In NYT Connections, the colors rank groups by their intended difficulty: yellow is easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple as the trickiest. The colors are a guide, not a promise about which group you will solve first or find hardest. Category styles and your own knowledge can change how a group feels.
What each Connections color means
The New York Times Help Center says each group receives one of four colors, with yellow designated easiest and purple trickiest. Connections editor Wyna Liu has also described yellow as the most straightforward. The middle colors indicate the steps between those two ends of the intended difficulty scale.
| Color | Intended difficulty | Common category style |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Easiest | Often a relatively direct connection, such as synonyms or things someone might bring to the beach. |
| Green | Second easiest | No fixed construction is established; it may still use an accessible type of grouping. |
| Blue | Second trickiest | May draw on more specialized trivia, such as movies or particular bands. |
| Purple | Trickiest | Often relies on wordplay, such as words that share an ending or homophones. |
The order and examples come from the NYT Help Center and Liu’s November 28, 2024 interview with The Atlantic. The category descriptions are tendencies, not formal rules for every puzzle. Liu gave examples for these styles but did not define a guaranteed construction for each color.
It helps to keep the two comparison axes separate. The first is intended difficulty: the four labels make a ranked scale from yellow through purple. The second is the kind of connection a category might use: a relatively direct grouping, specialized trivia, or wordplay. The examples can help you think about a set, but they do not turn the colors into four interchangeable modes or a rigid classification system.

Why yellow and green often feel more direct
Yellow is the clearest signal that a category is intended to be comparatively straightforward. Liu’s examples of yellow and green category types include familiar, accessible relationships: a set of synonyms or items a person might bring to the beach. That does not mean every word will look obvious at first. A word can fit more than one plausible group, and the intended connection may only become clear after you rule out other possibilities.
Green sits immediately above yellow in the official difficulty ranking. It is useful to read that as a relative placement, not as a recipe: the sources do not establish that green always means synonyms, a particular subject, or any other single category format. Liu mentions yellow and green together when discussing accessible category types, but she does not give green its own fixed formula. So if you are trying to decide whether a group “should” be green based on its topic, there is no guaranteed rule to apply.
In practice, a familiar-looking connection is only a candidate. Four words may seem to share a broad theme, yet the puzzle’s intended group may depend on a narrower relationship. The color ranking can tell you how the editors place a category in the intended difficulty order, but it cannot tell you which of several possible associations is correct. That distinction matters especially when words have overlapping meanings or uses.
Why blue may be trivia and purple may be wordplay
Blue: potentially specialized knowledge
Liu characterizes blue as trivia that can be more specialized than ordinary definitions, with examples such as movies or certain bands. If you do not recognize the relevant titles, names, or cultural references, that group can feel harder than its position in the intended ranking suggests. Liu explicitly notes that blue is sometimes the hardest category for a solver.
That observation is a useful reminder not to interpret the blue label as an assurance that the category will be easy for you. Specialized trivia may be straightforward to a person who recognizes the subject and difficult to someone who does not. The source gives movies and particular bands as examples, not as an exhaustive list of possible blue topics. It also does not say every category involving a subject or fact-based connection must be blue.

Purple: a connection beyond literal meaning
Purple is the wordplay-oriented group in Liu’s description. The words may connect because they share an ending, sound alike as homophones, or participate in another language-based pattern, rather than because their dictionary definitions belong together. When four words seem unrelated by meaning, consider whether a sound, spelling, or shared word fragment links them.
Liu describes the purple group as words not defined by their literal meanings, and gives shared endings and homophones as examples. That explanation is a helpful lens for a puzzling set: a connection may be visible in how the words look or sound rather than in what they mean. Still, “wordplay” is a broad description, not a promise that every purple group uses one particular trick. The cited examples illustrate possibilities rather than a complete inventory of purple constructions.

These clues can help guide your thinking, but color does not reveal a complete solving rule. Not every blue group must be trivia, and not every purple group must use the same kind of wordplay. A category’s intended color and its construction are related clues, not a formula that lets you identify the answer without checking the words.
Why the hardest color may not feel hardest to you
The color expresses intended or editorial difficulty; your experience depends on what you know and which associations you notice. A movie-focused blue group may be quick for someone who knows the films and opaque for someone who does not. A purple wordplay pattern may click immediately for one player and remain hidden for another.
Liu told The Atlantic that difficulty can be subjective and that puzzle testers sometimes give the same board a wide range of ratings. She described a tester process that asks participants to rate difficulty on a one-to-five scale, but no resulting numeric statistic for the color-to-difficulty mapping is established in that account. The practical takeaway is simple: use colors to understand the editors’ intended ranking, not to judge your own skill or predict your personal solving order.

This distinction answers a common question: “If purple is the trickiest, why did blue feel harder today?” The short answer is that the color names an intended place in the ranking, while personal difficulty also depends on familiarity with the subject, recognition of a pattern, and which plausible interpretations stand out to you. Liu specifically says blue is sometimes the hardest category. That is not a contradiction in the scale; it is an example of intended difficulty and individual experience being different measures.

There is no published numeric statistic in the cited material that quantifies how often one color is solved first or how much harder purple is than yellow. The one-to-five scale Liu mentions is part of the tester process, not a reported result that establishes a universal score or a numerical gap between colors. It is more accurate to describe the official order and acknowledge that players’ experiences vary than to attach unsupported percentages or point differences to the colors.
How the color order fits the puzzle’s design
Connections presents 16 words and asks you to identify four groups of four. The Help Center says each puzzle has one solution, while also noting that the words are designed so they could fit multiple categories. That overlap is intentional: a word may suggest a plausible connection that is not the group the puzzle is using.
This is why a group can feel difficult even when its color indicates an easier intended tier. A tempting near-match may distract from the actual set, while solving another group can remove possibilities and make the remaining pattern easier to see. The color labels describe relative category difficulty; they do not remove ambiguity from the board or dictate the order in which you must solve it.
The combination of one solution and overlapping possible associations is important. “One solution” does not mean that every word has only one imaginable relationship to the other words. The Help Center’s explanation is that words can fit multiple categories; the puzzle’s intended answer is the particular set of four groups. A plausible theory can therefore be wrong without the color system being inconsistent. You still have to test whether all four words fit the same intended category and whether the rest of the board supports that interpretation.

When another group is identified, the remaining words may become easier to interpret because some competing possibilities have been removed. That is a consequence of the board’s structure, not a guarantee that the puzzle will always unfold in a particular order. The NYT Help Center says each puzzle has one solution, but it does not say players have to uncover the groups in color order. The colors describe intended difficulty, while the available path through a particular board depends on the words and the associations you notice.
A quick way to use the colors while solving
- Start with the intended scale: yellow is the easiest tier, then green, blue, and purple. Treat this as context about intended difficulty rather than a sequence you must follow.
- Look for direct relationships first: for a possible yellow or green group, test familiar links such as synonyms or items in a shared everyday setting. Liu’s examples make these useful possibilities, not guaranteed answers.
- Consider knowledge-based connections: if a set seems tied to movies, bands, or another subject area, it may fit the kind of specialized trivia Liu associates with blue. Ask whether the connection depends on recognizing a specific subject rather than on ordinary definitions.
- Test form and sound when meanings do not align: for a possible purple group, look for common endings, homophones, or another wordplay pattern. The words may be linked by how they sound or are written rather than by literal meaning.
- Keep alternatives open: because words can appear to fit multiple categories, do not treat a color expectation as proof. Reassess a theory when the other words on the board point elsewhere.
- Separate a category clue from a confidence claim: recognizing a possible wordplay or trivia pattern does not establish that the group is correct. Check that the proposed four words make a coherent set and consider whether another plausible grouping better fits the whole board.
- Let the board revise your first impression: the Help Center says the words are designed to allow multiple possible category associations, even though each puzzle has one solution. If a tempting grouping leaves a confusing remainder, reconsider it rather than assuming the color ranking will resolve the conflict.
These are ways to interpret the clues, not a required solving sequence. You can submit a group in any order; the colors communicate the intended difficulty ranking rather than a prescribed order of play. They can help set expectations, but they cannot confirm a proposed group or guarantee that a category will feel as easy or hard to you as its label suggests.
What the colors do—and do not—tell you
- They do tell you the official intended order from easiest to trickiest: yellow, green, blue, purple.
- They can suggest common category approaches: accessible groupings for yellow or green, specialized trivia for blue, and wordplay for purple.
- They do not guarantee that a particular group will feel easy or hard to you.
- They do not define a rigid formula that every category of each color must follow.
- They do not require you to solve groups from yellow through purple.
- They do not provide a numerical estimate of how much harder one color is than another in the sources cited here.

Does green always mean synonyms or an everyday category?
No fixed green construction is established in the cited sources. Liu gives accessible category types, including synonyms and things someone might bring to the beach, as examples involving yellow and green, but she does not say that green always uses one specific format.
Does blue always mean movies or bands?
No. Movies and particular bands are examples of the more specialized trivia Liu associates with blue. They are tendencies and examples, not a formal rule that every blue group must use a trivia topic.
What does purple mean in Connections?
Purple is the wordplay-oriented category in Liu’s description. Possible patterns include words that share an ending or homophones, where the link is about spelling or sound rather than literal definitions. Those are examples, not an exhaustive definition.
Recommended Free Tools
Do you have to solve the colors in order?
No. The colors rank intended difficulty; they do not prescribe a solving order. The Help Center describes a puzzle of 16 words arranged into four groups of four, with one solution, and the colors do not require you to find groups from yellow through purple.
Why can words seem to fit more than one Connections category?
That overlap is intentional. The NYT Help Center says the words are designed so they could fit multiple categories, even though each puzzle has one solution. A plausible association is not necessarily the intended grouping, so check how the proposed set fits with the rest of the board.
Is there a published score showing how difficult each color is?
The cited research identifies no published numeric statistic for the color-to-difficulty mapping. Liu describes testers rating puzzle difficulty on a one-to-five scale, but that does not establish a reported score or numerical gap for each color.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: NYT Connections uses yellow for the easiest intended category, followed by green, blue, and purple as the trickiest. Yellow and green may use accessible groupings, blue may draw on specialized trivia, and purple often involves wordplay—but these are patterns, not rules. Your knowledge and the board’s intentional overlap can make any category feel harder, and you can solve the groups in any order.
