“Swap” can mean changing which physical speaker plays the left or right stereo channel, switching between stereo and same-audio playback, or selecting a speaker pair. The exact function depends on the model. On Yamaha’s NX-70A, L/R SWAP changes the channel assignments between the primary and secondary speakers; it does not move or alter the speakers themselves.
Identify what the control changes before using it
Speaker controls described as “swap” are not a standardized feature. Check the exact speaker or receiver model and its manual, then determine which of these functions applies:
- Left/right channel assignment: Sends the left and right stereo channels to the opposite physical speakers. The Yamaha NX-70A is one example.
- Playback mode: A linked pair may play the same audio from both speakers or separate left and right channels in stereo. Sony’s documented Speaker Add function offers double and stereo modes on supported models; some supported models can also switch which unit carries each channel.
- Speaker-pair selection: A receiver or selector can turn speaker groups on or off, or select outputs such as front A, B, or A+B. That selects or routes outputs; it does not necessarily swap left and right channels.
- Sound or playback adjustment: Controls such as volume, bass, source, power, standby, and Bluetooth operate the system rather than changing channel assignments. Klipsch ProMedia 2.0 is one example.
Set the left/right assignment on a Yamaha NX-70A
The NX-70A’s factory arrangement assigns the primary speaker to the left channel and the secondary speaker to the right. Its rear-panel L/R SWAP button reverses those assignments.

- Turn the product on.
- Press the L/R SWAP button on the rear of the primary speaker.
- Check the primary speaker’s front display. “Speaker R” means the primary is assigned to the right channel and the secondary is automatically assigned left.
- To restore the factory assignment, press the button again. “Speaker L” means the primary is assigned left.
Yamaha also says the setting can be changed in the MusicCast Controller app during or after initial setup. If you swap the speakers or change their positions, Yamaha recommends running YPAO through the app: Yamaha NX-70A manual: Swapping the left and right speakers.

Verify the result and calibrate if needed
After changing a left/right assignment, play audio with clear left/right information or use a suitable test signal. Confirm that each channel comes from the intended side. On the NX-70A, also check the primary speaker’s display for “Speaker L” or “Speaker R.” If you have moved or swapped the NX-70A speakers, follow Yamaha’s YPAO recommendation in the MusicCast Controller app. Do not assume another manufacturer uses the same button, app, or calibration process.
Do not confuse channel swapping with selecting speaker pairs
A speaker selector’s buttons may simply turn pairs on and off. For example, the OEM Systems SW-4SPKR manual describes individual buttons for selecting up to four pairs of 8-ohm speakers. It calls for one impedance-matching volume control per pair when individual pair volume is wanted. Follow the selector’s own manual and the amplifier’s guidance for wiring and protection; the NX-70A procedure does not apply to a selector.

Does swapping improve sound quality?
Swapping can correct a left/right assignment when the physical speaker positions do not match the channel routing. It is a configuration change, not an inherent sound-quality upgrade. The appropriate setup depends on the intended speaker positions, the audio signal, and the model’s available modes.
