You can buy a Linux virtual private server (VPS) and install Claude Code yourself; the hosting purchase does not include Claude Code access or model usage. Anthropic says Claude Code runs in a terminal on the development machine and connects directly to model APIs, so the VPS is a remote workspace—not a special backend server.

What to buy for Claude Code

Choose a Linux VPS or cloud virtual machine whose image and architecture meet Anthropic’s current requirements. Its published setup documentation lists Ubuntu 20.04 or later, Debian 10 or later, at least 4 GB of RAM, an internet connection, and availability in an Anthropic-supported country. The 4 GB figure is a minimum, not a recommended size for every project. Check the live Claude Code setup guide and the provider’s available images before ordering.

How much capacity you need beyond that minimum depends on your repository, builds, concurrent tools, and how much work you want to keep running on the machine. The sources do not establish a Claude Code-specific server benchmark or a universally best VPS size.

Compare the details that affect your bill and workflow

  • Operating system and architecture: Confirm the provider offers an image compatible with Anthropic’s current setup requirements.
  • CPU and memory: Compare shared and dedicated CPU options, RAM, and storage against your development workload.
  • Location and networking: Consider server location, latency, public-IP charges, included transfer, and whether the instance can reach the services you need.
  • Billing: Check hourly and monthly rates, monthly caps, and whether a powered-off machine is still billed.
  • Persistence and support: Review backup or snapshot options and the provider’s support terms if you need to preserve a long-running workspace.

Examples of Linux VPS providers

DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux virtual machines and lists shared and dedicated CPU configurations and images including Ubuntu and Debian. Its VPS page advertised shared CPU hosting from $4 per month when accessed in 2026; pricing and availability can change, so verify the current amount on its Droplet pricing page before buying. This is a provider-listed starting price, not a Claude Code-tested configuration.

Hetzner offers cloud virtual machines with Linux images including Ubuntu and Debian, and distinguishes shared resources from dedicated CPU options. Its cost-optimized plans are presented for uses such as testing and development. Hetzner says created servers continue to incur charges until deleted, even when powered off. Review its Cloud server information and plan details for current options and billing terms. These provider pages document general virtual-machine offerings, not Claude Code benchmarks.

How to install Claude Code on a VPS

Provision the machine, connect to its Linux shell, and follow Anthropic’s current Linux setup instructions. Installation and account authentication are separate: installing the command-line tool does not itself grant model access.

  1. Choose and create the server. Select a Linux image that meets the current requirements in Anthropic’s setup guide. Check the provider’s supported image architecture and region before provisioning.
  2. Set up remote access. Use the connection method provided by your hosting provider to reach the server’s shell. Secure access is important, but the provider product pages cited here are not a server-hardening guide; consult the provider’s current security documentation for that work.
  3. Install Claude Code. In the remote shell, use one of the Linux installation methods currently listed in Anthropic’s setup guide. Anthropic documents a native installer and an npm method; the npm method requires Node.js 18 or later. Anthropic warns against running sudo npm install -g because of permission and security risks. Use the live guide for the exact current command rather than relying on a copied installer command.
  4. Check the installation. Anthropic documents claude doctor as an installation check. Run the verification command shown in the current setup guide.
  5. Open your project and start a session. Change to the project directory in the server shell before starting Claude Code, so it works in the intended codebase.
  6. Authenticate for model access. Follow Anthropic’s current sign-in flow for your eligible account or enterprise provider. Console access requires active billing; a supported Claude plan or enterprise platform may also provide access, subject to its eligibility and terms.

Account charges and remote sign-in are separate considerations

Your VPS invoice covers the virtual machine; it does not automatically pay for Claude Code model access. Anthropic’s documented authentication options include Console, eligible Claude plans, and enterprise platforms. Console use requires active billing, and account eligibility and model charges are separate from hosting costs. Confirm the applicable terms with Anthropic before use.

When connecting over SSH, browser-based sign-in callbacks can be problematic: Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance notes that localhost callbacks may fail over remote SSH, in devcontainers, or behind strict firewalls. If sign-in does not complete, use Anthropic’s current instructions for remote environments rather than assuming a local browser callback will work. See the Claude Code troubleshooting guide for current guidance.
