Precision screwdriver bits are not interchangeable tips with different names. Each has a specific drive profile—the shape that engages a screw recess—and a size that must fill that recess correctly. Identify the recess, select the matching profile, and choose the size that seats fully without rocking. The wrong type or size can slip, damage the screw, or make removal impossible.
This guide explains what the common bit types do, how to tell similar profiles apart, how shank compatibility differs from tip compatibility, and how to choose a useful precision bit kit without assuming that one profile belongs to one universal device category.
What a precision screwdriver bit actually does
A bit transfers turning force from a handle into the shaped recess in a screw head. The recess and bit must correspond in two ways:

- Size: the dimensions within that profile, such as PH000 versus PH1 or T5 versus T10.
A bit that is close but not correct may appear to work while contacting only a few edges. A bit that is too small can twist or round the recess; one that is too large may not enter fully. The practical rule in the iFixit guide “Choosing the Right Screwdriver Bit” (updated August 11, 2026) is to use a bit that fills the screw head. Apply only light hand pressure while testing the fit.

Profile names describe geometry, not a guaranteed device assignment. A manufacturer can use several drive types in one product, and two products that look similar may use different screws. Treat the screw in front of you—not a device stereotype—as the authority.
Common precision bit types and what they engage

How to identify an unfamiliar screw recess
- Clean the head. Remove dust, adhesive or corrosion so the edges are visible. A clogged recess can look like a different profile.
- Look straight down. Use bright, centered light and magnification if necessary. Viewing at an angle can make a six-lobed star resemble a cross.
- Count defining features. Count four cross arms, five pentalobe lobes or six Torx lobes. Check whether a star has a center pin, which indicates a security variant.
- Separate similar crosses. A cross may be Phillips, Pozidriv or JIS. Look for the extra ribs of Pozidriv and consider JIS when a Phillips bit does not sit cleanly.
- Try the likely profile without turning. The tip should enter smoothly and sit on the full depth of the recess. Do not force a near-match to “test” it.
Do not infer a universal mapping such as “all phones use pentalobe” or “all electronics use Phillips.” The documented sources establish profile differences and kit assortments, not an every-device rule.
Choosing the correct size
Within one family, size markings are not interchangeable. PH000, PH00, PH0 and PH1 are different Phillips sizes; T5 and T10 are different Torx sizes; and a millimeter hex measurement identifies a specific opening.

Signs the size is right
- The bit reaches the bottom of the recess without excessive force.
- Its sides contact the recess evenly, with little or no rocking.
- Moderate finger pressure keeps it seated while you turn slowly.
Signs the size is wrong
- The tip wobbles or touches only the corners.
- The bit bottoms out before its driving faces engage.
- It enters only partway, binds, or requires hammering.
- The recess begins to shine, deform or shed metal as you turn.
If any of these symptoms appears, stop. Re-check the profile and try the next size only after comparing the fit visually. A larger bit is not automatically safer; it can damage the edges if it does not fully seat.

Phillips, JIS and Pozidriv: why similar crosses cause problems
Cross-shaped recesses deserve extra care because their silhouettes overlap. Phillips has four principal arms and is intentionally capable of cam-out under excessive torque. JIS has different geometry, and iFixit specifically cautions that Phillips and JIS bits are not always interchangeable. Pozidriv adds smaller ribs between the main arms and is listed as a separate family in the ARCTIC toolkit.
When a cross screw slips at low torque, do not automatically increase pressure. Inspect the recess for the extra Pozidriv ribs, consider whether it may be JIS, and check that the bit size fills the head. If the screw is already damaged, a correctly matched replacement bit may no longer be sufficient; preserve the head and use a repair method appropriate to the fastener rather than forcing an ill-fitting tip.
Torx, security Torx and pentalobe: count the lobes
Torx is a six-lobed star drive. Pentalobe has five rounded lobes, so the two profiles are visibly different when viewed directly from above. Security Torx keeps the six-lobed outline but adds a center pin. That pin is the reason a hollow security bit is required; a regular Torx bit cannot clear it.
Do not choose a Torx bit solely because a screw looks “star-shaped.” Count the lobes, inspect the center and then test the size. A bit that fits the outline but strikes a center pin will not seat fully and can damage the recess.

Tri-point, tri-wing and other specialty profiles
Three-lobed drives are described with several names. Some kit specifications say “Tri-Point,” while others say “tri-wing.” Those terms are not a promise that every manufacturer uses the same dimensions. Compare the tip’s wings with the screw’s recess and select the size that fills all three contact areas.
Xiaomi’s Mi Precision Screwdriver Kit specifications (model MJJXLSD002QW) also list W-type, U-type and tri-angle profiles, while other sets may include square drives or nut drivers. These specialty bits are useful only when the matching recess is present; owning one does not make it a substitute for a Phillips, Torx or hex bit.
Bit tip compatibility is separate from shank compatibility
Even a perfectly matched tip is unusable if its shank does not fit the handle or driver. Check the interface before buying loose replacement bits. The Xiaomi specification identifies its bits as C4 × 28 mm. That measurement describes the supplied format; it is an example, not a universal standard for every precision handle.
When comparing a kit or replacement pack, verify:
- the drive profile and exact size;
- the shank cross-section or interface (such as the stated C4 format);
- the bit length and how deeply it reaches the screw;
- whether the handle’s retention system accepts that bit.
A reader question about the “hex shaft” of small bits illustrates the distinction: the hexagonal-looking portion that locks into a handle is not the same thing as the working profile at the tip. Confirm both measurements from the manufacturer’s specification.

What different precision kits actually include
Assortments vary, so compare contents instead of judging a set by its bit count. The ARCTIC Precision Screwdriver Toolkit lists Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, hex, pentalobe, tri-point, Pozidriv and JIS families. Xiaomi’s MJJXLSD002QW specification lists Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, pentalobe, hex, W-type, U-type, tri-angle and tri-wing, and identifies the C4 × 28 mm format. The difference matters if your work includes JIS, Pozidriv or one of the specialty shapes.

A safe procedure for using a precision bit
- Disconnect power. For electronics, shut down and unplug the equipment; remove a battery only when the manufacturer’s service procedure allows it.
- Seat the bit vertically. Keep the handle aligned with the screw axis so the driving faces contact evenly.
- Start with low torque. Turn slowly while maintaining downward pressure sufficient to keep the bit seated, not enough to crush the surrounding material.
- Pause at the first slip. Check profile, size, depth and screw condition before trying again.
- Store bits by marking. Return each bit to its labeled position so a near-match is not selected later.
Magnetic retention can help hold a tiny screw, but it does not correct a wrong profile or size. Likewise, extra force cannot make a standard Torx fit a security Torx screw with a center pin.
Troubleshooting common failures
The bit spins in the recess
Stop turning. The usual causes are an incorrect profile, an undersized tip, poor seating or a damaged screw head. Clean the recess, inspect it under magnification, and test the next correctly identified size without forcing it.

Check for a center pin, debris or a bit that is too large. A security Torx screw needs a hollow bit; a standard Torx tip will stop against the pin.

A cross bit fits but slips immediately
Re-evaluate Phillips versus JIS versus Pozidriv. Similar appearance does not establish interchangeability, and the documented geometry differences can prevent full contact.
The tip fits the screw but not the handle
Compare the shank shape and length with the handle specification. The Xiaomi C4 × 28 mm example shows why a tip-profile match alone is insufficient.
The screw head is already rounded
Do not keep cycling through random bits. Further slipping removes more material. Stop, document the original profile and use a controlled extraction method suited to the damaged fastener.
Buying checklist for a precision screwdriver bit kit
- Identify the profiles used in your actual work rather than buying every possible family.
- Check the exact size markings supplied for each family.
- Include security versions if your screws have center pins.
- Add JIS or Pozidriv only when the corresponding recesses are part of your work; neither should be treated as a generic Phillips replacement.
- Confirm the bit shank, length and retention interface with your handle.
- Prefer clearly marked storage so small sizes can be selected without guesswork.
The right kit is the one whose profiles, sizes and interface match your screws and handle. A broader assortment can be useful, but additional shapes do not compensate for missing documentation or poor fit.
