There is no single official PlayStation 2 connector called a “combo port.” The console’s connections vary by model: front USB and, on some earlier systems, S400 i.LINK; controller and memory-card slots; rear AV MULTI OUT and DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL); and an expansion bay on some models. To choose a cable or peripheral safely, start with the console’s SCPH model number and check the accessory against the manual for that exact model and region.
Identify your PS2 before choosing an accessory
Find the SCPH model number printed on the console label, then consult its regional manual and an accessory compatibility list. Sony’s compatibility chart is for Japan, while the SCPH-90004 manual is for a French-region model; their part numbers and guidance should not automatically be applied to every territory.
A connector’s shape or label is not enough to establish compatibility. Check the accessory’s model number as well, and check game support when the intended use depends on a particular title. Sony’s accessory compatibility chart lists supported products by console family.
What the front USB and S400 i.LINK connections support
USB: only documented peripherals are a safe starting point
Sony’s compatibility chart lists USB keyboards, USB mice, and the EyeToy USB camera for the model families shown. That does not mean every USB device works: the chart is not evidence of general support for USB storage, audio devices, or arbitrary controllers, and a game may need to support the peripheral itself. Confirm both console compatibility and software support before buying for a specific use.

S400 i.LINK: not USB
On models that have it, S400 i.LINK is an IEEE 1394 connection, not a USB port. Its presence and supported uses depend on the console revision; it should not be treated as a universal PS2 connector or as a substitute for a network adapter. Sony’s SCPH-90004 manual lists products using S400 i.LINK as incompatible with that console. A passive USB-to-i.LINK cable does not make the standards interchangeable.
Controller, memory-card, and multitap compatibility
Controller and memory-card support should be checked against the console model and the needs of the game. A compatibility entry for one accessory type does not prove that every third-party device or every game will work.

Multitaps are particularly model-specific. Sony’s Japanese chart maps SCPH-70120 to the SCPH-70000 and SCPH-90000 families, and SCPH-10090 to SCPH-10000, SCPH-30000, and SCPH-50000 families. For the French-region SCPH-90004, Sony says to use only multitap SCPH-70120 E and warns that another model number may damage the console. Follow the documentation for your exact model and region rather than assuming the chart’s part numbers are universal. See the SCPH-90004 manual.

Connect a PS2 to a TV with component input
A component AV cable connects through the console’s AV MULTI OUT, but the TV must have component video inputs and the console’s video-output setting must match the connection. Sony lists component AV cable models in its compatibility chart; confirm the cable model and regional compatibility before purchasing.

- With the existing AV cable connected, open the PS2 system configuration and set “Component Video Out” to “Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr” for a TV’s component input. Sony’s SCPH-90004 manual gives this setting for component connections.
- Turn off the console, connect the component AV cable to AV MULTI OUT and the matching TV inputs, then select the corresponding input on the TV.
- If the TV accepts RGB rather than component video, select RGB instead, as the manual directs.
- Use progressive-scan output such as 480p only if the display and cable support it. Sony warns that an unsupported display or cable can result in no picture.
The component cable is sold separately; Sony’s instructions describe using the supplied AV cable to change the setting before switching to the component cable. The exact on-screen path can vary by system software or region, so use the manual for your console.

AV MULTI OUT carries video and audio through compatible AV cables. DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) is a separate optical digital-audio connection; neither is interchangeable with USB or i.LINK. Check the receiving equipment and cable type as well as the PS2 model when planning a connection.

Some PS2 models have an expansion bay for accessories such as a PlayStation BB Unit, Network Adaptor, or hard drive. Sony’s Japan chart lists these for specified model families and marks the SCPH-70000 and SCPH-90000 slim families incompatible with the expansion-bay products shown there. Do not infer expansion-bay support from the presence of another connector, or assume an accessory listed for one family fits another.

A quick compatibility check before you buy
- Record the full SCPH model number and identify the console’s region.
- Match the accessory’s exact model number to the console family in the local Sony manual or compatibility chart.
- Confirm that the accessory uses the connection you intend to use: USB, i.LINK, AV MULTI OUT, controller or memory-card slot, or expansion bay.
- For video cables, check the TV’s input type and whether it supports the selected video mode.
- For game-dependent peripherals, verify support for the specific title rather than relying only on connector compatibility.
