Stock order types tell a broker how to buy or sell, but each makes a different trade-off. A market order emphasizes getting an execution at the best available price; a limit order sets the worst price you will accept but may never fill; and a stop-loss (usually called a stop order) uses a trigger that becomes a market order, so its stop price is not a guaranteed sale price.

The central trade-off: execution or price control

Every order instruction answers two questions: how strongly do you want the trade to happen, and how much control do you need over the execution price? Instructions that prioritize a prompt execution can expose you to an unexpected price. Instructions that constrain price can leave the order unfilled or only partly filled.

Order type What it prioritizes Price control Main failure or risk
Market Execution at the best available price None beyond the available market The fill can differ from the displayed or last-traded price; a large order can fill at several prices
Limit A specified price boundary Buy only at the limit or lower; sell only at the limit or higher The order may not execute, or may receive only a partial fill
Stop (stop-loss) Activating an order after a trigger price is reached The stop price does not cap the execution price After triggering, it is a market order and can fill far from the stop price
Stop-limit Activating a price-constrained order A limit applies after the stop trigger The order can remain unfilled if the market moves past the limit

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance describes a market order as “an order to buy or sell a stock at the best available price.” That wording is important: “best available” is not the same as a fixed quote or a guaranteed price.

How a market order works

What you are instructing

A market order tells your broker to seek an execution promptly at prices available in the market. You are not specifying the maximum price for a purchase or the minimum price for a sale.

Why the displayed price can change

A quote or last-traded price is a snapshot. Your broker must route the order, and the market can move while that happens. Available shares at the best price may be taken by other orders before yours arrives. The execution can therefore be above or below the price you saw when you clicked submit.

Why one order can have several prices

If your order is larger than the shares available at the best quoted level, it can be matched against multiple price levels. For example, a hypothetical 1,000-share market buy might consume the available shares at one price and then continue at higher prices. The broker’s confirmation can show several fills that together make up the order.

When the risk matters most

  • Prices are moving rapidly or the stock has limited trading activity.
  • Your order is large relative to the available quoted shares.
  • You are trading outside the regular session and your broker offers a different set of venues or restrictions.
  • You need a specific maximum purchase price or minimum sale price rather than simply an execution.

A market order can be reasonable when completing the trade is more important than knowing the exact price in advance, but the order type itself does not remove price uncertainty.

How a limit order works

Buy limits and sell limits

A buy limit sets the highest price you are willing to pay. It can execute at the limit price or lower. A sell limit sets the lowest price you are willing to accept. It can execute at the limit price or higher.

Suppose, as a hypothetical illustration, that you will pay no more than $10 for a share. A buy limit of $10 makes the order eligible when the market can sell to you at $10 or less. If sellers are not available at an eligible price, the order waits rather than paying more.

Why a limit is not a promise of a fill

The SEC’s plain-language statement is direct: “A limit order is not guaranteed to execute.” A stock can touch your limit briefly without your order being filled. Other orders may already be ahead of yours in the queue, the available size may be too small, or the price may move away before your order reaches the market. The order can also receive only part of the requested quantity.

What a limit order protects—and what it does not

  • It protects a buyer from paying above the stated limit.
  • It protects a seller from accepting below the stated limit.
  • It does not guarantee that a trade will occur.
  • It does not guarantee a complete fill when only some shares are available.
  • It does not guarantee that the limit itself will be the execution price; an eligible order can receive a better price.

Use the broker’s order preview to check whether the instruction is a buy or sell limit, the quantity, and the time-in-force choice. Those labels and available durations differ among firms.

What “stop-loss” really means

The stop price is a trigger, not a sale price

“Stop-loss” is commonly another name for a stop order. A stop order contains a stop price. When the applicable trigger condition is reached, the stop order becomes a market order. The SEC summarizes the mechanism this way: “The stop price is a trigger that causes the stop order to become a market order.”

Once triggered, the order seeks the best available price just like any other market order. Your final execution can be above or below the stop price, sometimes by a substantial amount.

Typical sell-stop and buy-stop placement

  • A sell stop is generally placed below the current market price for shares you own. It is intended to activate if the price moves down to the stop level.
  • A buy stop is generally placed above the current market price for a short position. It is intended to activate if the price moves up to the stop level.

These are descriptions of common use, not a recommendation for any particular security or account.

Why a stop can fill at a very different price

Fast markets can move through several price levels before available liquidity reaches your order. A stock can also open after a gap, with the next available trades far from the prior session’s price. In either case, the stop activates but does not set a floor for a sell or a ceiling for a buy.

A short-lived move can trigger the order even if the stock later rebounds. Trigger standards, eligible sessions, and the market data used by a firm can vary, so read your broker’s stop-order disclosure instead of assuming every platform behaves identically.

A hypothetical sequence

  1. You hold shares trading near $55 and enter a sell stop with a $50 stop price.
  2. The broker’s applicable trigger condition is met at $50.
  3. The instruction converts to a market sell order.
  4. If the next available buyers are at $48, $47, or another level, the execution can occur there rather than at $50.

The example illustrates the trigger-versus-execution distinction; it is not a prediction of how a real stock will trade.

Stop-limit and trailing-stop orders

Stop-limit

A stop-limit order combines a stop trigger with a limit order. When the stop condition is reached, the order changes into a limit order instead of a market order. This gives you a price boundary after activation, but it introduces the possibility of no execution.

For a sell stop-limit, the stop activates the order and the sell limit specifies the lowest acceptable price. If the market falls below that limit before a buyer is available, the order can remain open while the position is still exposed to further losses. A buy stop-limit can likewise fail to fill if the market rises above its permitted limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trailing stop

A trailing stop adjusts its trigger as the market moves favorably by a chosen dollar amount or percentage. For a long position, the trigger generally follows upward moves and stays at its last level when the price moves adversely; for a short position, the direction is reversed. After triggering, the order type and execution behavior depend on the broker’s implementation. A trailing distance does not guarantee a particular fill price.

How your broker gets the order to the market

Submitting an order in an app is not the same as an immediate exchange execution. The broker routes the instruction to a trading venue or other execution destination, and the order takes time to process. Route selection, available liquidity, changing prices, and the venue’s rules can all affect the result.

Order menus also vary. One firm may offer a particular stop or trailing instruction while another does not. Firms can define when a stop is considered triggered, which sessions accept it, and how long an unfilled order remains active. The SEC bulletins describe staff views and educational information, not a single set of Commission rules that forces every broker to offer identical choices.

A practical way to choose an order instruction

There is no universally best order type. Match the instruction to the risk you are more able to accept: an uncertain price, or an uncertain execution.

If your overriding concern is… The mechanic that addresses it What you must accept
Getting out or in without waiting for a quoted price Market order The fill can differ from the quote and can span multiple prices
Never paying above a purchase ceiling Buy limit The order may not fill or may fill only partly
Never selling below a stated floor Sell limit The position may remain open if buyers are unavailable
Activating an exit after a downward move Sell stop Activation does not guarantee the stop price; a gap can produce a lower fill
Activating an entry or short-position exit after an upward move Buy stop Activation does not guarantee the stop price; a fast rise can produce a higher fill
Keeping a price boundary after a trigger Stop-limit The order can fail to execute after activation

This framework explains mechanics rather than deciding what is suitable for your financial situation. Position size, liquidity, tax considerations, and your investment plan require separate decisions.

Submitting an order: a broker-neutral checklist

Exact button names differ, but most brokerage order tickets ask for the same core information.

  1. Open the security’s order ticket. Confirm the symbol, company, and whether you are buying or selling.
  2. Enter the quantity. Check whether the ticket permits whole shares, fractional shares, or only one of those choices.
  3. Select the order type. Choose market, limit, stop, stop-limit, or a trailing instruction only if your broker supports it for that security and session.
  4. Enter the required price fields. A limit order needs a limit price; a stop order needs a stop price; a stop-limit order needs both. Review the direction of each price relative to the current market.
  5. Choose the duration and session. The available time-in-force choices and extended-hours rules are broker-specific. Do not assume an order remains active indefinitely.
  6. Read the preview. Verify the estimated value, order type, trigger and limit fields, quantity, and any warnings about market data or execution.
  7. Submit and confirm. A confirmation that the broker accepted the order is not necessarily confirmation that it executed.
  8. Monitor status. Look for pending, partially filled, filled, canceled, or rejected status and check any remaining quantity before placing another order.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing a stop with a limit

A stop price starts the next order; it does not set the final execution price. If a price boundary is essential, only a limit-based instruction supplies that boundary—and it can leave you unfilled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a price touch guarantees a fill

For a limit order, a momentary trade at the limit does not prove that your order had priority or enough available quantity. Queue position, liquidity, and order terms still matter.

Using a market order because the quote looks stable

The quote can change before routing and execution. In a thin or fast market, the difference can be meaningful, and a large order can consume several price levels.

Setting a stop without considering volatility

A brief price swing can trigger a stop before a later rebound. Review the broker’s trigger standard and the security’s trading conditions; do not treat the stop as an automatic guarantee against loss.

Ignoring an unfilled stop-limit

After activation, a stop-limit is simply a limit order. If the market has moved beyond its permitted price, the position may still be open. Check the order status rather than assuming the stop completed the sale or purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Entering a second order after a partial fill

Check the executed quantity and remaining quantity first. Placing another order without checking can create a larger position or a larger sale than intended.

What these order types do not guarantee

  • A market order does not guarantee the displayed price, the last-traded price, or a single-price fill.
  • A limit order does not guarantee execution, a complete fill, or execution at the exact limit.
  • A stop order does not guarantee that the stop price will be the sale or purchase price.
  • A stop-limit order does not guarantee execution after its trigger.
  • A trailing stop does not guarantee a particular trigger or fill across every broker and venue.

For the most current definitions and examples, consult the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s Investor.gov bulletins on order types and stop orders, both updated August 18, 2026. Investor.gov’s execution guidance also explains that routing and execution take time. FINRA investor education provides additional discussion of limit and stop-order risks. These materials address stock orders placed through brokerage firms; your firm’s agreement and order disclosures control the options available in your account.
