Social media terminology covers platform features, content formats, performance measures and marketing concepts. The clearest way to use the terms is to distinguish what a platform does from how a marketer measures or plans activity. For example, reach counts unique people exposed to content; impressions count how many times it was displayed.
This glossary follows Buffer’s social media terms reference. Platform labels and slang can change, so check current platform documentation when a feature name or definition needs to be exact.
How platforms distribute content
Reach
Reach is the number of unique people who were exposed to a piece of content. It describes the size of the audience reached, not the total number of displays.
Impressions
Impressions are the number of times content was displayed. One person may generate multiple impressions by seeing the same post more than once, so impressions can exceed reach.

Algorithm
An algorithm is a set of rules or calculations a platform uses to decide what content to show and in what order. The exact systems and ranking factors vary by platform and may change over time.
Feed
A feed is the stream of posts and other content a user sees in an app or on a website. Depending on the platform, it may include content from accounts the person follows as well as recommended posts.
Creating and publishing content
Content
Content is material published or shared on a social platform, such as text, an image, a video, a story or a link. In marketing, the term can also include material created to inform, entertain or prompt an audience to take an action.

Post
A post is a piece of content published to a social account. Its format and available features depend on the platform.
Stories
Stories are short-form posts displayed in a separate, often full-screen format. Their availability, display duration and interaction features depend on the platform, so check its current documentation for specifics.
Hashtag
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the hash symbol (#), used by some platforms to label or group content. How hashtags affect discovery varies by platform.

Scheduling
Scheduling means setting a post to publish at a chosen future time instead of publishing it immediately. A management tool can help organize this workflow, but it is optional: understanding social media terminology does not require a particular product. Buffer describes its software as a way for small businesses to schedule posts, analyze results and engage with their community; see its product overview for details.
Understanding audience response and performance
Engagement
Engagement refers to interactions people have with content. Depending on the platform and format, these may include likes, comments, shares, saves or other actions.
Engagement rate
Engagement rate relates interactions to a comparison base, such as an audience size or the content’s exposure. There is no single calculation prescribed by Buffer’s glossary, so a reported rate should state what interactions were counted and what denominator was used.

Analytics
Analytics is the collection and interpretation of data about social activity. It can help answer questions such as how content performed, who it reached or which formats prompted interaction. The metric and time period matter: a number without its definition and context can be misleading.
Return on investment (ROI)
ROI is a way to assess the value produced by an investment in relation to its cost. In social marketing, the calculation depends on which outcomes and costs are included—for example, whether the goal is sales, leads or another measurable result. State the method and assumptions when presenting ROI.

Social media management
Social media management is the work of planning, publishing and overseeing activity across social accounts. It may involve coordinating a publishing schedule, responding to a community and reviewing performance. Tools can support those tasks, but the terminology describes the work rather than requiring a specific service.
Campaign
A campaign is a coordinated set of marketing activities organized around a goal, message or period of time. On social media, it may involve multiple posts or formats rather than a single publication.
Conversion
A conversion is an action that a business or organization wants someone to take, such as signing up or making a purchase. What qualifies as a conversion depends on the campaign’s goal; define it before evaluating results.
Using social media terms accurately
- Separate audience size from content displays: reach is unique people, while impressions are total displays.
- When giving an engagement rate, identify the interactions counted and the audience or exposure basis used.
- For analytics and ROI, state the goal, measurement period and calculation context rather than presenting a figure without its basis.
- Verify feature names, formats and slang against the platform’s current documentation when precision matters.
- Use a scheduling or management tool only if it suits your workflow; it is not a prerequisite for understanding or using these concepts.
Buffer’s glossary is an introductory reference rather than a regulatory or standards-body glossary. It is useful for orientation, while platform-specific definitions and current feature details should be checked with the relevant platform.
