There is no universal document checklist for an international bank transfer. Depending on the bank, countries, route, payment amount, customer profile and risk review, a bank may ask you to confirm your identity, provide beneficiary and bank details, explain the payment’s purpose, or show where the money came from. If your bank has contacted you, its specific request—not a general checklist—determines what to send.
What documents might a bank ask you to provide?
A request can involve several different kinds of information. Keep them distinct: identity documents verify who is involved; beneficiary details help route the payment; a purpose explanation describes why it is being sent; and source-of-funds evidence supports where the particular money originated. One category does not automatically satisfy another.
Identity and customer details
A bank may ask for identity information about the person initiating or receiving a transfer. The accepted evidence and verification rules depend on the jurisdiction and provider. In the UK, GOV.UK lists a passport, photocard driving licence or government-issued documents as examples of independent verification evidence for covered payment-service-provider transfers (GOV.UK guidance on transfer-of-funds information).

For instance, Canada’s FINTRAC guidance says financial entities must verify the identity of a person requesting initiation of an international electronic funds transfer (EFT) of CAD 1,000 or more, and the beneficiary receiving such a transfer, under the specified rules (FINTRAC identity-verification guidance). This is a Canadian identity-verification rule for specified participants, not a global source-of-funds threshold.

Beneficiary and receiving-bank details
Be prepared to provide or confirm the beneficiary’s name and account identifier, along with the receiving bank details required for the destination. Depending on the payment route, a form may ask for an account number or IBAN, the receiving bank’s name, a SWIFT/BIC code, and bank or beneficiary addresses. Those are examples of fields on one bank’s outgoing international wire form, not a list of items every bank or corridor requires (River City Bank international wire form, updated July 2025).
Use the details and format requested by your bank. If you are unsure whether a field refers to the beneficiary or the receiving bank, ask before submitting: an incorrect or incomplete payment detail can cause processing problems independent of any document review.
Purpose of payment
A bank can ask why you are sending the money. One example, the River City Bank form, has a “PURPOSE of Payment” field and a separate reference field. Depending on the transfer, a clear explanation might identify a payment for goods or services, a family gift, or the purchase of an asset. The bank decides what explanation and supporting records it will accept.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a business payment, an invoice number or account reference may help identify which transaction the transfer relates to. A purpose field and a reference field do different jobs: one describes why the payment is being made, while the other can help connect it to an invoice or other transaction reference. These fields are examples from one bank’s form, not a universal format.
Source of funds for this transfer
Source of funds (SOF) means the origin of the money used in a particular transaction. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) gives examples such as employment savings, an inheritance, a gift, proceeds from selling an asset, dividends, investments and pension income. HMRC’s definition is: “Source of funds (SOF) means the origins of the money used in a particular transaction” (HMRC Economic Crime Supervision Handbook, section ECSH33358).

Possible supporting records depend on the explanation you give. They can include bank statements, payslips or an employment contract, paperwork confirming a property or share sale, estate accounts for an inheritance, or records supporting a gift or investment return. A bank statement can show that funds are in an account and trace movement, but it may not explain how the money was acquired. HMRC’s 2026 anti-money-laundering guidance says, “It is not enough to know the money came from a UK bank account” (HMRC source-of-funds and source-of-wealth guidance, section AMLG11630).
A useful way to prepare is to connect your explanation to records that support both origin and movement. For example, if you say the transfer is funded by salary savings, payslips can support the employment explanation while statements can show salary deposits and the funds’ path to the sending account. If the money came from a sale, sale paperwork can explain the origin and a matching deposit can help show the proceeds arriving. These are practical examples, not combinations every bank universally requires.

The key question is not simply whether a document shows money in an account, but whether the records make sense alongside the source you describe. If several steps separate the original source from the account funding the transfer, relevant statements may help show the movement between accounts. Ask your bank what it needs if you are unsure which records explain the particular funds under review; do not assume that one statement or one type of proof will meet every bank’s request.
Source of wealth is a different question
Source of wealth (SOW) describes how a customer accumulated their overall assets, rather than where the money for one transfer came from. If a broader wealth check is relevant, examples of records may include audited accounts, share registers, property and investment records, estate accounts, or employment records. This is not a routine requirement for every transfer: HMRC describes such checks as dependent on due diligence and risk circumstances (HMRC source-of-funds and source-of-wealth guidance).
In practice, a source-of-funds question is about the particular payment being reviewed; a source-of-wealth question looks at the wider story of how assets were built up. A bank may ask about one, the other, or both depending on its due diligence and risk assessment. Treating them as interchangeable can lead to a response that does not address what the bank actually asked.

Business payments
For a business transfer, the bank may want to understand both the commercial purpose and how the payment relates to the underlying transaction. An invoice number or account reference can help identify it; the River City Bank form, for example, gives an invoice number as a beneficiary-reference example. Depending on the case, an invoice, contract or business accounts may help substantiate the explanation. The available guidance does not establish that any one of these records is required for every business transfer.
Why would a bank ask for more information?
Financial institutions may conduct source-of-funds checks as part of ongoing monitoring when needed to assess whether a transaction fits what they know about the customer, the customer’s business and the risk profile. A transfer funded from an account that is not in the customer’s name, or activity that differs from an expected pattern, can lead to additional questions (HMRC guidance on source of funds and source of wealth).
A higher-value transfer or a particular destination can also prompt a provider to request more information, but no single amount guarantees the same document request at every institution. The CAD 1,000 figure in FINTRAC’s guidance is specifically about identity verification for certain Canadian international EFT participants; it does not mean every bank must request source-of-funds documents at that amount. Similarly, GOV.UK describes a €1,000 verification condition for covered payment-service-provider transfers. Its applicability depends on the governing rules and circumstances; it is not a worldwide review trigger (GOV.UK transfer-of-funds guidance).
These figures describe particular regulatory requirements, not a prevalence statistic or a universal threshold for document reviews. The amount, destination or route alone does not guarantee that a bank will ask for a certain record. Requirements can vary with the institution, sending and receiving countries, customer profile and the bank’s assessment of the transaction. A bank’s own checklist is the best guide to what it needs in an individual case.
How to respond when your bank contacts you
- Ask for the exact request. Confirm which documents or details are needed, the date range, accepted file types, any translation requirements, and how to submit them securely. These details are set by the bank; there is no universal rule for them.
- Explain the purpose and origin plainly. Give a concise, truthful account of why you are sending the transfer and how the money was acquired. Avoid vague descriptions if the bank has asked about a specific source.
- Choose records that fit the explanation. Use evidence relevant to the source you describe—for example, employment records for salary savings, sale paperwork for asset proceeds, inheritance documentation for an estate distribution, or relevant account statements to show movement.
- Check the information for consistency. Compare names, dates, amounts and account details across your explanation and documents. If a difference has a legitimate reason, explain it rather than altering a record.
- Clarify unclear requests through a known channel. If the request is unusually broad or you do not understand what issue the bank is checking, contact it using an official phone number, secure banking app or website you already trust. Ask what specific point the documents need to establish.
Send accurate, relevant records only through a submission method confirmed by the bank. Do not create or change documents to fit a requested explanation. A complete response may help the bank assess the case, but no particular document guarantees approval or a specific release date.

If the bank has asked for something you do not recognize, or its request seems broader than expected, do not guess at what will satisfy it. Ask the bank to clarify which point it is trying to verify and whether the requested material should relate to the transfer’s purpose, the source of the money, or your wider source of wealth. A direct clarification can help you avoid sending irrelevant records while still responding accurately.
Which records fit common explanations?
| Explanation for the money | Records that may help support it | What they can clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Employment savings | Payslips or an employment contract, plus relevant bank statements | Employment income and, where shown, the movement of salary deposits into the funds being transferred |
| Sale of property or shares | Documents confirming the sale, plus a statement showing the proceeds arriving | The transaction that generated the funds and their subsequent path |
| Inheritance | Estate accounts or other inheritance records, plus relevant statements | The source of the inherited funds and their movement |
| Gift | Records supporting the gift, if available and requested, plus relevant statements | The stated origin and receipt of the gifted money |
| Dividends, investments or pension income | Records of the relevant investment return or pension income, plus relevant statements | The income or return described and, where shown, its receipt into the account |
| Business transaction | An invoice, contract or business accounts, as relevant to the transaction | The commercial purpose and connection to the underlying transaction |
These are examples drawn from HMRC’s source-of-funds guidance and one bank’s wire form; the bank reviewing your transfer decides what is relevant and sufficient (HMRC source-of-funds guidance; River City Bank form).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a general checklist cannot tell you
A list of common records can help you prepare, but it cannot predict the decision in an individual case. Requirements vary by institution, country, transfer route, amount and customer circumstances. Supervisory guidance from HMRC explains concepts and risk-based checks; it is not a binding checklist for every customer or bank. FINTRAC’s threshold applies in Canada to specified identity verification, while the GOV.UK guidance describes a UK regulatory framework for covered payment-service providers. Check with your bank for the current request and applicable process.
For context, banks and other transfer providers can differ in cost and exchange rate, the amount the recipient receives, estimated delivery time, supported destinations and currencies, customer service, and verification processes. Comparing those factors does not make a legitimate review avoidable: any provider may carry out checks under its applicable rules and procedures. A provider’s document process is one comparison point, not a way to bypass a legitimate review.
Frequently Asked Questions
What documents do I need for an international bank transfer?
There is no single list for every transfer. A bank may ask for identity and customer details, beneficiary and receiving-bank information, the payment purpose, or records supporting the source of funds. The sending and receiving countries, route, amount, customer profile and risk review can affect the request, so follow the bank’s own checklist.

Why is my bank asking for proof of source of funds?
A bank may use source-of-funds checks as part of ongoing monitoring to assess whether a transaction fits what it knows about the customer, business and risk profile. A payment funded from an account not in your name or activity that differs from an expected pattern can prompt questions. Ask what specific point the bank needs to verify.
Is a bank statement enough to prove where the money came from?
Not necessarily. A statement can show that funds are in an account and trace their movement, but it may not explain how they were acquired. Depending on the source you describe, supporting records might include payslips or an employment contract, sale paperwork, estate accounts, or records of a gift or investment return. The bank decides what is relevant and sufficient.
What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?
Source of funds concerns the origin of the money used in a particular transaction. Source of wealth concerns how a customer accumulated their overall assets. A broader wealth check is not a routine requirement for every transfer and depends on due diligence and risk circumstances.
Does a transfer of CAD 1,000 or €1,000 automatically require source-of-funds documents?
No universal source-of-funds trigger is established by those figures. FINTRAC’s CAD 1,000 threshold relates to specified identity verification for certain international EFT participants in Canada. GOV.UK describes a €1,000 verification condition for covered payment-service-provider transfers. Neither should be treated as a worldwide source-of-funds document threshold; check the rules and request that apply to your bank and transfer.
Can I use a different transfer provider to avoid a document review?
Do not assume that another provider can avoid legitimate checks. Providers can differ in cost, exchange rate, recipient amount, delivery estimates, destinations, service and verification processes, but any provider may carry out checks under its applicable rules and procedures.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Banks may ask for identity, payment details, purpose information or evidence explaining the origin and movement of transfer funds, but there is no universal checklist or trigger amount. Give a truthful explanation, provide relevant records through the bank’s confirmed secure channel, and ask for clarification if the request is unclear.
