You do not need a complete new office to work productively from home. Start with a stable work surface, a chair that supports you, and a screen, keyboard, and pointing device that can be positioned comfortably. Arrange what you already own, then buy only the item that fixes a specific problem.
The right arrangement is personal. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states that “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” Its guidance is intended to help identify and reduce workstation problems, not to certify a particular product or guarantee productivity or injury prevention.
The practical essentials
A productive home workstation has five functional requirements:
- A stable surface: It must hold the display, keyboard, and pointing device while leaving enough depth to keep the screen at a comfortable distance.
- A supportive, adjustable-enough chair: Your back, legs, buttocks, and arms should be supported, with feet firmly supported by the floor or an appropriate footrest.
- A readable, centered display: The screen should be directly in front of you, positioned low enough that its top line is no higher than eye level.
- Input devices in reach: The keyboard and mouse or other pointing device should be close together, near your body, and usable without raised shoulders or bent wrists.
- Manageable lighting: Glare and reflections should be controlled before you spend money on a new monitor or filter.
These are fit and layout requirements, not a universal shopping list. A dining table, an existing office chair, and a laptop can be adequate if they can be arranged to meet them. If they cannot, purchase the smallest change that resolves the mismatch.

Set up what you have before buying anything
Adjust the components together rather than optimizing one item in isolation. Use this sequence to expose the actual problem:
- Choose the work location. Select a stable surface with enough depth for the display to sit at least 20 inches from your eyes and enough usable area for the keyboard and pointing device. Keep frequently used items in the primary work zone, and check that your legs can move freely underneath.
- Set the chair. Adjust the seat and back so your back is supported and your feet rest firmly. If the desk is fixed and your feet cannot reach the floor while the keyboard remains at a workable height, note that mismatch rather than forcing your posture.
- Place the display. Center it directly in front of your body. Set the top line of text at or below eye level, then move the display until reading does not require leaning forward.
- Position the keyboard and pointing device. Keep them close together and near the front of the work surface. Adjust the chair or surface so your elbows are approximately level with the keyboard, your shoulders stay relaxed, and your wrists are not bent up, down, or sideways.
- Check the light. Look for reflections from windows and lamps while the screen shows a typical document. Rotate the display or relocate the desk before adding accessories.
- Test a normal work period. Use the arrangement for a realistic task, changing one variable at a time. A specific discomfort or reach problem tells you what to fix; a vague desire for a more expensive setup does not.
OSHA’s guidance emphasizes changing posture and component positions to fit the individual and the task. A setup that works for a short email session may need different adjustments for several hours of typing or detailed visual work.

OSHA describes a well-designed, adjusted chair as an essential workstation element. It should support your back, legs, buttocks, and arms, and adjustability helps different users fit the same chair and vary position during the day. The relevant criteria are support and fit, not a particular chair shape, brand, or price tier.
Adjust the chair first
- Set the back support so it contacts and supports your back rather than leaving you perched at the front of the seat.
- Set the seat height so both feet are supported while your legs remain comfortable.
- Recheck the desk and keyboard. If raising the chair to reach the keyboard leaves your feet unsupported, the chair and desk are not yet working together.
- Make small changes while seated at the actual workstation; a chair that feels good away from the desk may place the keyboard or screen at an awkward height.
OSHA recommends trying different chairs before purchase because users differ in body dimensions and support needs. Do not treat a chair purchase as a guaranteed solution if the desk, monitor, or keyboard remains poorly positioned.
When a footrest is appropriate
If a fixed-height work surface forces you to raise the chair so high that your feet no longer rest firmly, an adjustable footrest is a conditional fix. It supports the feet while preserving the desk height. It is not a required accessory for everyone, and it should not be used to excuse a keyboard position that still makes you lift your shoulders or bend your wrists.

The surface must provide more than a place to put a laptop. It needs enough depth to place the monitor at least 20 inches from your eyes, plus room for a keyboard and pointing device without crowding the front edge. The area beneath it should allow your legs to move and should not force contact with a drawer, support, or other obstruction.
Keep essential items in the primary zone
Frequently used items belong within easy reach so you are not repeatedly twisting or extending your arm. Keep the keyboard and mouse close together and leave enough palm and forearm room to avoid pressing against a hard desk edge. OSHA notes that desk edges can create contact stress; rearrange the surface or add a suitable tray rather than resting wrists on a sharp edge.
Fix a shallow or awkward surface before replacing it
A larger or height-adjustable desk is not automatically necessary. If the current surface is too shallow, OSHA identifies several possible layout changes: move the desk, use a shallower flat-panel display, use a corner to gain depth, or use an adjustable keyboard tray. These are solutions to particular constraints, not a universal buying list.
A tray is useful only if it leaves sufficient room for both the keyboard and pointing device and places them at a height where your shoulders remain relaxed and wrists neutral. A tray that is too narrow or unstable simply moves the problem.

Monitor placement: readable without leaning
Put the display directly in front of you rather than off to one side for routine work. OSHA’s quick tips call for at least 20 inches of viewing distance; its monitor guidance gives a preferred range of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm). These are workstation recommendations, not a rigid guarantee for every screen, text size, or user. Increase text size or adjust the distance if reading requires leaning forward or squinting.
Set height and angle
Place the top line of the screen at or below eye level. The display should be low enough that you can read it with your head balanced rather than tipped back. Centering and height should be checked from your normal seated position, not while standing.
Check glare before buying a display accessory
Reflections can make a correctly sized screen difficult to read. Whenever possible, place the display at a right angle to windows and other bright light sources rather than facing or backing directly into them. Diffuse light is preferable to a harsh point source, and blinds, curtains, or other window coverings can help. Change the room or monitor position first; a new screen does not automatically solve a reflection problem.
OSHA’s monitor guidance covers distance, centering, height, and text-size considerations, while its workstation-environment guidance addresses lighting and glare.
Keyboard and mouse: keep the input zone neutral
Place the keyboard and mouse or other pointing device in front of you, close together, and within easy reach. Adjust the chair and work surface so your elbows are about level with the keyboard. Your shoulders should stay relaxed, your elbows should remain near your torso, and your wrists should not bend up, down, or sideways while typing or pointing.
Use furniture adjustments first
If the keyboard is too high, lower the work surface or raise the chair only if your feet remain supported. If neither can be adjusted, an adjustable keyboard tray may create the needed height, provided it is large and stable enough for both input devices. Do not place the mouse far away simply because the keyboard occupies the center; that encourages repeated reaching.

Wrist rests are optional
OSHA notes that opinions vary about wrist rests. Proper use may reduce muscle activity and help facilitate neutral wrist angles, but a wrist rest is not a core requirement, treatment, or substitute for correct keyboard height. If you use one, keep the hands free to move while typing and avoid pressing hard into the edge.
See OSHA’s keyboard guidance and good working positions for neutral positioning principles.
Laptop users: separate the screen from the typing surface
A laptop couples its screen and keyboard. Raising the screen to a comfortable reading height can therefore raise the keyboard too high; placing the keyboard at a comfortable typing height can leave the screen too low. This is the clearest case in which an accessory changes the arrangement rather than merely adding convenience.
For a laptop used as the primary work computer with intensive keyboard use, OSHA recommends an auxiliary full-size keyboard and monitor. The separate monitor can be centered and placed 20 to 40 inches away while the keyboard stays near elbow height. A laptop stand alone may raise the display, but it does not provide a separate typing surface, so it does not solve the coupled-position problem by itself.
For occasional short sessions, the built-in keyboard and display may be adequate if you can maintain a comfortable position. For sustained typing, judge the setup by whether the screen and input device can be positioned independently, not by whether a stand looks tidy.
OSHA’s additional information gives the auxiliary-equipment recommendation for intensive laptop work.

What to buy when adjustment is not enough
Buy against an identified mismatch. The following comparison keeps each category tied to the problem it is meant to solve.
| Problem or task | Option to consider | Selection criteria | When it is unnecessary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back, seat, or arm support cannot be adjusted adequately | Different chair | Back, leg, buttock, and arm support; adjustability; compatibility with keyboard and screen height; ability to try it before purchase | When the existing chair supports you and can be coordinated with the desk |
| Feet cannot reach the floor after setting keyboard height | Adjustable footrest | Stable support that preserves a comfortable seated fit at the fixed desk height | When your feet already rest firmly or the desk can be adjusted instead |
| Monitor cannot be 20 inches away, or the surface crowds the inputs | Desk change, relocation, shallower display, corner placement, or keyboard tray | Monitor depth, useful surface area, leg clearance, and a keyboard height that keeps shoulders relaxed | When the current surface meets those requirements |
| Keyboard and pointing device are too high or too far apart | Adjustable keyboard tray or surface adjustment | Enough room for both devices, stability, and neutral wrist and elbow position | When both inputs are already close and level with the elbows |
| Intensive typing on a laptop | Auxiliary full-size keyboard plus external monitor | Compatibility with the computer, independent screen and input placement, and adequate desk depth | When use is brief or the built-in arrangement can be maintained comfortably |
| Reflections obscure the display | Room or monitor repositioning, diffuse light, blinds, or curtains | Display at a right angle to windows or bright sources and readable text without glare | When the screen is already clear under normal lighting |
The official guidance does not establish a universally best brand, model, price, or performance claim for these categories. Compare products by the fit criteria in the table and by compatibility with your room and equipment.
Diagnose common setup problems
Your feet dangle or your knees are uncomfortable
First check whether the chair is set high only because the keyboard or desk is high. Lower the work surface if possible. If it is fixed, use an adjustable footrest after confirming that the keyboard and screen are otherwise positioned correctly.
You lean toward the screen
Move the display closer while keeping at least 20 inches of distance, enlarge text, and check that the screen is centered and free of glare. A monitor that is too far away or hard to read can encourage forward leaning even when its height is correct.
Your shoulders rise while typing
Lower the keyboard position or raise the chair only if your feet remain supported. Bring the keyboard and pointing device closer, and keep both in the primary work zone rather than reaching across the desk.
Your wrist contacts a hard edge
Change the keyboard depth, use a suitable tray, or reposition the work surface so the edge does not press against the wrist or forearm. A soft wrist rest may help some users, but it cannot correct an unsuitable height or reach.
The laptop screen and keyboard cannot both feel right
For sustained typing, separate the functions with an external monitor and full-size keyboard. Raising the laptop alone addresses only the display height and may make the keyboard less comfortable.

A five-minute final checklist
- The work surface is stable and leaves clear legroom.
- The display is centered directly in front of you.
- The screen is at least 20 inches away; 20 to 40 inches is OSHA’s preferred range when practical.
- The top line of the display is at or below eye level.
- Text is readable without leaning or squinting.
- The keyboard and pointing device are close together and within easy reach.
- Elbows are approximately level with the keyboard, shoulders are relaxed, and wrists are not bent sideways or sharply up or down.
- Your back is supported and your feet rest firmly on the floor or a stable footrest.
- Frequently used items are in the primary work zone, and hard edges are not pressing into your forearms.
- Windows and bright lights do not create distracting reflections.
- If you use a laptop for intensive typing, the screen and keyboard can be positioned independently.
When every item passes, stop shopping. Revisit the arrangement if your tasks, equipment, room, or body position changes; the goal is a setup that fits the person and work, not a catalog of accessories.
