On many washing machines, I marks the prewash-detergent compartment, II marks the main-wash detergent compartment, and a flower marks the fabric-softener compartment. Those meanings are common rather than universal. Drawer layouts, inserts, automatic dispensers and permitted additives vary by model, so the exact washer manual is the deciding authority when its markings do not match this pattern.
The three symbols most washing-machine drawers use
Pull the dispenser open and look for a Roman numeral or a small flower icon. The usual functions are:
| Marking | Usual meaning | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Prewash detergent | The selected programme includes a prewash and your washer instructions call for a prewash dose. | Do not add detergent here for an ordinary cycle that has no prewash. |
| II | Main-wash detergent | The washer is running its normal wash phase. | The symbol alone does not tell you which detergent form, dose or additional product is allowed. |
| Flower | Fabric softener; on some models, liquid starch is also listed | The manual confirms the flower compartment for that additive. | Stay below the compartment’s maximum line and check the manual before using any other additive. |
This three-symbol pattern is a reliable starting point, not a universal standard. Bosch describes these meanings in a general guide but warns that the guide is not specific to every model. Samsung documents several dispenser designs, including automatic dispensers, while LG describes separate detergent and additive compartments. The number, position and shape of compartments can therefore differ even when the functions are similar.

What I means in a washing-machine drawer
I is normally the prewash compartment
The compartment marked I is generally intended for detergent used during a prewash. A prewash is an extra preliminary wash selected before the main programme. Put a prewash dose in I only when the programme actually includes that stage and the washer’s instructions tell you to add one.

If you select a cycle without prewash, filling I can leave detergent unused or release it at a time the programme does not expect. The symbol identifies the stage, but it does not establish the amount: use the washer manual and the detergent package for the dose.
When I is not the right drawer
Do not interpret I as “the first place detergent goes” for every load. It is tied to the prewash function. If the machine has a special insert, dosing cartridge or different labels, follow those model-specific instructions instead of assuming the Roman numeral has its usual role.
What II means in a washing-machine drawer
II is normally the main-wash detergent compartment
The compartment marked II is the common location for detergent used in the principal wash. For a normal programme with no prewash, this is usually the drawer you need. Both Bosch’s general symbol guide and a Bosch operating manual identify II with the main wash.
Do not treat II as a universal additive compartment
A Bosch manual may list additional agents for particular models, but that does not prove every washer permits those products in II. Whether a machine accepts a particular liquid, powder, bleach, stain remover or other additive depends on its design and instructions. Check both the washer manual and the product label before adding anything beyond the detergent intended for the main wash.
What the flower symbol means
The flower normally marks fabric softener
A flower icon usually identifies the fabric-softener compartment. Bosch also identifies this compartment for liquid starch on the models covered by its guidance. Use the flower marking only after confirming that your manual assigns it to the additive you intend to use.

Observe the maximum line
Do not fill the softener compartment above its marked maximum level. Overfilling can cause the product to be released at the wrong point or leave residue in the drawer. The max line is a physical limit for that dispenser; it is not a suggested amount for every load. The correct quantity still comes from the additive label and the washer instructions.
What the flower does not tell you
The flower does not automatically mean that every conditioner, starch, fragrance product or bleach is suitable. Some machines separate additives differently, and some products require a dedicated dispenser or another method. If the icon, compartment shape and manual disagree, stop and verify the exact model instructions rather than guessing.

How to identify the correct compartment on your machine
- Open the drawer fully. Pull it out far enough to see every marking, maximum line and removable insert. Some symbols are molded into the plastic and are difficult to read when the drawer is only partly open.
- Check for I and II. If both appear, treat I as the prewash compartment and II as the main-wash compartment only when the selected programme and manual support that arrangement.
- Find the flower marking. Confirm that it is the softener compartment for your model. Note its maximum-fill line before pouring anything in.
- Inspect inserts and labels. A removable liquid-detergent measuring aid, flap or cartridge can change how a compartment is used. It is a model-specific component, not a universal symbol.
- Match the compartment to the programme. Add detergent to I only for a programme with prewash; use II for the main wash on machines that use the standard markings; use the flower section for the confirmed softener or other permitted additive.
- Verify the product and dose. Read the detergent or additive label and the washer manual together. The symbols identify a function, not a universal quantity or product formula.
- Use the exact model manual when anything differs. Samsung specifically directs owners to the manual for their product, and manufacturer documentation shows that dispenser arrangements vary.
Why drawer layouts vary between washing machines
General symbol guides are not model instructions
A manufacturer may publish a broad explanation of common symbols for several product families. Bosch’s general washing-machine-symbols guide explicitly says it is not specific to all models. Use it to recognize the likely meaning, then confirm the actual drawer and permitted products in your machine’s operating manual.
Some machines use automatic dispensers
Samsung describes multiple drawer types, including automatic dispensers. An automatic system may store detergent or softener and release a measured amount without using the same open compartments as a basic drawer. Do not pour product into a compartment merely because its position resembles a conventional II or flower section; identify the model’s instructions first.
Separate detergent and additive sections are not identical everywhere
LG’s support guidance describes separate detergent and additive compartments, but the physical arrangement and labels depend on the washer. A compartment’s location—left, right, front or rear—is not a dependable identifier. The marking and the model documentation matter more than position.

Liquid-detergent aids can be model dependent
Some Bosch machines include a liquid-detergent measuring aid. A Bosch manual also specifies restrictions on when that aid is used. This insert is not evidence that liquid detergent always belongs in the drawer or that it should always go directly in the drum. Follow the instructions for the particular appliance and the detergent package.
Detergent, softener and other additives: what the symbols cannot decide
The drawer icon answers “which wash stage or additive section is this?” It does not answer every chemical or dosing question. Before using a product, check:
- Product form: powder, liquid, capsule, starch, softener, bleach or stain treatment may have different instructions.
- Amount: water hardness, load size, soil level and the product label can affect the recommended dose; the symbol itself supplies no measurement.
- Compatibility: a product allowed in one manufacturer’s dispenser may be prohibited or routed differently in another model.
- Release method: a conventional drawer, insert, cartridge or automatic dispenser may require a different loading procedure.
- Programme design: prewash detergent belongs in I only if the selected cycle includes that phase; main-wash detergent belongs in II on machines using the standard arrangement.
When the washer manual and product label give different directions, do not improvise. Resolve the conflict using the exact appliance documentation or the manufacturer’s support channel, because the drawer symbol by itself cannot settle it.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Putting the normal dose in I
Symptom: You choose a regular cycle without prewash but fill the compartment marked I. Correction: Move the main-wash detergent to II if your model uses the standard markings. Reserve I for a confirmed prewash dose.
Filling the flower compartment to the top
Symptom: Softener reaches above the visible max line. Correction: Empty enough to stay below the line, then use the label’s recommended quantity. The line belongs to the dispenser; it is not a substitute for the product dose.

- EASY TO USE: Pour desired amount of liquid detergent into the laundry dispenser or drum. Tide laundry detergent works on all machine washable fabrics and in all cycles and water temperatures, including cold and quick cycles
Assuming every liquid goes in II
Symptom: You place bleach, stain remover or another liquid in the main-wash section because it is liquid. Correction: Check whether the washer permits that product, where its manufacturer directs it, and whether the product label imposes a different method.
Relying on drawer position
Symptom: You use the left-hand or largest compartment without reading its marking. Correction: Identify the printed or molded symbol and compare it with the exact manual. Position alone is not consistent across brands and models.
Ignoring a removable insert
Symptom: A flap or measuring aid changes the compartment’s appearance and you pour detergent around it. Correction: Read the manual’s instructions for installing and using that insert. Bosch documentation shows that such aids can have model-specific restrictions.
Using a familiar symbol on an unfamiliar automatic dispenser
Symptom: The machine has a reservoir or automatic dosing system rather than three simple open sections. Correction: Stop using the conventional I/II/flower assumption and follow the automatic-dispenser procedure in the product manual.

- If the cycle has a prewash and the drawer has I, consult the manual for the prewash dose and place it there.
- If the cycle has a main wash and the drawer has II, use that compartment for the detergent approved for the machine.
- If you are adding softener and the drawer has a confirmed flower compartment, stay below its max line.
- If you cannot find these symbols, see an automatic dispenser, or find an insert or label that differs, use the exact model manual before adding product.
- If you are unsure about a liquid, powder, capsule, bleach, starch or stain product, follow both the washer instructions and the product label rather than inferring permission from the symbol.
Answers to the questions people commonly ask
What do I and II mean in a washing-machine drawer?
I usually means detergent for a prewash; II usually means detergent for the main wash. Confirm the assignment in your model’s manual, especially if the drawer includes inserts or automatic dosing.

Which drawer is for detergent?
On a conventional drawer, II is normally for the main-wash detergent and I is for detergent used by a selected prewash. A different layout or an automatic dispenser requires the model instructions.
Where does fabric softener go?
It normally goes in the compartment marked with a flower. Do not exceed that compartment’s maximum line, and confirm any alternative additive in the manual.
Do I put detergent in I or II?
Use I only when the programme includes a prewash and calls for a prewash dose. Use II for the main-wash detergent on machines with the common markings.
Bottom line
The quickest interpretation is I = prewash, II = main wash and flower = fabric softener. Treat that as a starting map, not a guarantee. Drawer designs and permitted products vary, so the exact washer manual, the programme selected and the detergent or additive label must determine what you actually load.
