To start racing in iRacing, you need a compatible Windows PC and an active membership; a steering wheel is optional. The subscription includes a collection of cars and tracks, while some additional content is licensed separately. Before signing up, check your PC against the current requirements and decide whether you are comfortable with the recurring membership and any optional equipment or content.
What iRacing is—and how access works
iRacing is a PC racing simulator built around licensed cars and tracks, online competition, and continuing service updates. Access is membership-based, rather than a one-time purchase of the entire service. Check iRacing’s membership page for current durations, offers, and renewal terms; introductory discounts can change, so do not assume an advertised new-member price will apply at renewal. iRacing says auto-renew can be turned off in the account section.
What is included, and what may cost extra?
iRacing’s membership materials list 32 included cars and 29 included tracks, and say the content needed for official rookie-class races is included. These are iRacing’s published counts, not an independent inventory; check the included-content page for the current catalogue. Additional cars and tracks can be licensed separately, so the cost of pursuing a particular series may go beyond membership.

Can you play with a gamepad, or do you need a wheel?
You do not need to buy a wheel to begin. iRacing lists gamepads and other input methods—including joysticks, mouse-based controls, and supported touchscreen driving—as compatible. It recommends a steering wheel and pedals, particularly a force-feedback setup, for the most intense racing experience. That makes a wheel an immersion and control choice, not a prerequisite for membership.
If you are deciding what to buy, start with the controller you already own and consider a wheel-and-pedal set only if you want that style of driving. iRacing’s requirements and supported-controls page does not establish that any particular wheel model is necessary.

Does your PC meet the current requirements?
iRacing’s current requirements page lists Windows 11 64-bit. It says Windows 10 support ended in October 2025 and recommends upgrading. The requirements below are the tiers published by iRacing, not a guarantee of identical performance on every system:

The page also says macOS, Linux, and virtual machines are unsupported. It lists VR as supported and calls for at least the recommended PC tier for VR. Check the live system-requirements page before subscribing or upgrading, since software requirements can change.

How to decide whether iRacing fits your setup
- Check the PC first: Confirm your Windows version, processor, graphics memory, RAM, and available internal storage against iRacing’s current requirements.
- Budget for the membership: Compare the current subscription options and renewal terms on the membership page rather than treating a temporary offer as the permanent price.
- Choose a control method: A compatible controller is enough to start; a force-feedback wheel and pedals are optional if you want the recommended, more immersive setup.
- Look at the racing you want: The included collection covers official rookie-class races, but other cars and tracks may require separate licenses. Official series also use license levels and Safety Rating for eligibility.
- Consider VR separately: VR is supported, but iRacing calls for at least its recommended PC tier. Do not assume a system that only meets minimum requirements is sufficient for VR.
iRacing describes its community as more than 350,000 racers; that figure is the company’s claim, not an independently audited count. The service’s core appeal is organized online racing with a progression system, but whether it is a good fit depends on your PC, preferred controls, and willingness to pay for membership and any content beyond the included collection.
