
- For proofreading or technical detail, increase light gradually and check for reflections at the actual reading angle.
- Measure the page if you need a number; do not infer document illuminance from the lamp’s lumen rating.
The bottom line on 1,650 lux
1,650 lux is a high illuminance reading relative to the 300–500 lx desk guidance and the 320–400 lx routine-reading guidance cited by the authorities above. It may be appropriate for a demanding, finely detailed task or a particular high-output fixture, but it is not a universal reading requirement. Treat it as a location-specific measurement. For everyday reading, aim for even light on the page, control glare and use an adjustable local source so the level can match the task rather than chasing one headline number.
