In NYT Connections, colors are difficulty cues for the four completed groups. The New York Times Help Center identifies yellow as the easiest category and purple as the trickiest. It names green and blue as the other colors, but does not publish a fixed order between them or assign either color to a permanent connection type. The colors therefore tell you about relative category difficulty, not whether a group is made of synonyms, abbreviations, wordplay or another specific kind of relationship.
The same official explanation describes a 16-word board that must be divided into four groups of four, with one intended solution. It also documents a personal mistake histogram and optional Connections Bot analysis, but it does not fully define the live game’s mistake allowance. That distinction matters if you are trying to work out how many wrong guesses you can make.
The official meaning of each Connections color
The Help Center’s wording is deliberately limited: each solved group receives one of four colors, and the colors indicate how difficult the category is considered. Here is what is established, and what is not.

| Yellow | The easiest category in that puzzle. | It is not officially defined as a particular word relationship, such as synonyms or common nouns. |
| Green | One of the four category colors, positioned somewhere between the endpoints in the game’s difficulty scheme. | The reviewed help article does not state whether green is easier or harder than blue. |
| Blue | One of the four category colors, positioned somewhere between the endpoints in the game’s difficulty scheme. | The reviewed help article does not state whether blue is easier or harder than green. |
| Purple | The trickiest category in that puzzle. | It is not officially defined as a permanent wordplay, spelling or pop-culture category. |
The New York Times states: "Each group is assigned a color (Yellow, Green, Blue, or Purple), with Yellow being the easiest category and Purple being the trickiest." That is the reliable answer to the color question. Guides that present a precise yellow-to-green-to-blue-to-purple ranking as an explicit quotation from the Help Center go beyond what that page says.

A category’s color is attached to the group after the puzzle recognizes the completed set. It is a feedback label, not a hint that appears as a permanent legend telling you what kind of connection to search for. Before solving, you should treat all four groups as possible themes rather than assuming, for example, that a purple set must use a certain style of clue.
How the Connections board works
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four sets of four. A valid solution uses every word exactly once. The New York Times Help Center says that every puzzle has exactly one solution, while also making the board difficult by including words that can plausibly fit more than one category.
That design explains why a group that looks obvious may still be wrong. A word can share a surface relationship with several other entries, but only one arrangement satisfies all four intended themes at the same time. The color you eventually see belongs to the completed category; it does not certify that every initially plausible relationship was a deliberate clue.
Why apparent overlaps are intentional
Suppose four words seem to be synonyms and a fifth word appears to fit two of them through a different meaning. That ambiguity is part of the puzzle rather than evidence that the color system is inconsistent. You must test a proposed set against the remaining 12 words and ask whether the other three groups can still be formed cleanly.
Because the official explanation promises one solution, a nearly convincing set is a reason to inspect the alternatives, not a reason to assign a color mentally. The difficulty label is applied to the category that the game accepts, not to every connection a player notices while thinking.
What the colors do not tell you
They do not identify a fixed category type
The Help Center does not say that yellow always means synonyms, green always means names, blue always means abbreviations, or purple always means wordplay. A category can be difficult for many reasons: unusual knowledge, a less familiar meaning of a word, a misleading decoy, or several overlapping interpretations. None of those mechanisms is tied officially to one color.

They do not provide a published green-versus-blue ranking
Yellow and purple are the only endpoints explicitly described in the cited guidance. Green and blue are named, but their relative order is not defined there. A particular day’s blue group may feel easier to an individual player than that day’s green group, and the help article supplies no rule that would make such a reaction incorrect.

They are not a player score
The color belongs to the category, whereas your result depends on how you approached the board. Solving a purple category quickly does not change its label, and taking several attempts to spot a yellow category does not turn it into a harder color. The label describes the puzzle’s category classification, not your personal speed or skill.
How many mistakes can you make?
This is the part of the question for which the official help page is less complete. It documents a Mistake Histogram that shows a player’s puzzle results across zero, one, two, three and four mistakes. That is a record of results, not a stated rule that every live puzzle permits exactly four wrong submissions.
The reviewed Help Center article does not specify the number of incorrect selections allowed in an active game, the precise effect of submitting a wrong set, or the condition that ends a puzzle after errors. Consequently, an exact live-game limit cannot be established from that source alone. Be wary of articles that turn the histogram’s zero-to-four range into an unconditional claim about the current game interface.
How to interpret the histogram
The histogram is useful for reviewing your own history. It groups completed-puzzle outcomes by the number of mistakes associated with each result, allowing you to see whether your recent solves usually require no errors or several attempts. It is not described as a population survey, and the Help Center gives no overall percentage for how often all players make a particular number of mistakes.

What to do when the interface shows a warning
If the live game displays its own warning, counter or end-of-game message, follow that current on-screen information for the session you are playing. Interface wording can be more specific than a general help article. The Help Center page reviewed here should be treated as confirmation that mistake results are tracked, not as a complete technical specification of every live-game state.
Connections Bot: a different kind of difficulty information
Connections Bot provides analysis after you play, but its reports should not be confused with the four group colors. According to the Help Center, the Bot can show how difficult that day’s puzzle was for other players, compare your performance with theirs, indicate how hard individual categories were to find, show the order in which people solved them, summarize common mistakes and break down guesses.
Those are player-based and puzzle-based statistics. They can add context to a purple category that felt unusually obscure or to a yellow category that delayed you, but they do not change the category’s assigned color or create a new color ranking. The Help Center lists Connections Bot eligibility for All Access, Home Delivery and Games subscribers.
Where to play and when a new puzzle appears
The Help Center says Connections is free to play on New York Times platforms. It lists the Games app, the NYT Connections website, NYTimes.com/theathletic and the News app as access points. The daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s timezone, so two people in different locations may receive the next board at different UTC times.
Signing in to an NYT account is recommended if you want progress retained across devices. Registration is not required to play, according to the same help page. Availability, account features and subscription eligibility can change, so use the current in-product message or account page if it conflicts with an older description.
How to use the color information while solving
Colors are most useful as a post-solve learning signal and as a way to calibrate expectations, not as a shortcut to the answer. The following method keeps the official information separate from assumptions about category type.

1. Search for strong relationships before guessing
Start by grouping words that share a specific, defensible relationship. A broad association such as “things connected with travel” is weaker than a relationship that explains why all four entries belong together and excludes nearby decoys. Since words can fit multiple categories, write down alternative interpretations instead of committing to the first attractive set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Check the remaining board
Remove a proposed group mentally and inspect the other 12 words. If the leftovers cannot form three coherent groups, revisit the first set. The one-solution rule makes the whole board a constraint system: a locally plausible group is useful only when it allows a complete four-by-four partition.
3. Treat an accepted color as feedback
After submission, note the color assigned to the group and what made that category difficult or easy for you. Yellow and purple provide the clearest endpoint signals because the Help Center defines them. For green and blue, record the actual experience without claiming that one is universally harder than the other.
4. Use mistakes to improve process, not to infer hidden rules
A wrong submission can reveal that two meanings overlapped or that a decoy was stronger than expected. Review which assumption caused the error. Do not infer from one failed guess that a color represents a specific word class, and do not assume the histogram proves a fixed number of remaining attempts.
5. Compare with Bot analysis when eligible
If your account includes Connections Bot, use its category and guess breakdown to see whether the challenge was widespread or mainly personal. A category that many players found late may explain a purple label more convincingly than your own first impression, while a category you missed alone may identify a vocabulary or pattern-recognition gap to practice.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“Purple always means wordplay.”
Not according to the cited official guidance. Purple is defined as the trickiest category, but no permanent connection mechanism is assigned to it.

“Blue is officially harder than green.”
The reviewed Help Center page does not establish that order. It identifies both as category colors without defining their relative difficulty.
“The mistake histogram proves four mistakes are allowed.”
No. The graph records personal results from zero through four mistakes. The article does not state the active game’s allowance or end condition.
“A color tells me which words belong together before I solve them.”
No. The color is attached to a completed group as a difficulty cue. It is not presented as a pre-solve category key.
“A hard experience means the category should have a harder color.”
Not necessarily. The labels describe the game’s category classification, while your experience reflects your knowledge, strategy and the particular decoys on that board.
A precise takeaway for players
- Use yellow as the official easiest-category endpoint and purple as the official trickiest-category endpoint.
- Do not assign a permanent meaning or a guaranteed middle ranking to green and blue.
- Expect deliberate overlap: multiple words may appear to fit more than one theme even though the puzzle has one intended solution.
- Read the Mistake Histogram as a record of your own zero-to-four-mistake results, not as a complete statement of the live mistake limit.
- Use Connections Bot, when eligible, for player comparisons, category difficulty, solve order, common mistakes and guess analysis.
