The AES instruction set is a set of processor instructions that helps software perform AES encryption and decryption in hardware. Intel calls its implementation AES-NI. It accelerates parts of the AES algorithm; it is not a separate cipher, encryption mode, or automatic guarantee that every task will run faster.
How AES and AES-NI differ
AES, the Advanced Encryption Standard, is a cryptographic algorithm. AES-NI is Intel’s name for processor instructions that perform computationally intensive AES operations. Software must use those instructions—directly or through a cryptographic library or compiler implementation—to benefit. Their presence alone does not encrypt files, connections, or other data.
AES operates on 128-bit data blocks. It supports 128-, 192-, and 256-bit keys, using 10, 12, and 14 rounds respectively, as documented in Intel’s Software Developer’s Manual.
What the six AES-NI instructions do
Intel documents six AES-NI instructions. Four handle encryption or decryption rounds; one performs a transformation used in decryption; and one assists with round-key generation.

AESKEYGENASSIST |
Assists with generating round keys from the cipher key. |
These are building blocks for an AES implementation, not six separate encryption algorithms. Intel’s AES-NI overview describes their individual functions.
What AES-NI means for speed and security
Hardware instructions can accelerate AES operations, but the actual performance benefit depends on the processor, software implementation, and workload. An application that spends little time encrypting or decrypting may see little overall change even if its AES operations are faster. Intel’s published examples are historical and workload-specific, not a performance guarantee for current computers.

AES-NI supports AES operations; it is not itself an encryption mode. The security of a system also depends on how software uses AES and on the surrounding cryptographic design. The mere presence of AES-NI does not establish that an application is using it or that the application is secure.

How to check whether a processor supports AES-NI
Support depends on the exact processor model and, in some product lines, may not be present on every SKU. Intel’s 12th Generation Intel Core processor datasheet describes AES-NI as SIMD instructions for AES encryption and decryption and notes the SKU caveat.

- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
- Identify the exact CPU model. Check the processor name in your operating system’s system information or device settings.
- Check the manufacturer’s specification for that model. Look for AES-NI or AES instruction support; do not infer support from the processor family name alone.
- Check software support separately. A capable processor does not guarantee that a particular application or library uses the instructions.
Intel’s cited documents define Intel’s AES-NI terminology and instructions; they do not provide a current vendor-by-vendor comparison or establish the names used by other processor manufacturers.
