Depending on the model, a Casio Pro Trek’s sensors measure compass direction, barometric pressure and temperature; the watch can use pressure readings to calculate relative altitude. Some models also count steps with an accelerometer. “Triple Sensor” refers to three sensor functions—not a guarantee that every Pro Trek has the same features or specifications.

What does Pro Trek’s Triple Sensor measure?

Casio describes Triple Sensor as three miniature sensors for measuring directions, barometric pressure or altitude, and temperature. In practice, the watch uses a magnetic sensor for compass readings, a pressure sensor for barometric pressure and pressure-derived altitude, and a temperature sensor for temperature. The phrase “pressure/altitude” does not mean that the watch has a separate sensor that directly detects elevation.

  • Direction: The digital compass senses the magnetic field and displays a direction, such as north, and a bearing angle.
  • Barometric pressure: The barometer measures local air pressure. Supported models may display pressure readings, trends, a graph, or a pressure-change indication.
  • Relative altitude: The watch calculates an altitude estimate from pressure readings rather than sensing elevation directly.
  • Temperature: The thermometer reports the temperature measured at the watch.

Casio’s Triple Sensor technology overview describes these three functions. The available functions and their details depend on the model and module.

That distinction between sensing and calculating is important when interpreting the displays. Direction, pressure, and temperature are the measured inputs described by the sensor functions. The altimeter uses pressure as the basis for an altitude estimate. A watch may group these functions under the Triple Sensor name, but that label does not mean that all four readings come from four independent sensors—or that every watch presents them in the same way.

Does the altimeter measure elevation directly?

No. A Pro Trek altimeter derives relative altitude from atmospheric pressure. Because pressure changes with weather as well as elevation, the altitude display can shift even when the watch remains in one place. The reading is therefore useful as a reference for changes in elevation, but it is not an independent measurement of height above sea level.

This is the main limitation to keep in mind when using a pressure-based altitude reading. If the displayed altitude changes, the watch’s calculation reflects pressure; it does not by itself tell you whether the change came from a change in elevation or from a change in weather. Treat the figure as a relative reference, especially when conditions are changing, rather than as a guaranteed fixed elevation.

When calibration matters

If you need a more useful altitude reading, calibrate the watch against a known local elevation using the procedure in the guide for its module. Calibration can improve the reference point, but it does not remove pressure changes caused by weather. Follow the exact module guide for its calibration steps and display behavior.

The known elevation is a reference for the watch’s pressure-based estimate; it does not turn the watch into a direct elevation sensor. The available calibration controls and instructions are model-specific, so use the guide that matches the module number rather than applying steps from a different Pro Trek. If you compare readings from different watches, confirm that their modules and calibration state are comparable before drawing conclusions from small differences.

What do the barometer and temperature readings tell you?

Barometric pressure and trends

The barometer reports local air pressure. On models that offer a graph or pressure-change indication, a trend can help you notice that conditions are changing. It is a clue, not a weather forecast: the watch is not a dedicated weather instrument, and the reading alone cannot establish what weather will occur.

Pressure data can also help explain why an altitude estimate shifts: the same pressure input is relevant to both the barometer reading and the altitude calculation. A pressure trend or graph is therefore useful context, not proof of a particular weather outcome or an independent confirmation of elevation. Do not assume that every model has a graph, trend display, or the same way of signaling pressure changes; check the module guide for the functions it supports.

Temperature at the watch

The thermometer measures temperature at the watch, so the case and heat from your wrist can affect the reading. For a more representative measurement, consult the operating guide for the exact module; the recommended procedure and relevant caveats may differ by model.

As with the other functions, the useful interpretation is bounded by what the watch actually measures. A temperature shown by a watch on your wrist can be influenced by the watch’s immediate surroundings and the wearer’s body heat. If the temperature figure matters, follow the model-specific measurement instructions instead of treating a wrist-worn reading as an unrestricted measurement of ambient conditions.

Can you rely on the compass in the field?

A digital compass can help with orientation, but its readings may be affected by magnets, metal objects, electrical appliances, and other sources of magnetic interference. Casio recommends carrying another compass to confirm readings during serious trekking or mountain climbing. Its module 5682 guide also states: “This watch is not a special-purpose measuring instrument. Measurement function readings are intended for general reference only.” See the module 5682 operation guide.

The practical takeaway is to distinguish a convenient orientation aid from a sole source of navigation information. If a reading seems questionable, magnetic interference is one possible reason; the watch’s general-reference warning also means you should not treat its display as a precision instrument. Casio’s recommendation is particularly relevant when the consequences of a wrong bearing matter: take another compass and use it to confirm the watch reading rather than relying on the Pro Trek alone.

Do all Pro Trek watches have the same sensors?

No. Pro Trek features, measurement ranges, accuracy figures, and functions vary by model and module. Casio’s US overview says many Pro Trek watches include an accelerometer for measuring steps, but that does not establish step counting as a feature on every watch. The overview identifies the PRG340 series as having a compass, altimeter, barometer, and thermometer; that example should not be taken as a specification for the entire range. See Casio’s US Pro Trek overview.

Step counting is a separate example of why a family-wide assumption can be misleading. Casio says many Pro Trek watches include an accelerometer for measuring steps; “many” is not the same as “all.” Confirm the specific model’s feature list if step counting matters to you. Likewise, the PRG340 example confirms a feature set for that series, not for every watch carrying the Pro Trek name.

Example: module 5602 measurement specifications

The figures below are Casio’s stated specifications for module 5602 only. They are not Pro Trek-wide limits. Casio’s online specification page does not state a publication year in the page text; the figures were accessed in 2026. See Casio’s module 5602 specifications.

Function Module 5602 stated range Module 5602 stated accuracy or unit
Compass 0°–359° Direction-sensor accuracy within ±10°
Barometer 260–1,100 hPa Pressure-sensor accuracy within ±3 hPa
Relative altimeter −700 to 10,000 m Altimeter accuracy within ±75 m
Temperature −10.0°C to 60.0°C Display measurement unit: 0.1°C

These specifications illustrate why comparisons should use the exact module documentation. A different Pro Trek module may list different ranges or accuracy, and a model may vary in how it presents or records measurements. Casio’s module 5602 operation guide provides the corresponding operating details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the compass range of 0°–359° and its stated accuracy within ±10° are two different specifications: one describes the displayed direction span, while the other is the stated accuracy for that module. Similarly, a pressure measurement range and its stated accuracy describe different limits. The relative-altitude range and accuracy belong to the module 5602 specifications, and the temperature display unit of 0.1°C describes the display increment—not a promise that every Pro Trek measures temperature in that increment.

These numbers are useful for understanding the level of detail a module’s documentation can provide, not for predicting the performance of another watch. Do not transfer module 5602 figures to a watch just because it is also a Pro Trek or uses the Triple Sensor label. Check whether the module number matches before citing any range or accuracy number.

How to compare two Pro Trek models

If you are choosing between models, compare the documentation in a consistent order rather than treating the Triple Sensor name as a complete specification.

  1. Confirm the exact module and sensor feature set. Check which functions the watch actually lists, including whether an accelerometer-based step-counting feature is present.
  2. Compare measurement ranges and stated accuracy. Use the figures listed for each module and compare like with like. A range on one module is not evidence of the range on another.
  3. Check how readings are presented or recorded. Look for the model’s documented graph, pressure-change, logging, and display features rather than assuming that two watches with the same sensor label behave identically.
  4. Review calibration and operating instructions. Confirm which procedures the module supports and how Casio says to interpret its readings and limitations.

This approach separates the sensor category from the actual details that may matter in use. Two Pro Trek watches might both be described with Triple Sensor functions, yet their specifications, display details, or other features need not match. For a concrete illustration of module-specific documentation, the 5602 specifications above list defined ranges and accuracy figures for that module. Use the exact documentation for the models you are comparing, and avoid assuming that one model’s numbers or functions carry over to another.

How to check what your Pro Trek measures

  1. Find the model and module number. Check the watch markings and the documentation supplied for the specific watch; do not assume a family name identifies its complete feature set.
  2. Open the matching Casio support guide. Confirm that the guide corresponds to that module, not merely to another Pro Trek with a similar appearance or sensor label.
  3. Check the feature list and specifications. Verify whether the watch has compass, barometer, altitude, thermometer, or step-count functions, then note any stated measurement ranges and accuracy.
  4. Read the relevant operating instructions. Check model-specific procedures for calibration, measurement, graphs, and any limits or cautions before interpreting a reading.

This quick check answers both “What does my watch measure?” and “Can I use this number as a specification?” The first requires verifying which functions the model has; the second requires checking the module’s own stated ranges, accuracy, and instructions. A product-family page can provide an overview, but the matching module guide is the place to confirm details for a particular watch.

What the readings are—and are not

Pro Trek sensors provide useful reference measurements for orientation and environmental changes, but they are not substitutes for dedicated measuring instruments when precision or safety depends on the result. Compass interference can distort direction; weather can shift pressure-based altitude; and body heat can affect temperature readings. Use the exact module guide to understand the limits of your watch, and confirm critical navigation readings with another compass.

In short, a Pro Trek can combine a compass, barometer, pressure-derived altimeter, and thermometer, with step counting on some models. The precise sensor set, limits, and presentation depend on the watch. Read the module-specific guide, calibrate altitude against a known local elevation when accuracy matters, and treat measurements as general reference rather than special-purpose instrument readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Triple Sensor measure?

Casio describes Triple Sensor as measuring direction, barometric pressure or altitude, and temperature. The altitude function is calculated from pressure; it is not a separate sensor that directly detects elevation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Pro Trek altimeter measure elevation directly?

No. It derives relative altitude from pressure readings. Weather-related pressure changes can shift the display even when the watch stays in one place, so calibrate against a known local elevation when accuracy matters and follow the module guide.

Does every Pro Trek have a compass and thermometer?

Do not assume that every Pro Trek has the same feature set or specifications. Check the exact model and module guide. Casio identifies the PRG340 series as having compass, altimeter, barometer, and thermometer functions, but that does not establish those features for the whole range.

Can a Pro Trek count steps?

Some models include an accelerometer for step counting. Casio’s overview says many Pro Trek watches have this feature, not all, so confirm it in the specifications for the exact model.

Can I rely on the Pro Trek compass for serious trekking?

Casio warns that magnets, metal objects, electrical appliances, and other sources can affect compass readings. It recommends carrying another compass to confirm readings during serious trekking or mountain climbing; readings are intended for general reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are module 5602 specifications the same for all Pro Trek watches?

No. The cited ranges and accuracy figures are for module 5602 only. Compare the exact modules and use each model’s specifications and operation guide.

The Bottom Line

A Casio Pro Trek’s core Triple Sensor functions are compass direction, barometric pressure, pressure-derived relative altitude, and temperature. Some models add step counting. Because the sensor set and specifications vary, check the exact module guide; treat readings as general reference, calibrate altitude when needed, and carry another compass for serious trekking or climbing.
