A Samsung Galaxy model number identifies a product range and, often, a regional or carrier variant—not one unique phone. For example, Samsung uses SM-G988 for Galaxy S20 Ultra products and SM-G973 for Galaxy S10 products. The complete code, including its suffix, is what you need when checking network compatibility, buying a case, or ordering a replacement part. Your phone’s serial number identifies the individual device, while its 15-digit IMEI identifies the communications device itself.
What a Samsung Galaxy model number tells you
Think of the model number as a product-family and variant code. It groups phones built to the same basic design and specification, then can add letters or numbers for a market, carrier, network configuration, or other release variation. It is not a unique identity for your particular handset: many phones can share the same base model code.
Samsung’s support documentation gives two useful examples. SM-G988 is a base code shared by Galaxy S20 Ultra products, while SM-G973 is a base code shared by Galaxy S10 products. The same marketed Galaxy name can therefore appear with different complete codes, and two complete codes that look almost identical can still be intended for different markets or carriers.

Trimming the last letter to search for an accessory can lead you to a listing for a different network or regional version.

How to read a code such as SM-G988B
The SM- prefix
SM- is the Samsung model-code prefix shown in the company’s documented Galaxy examples. It tells you that the following characters belong to Samsung’s model-code system; it does not identify your phone’s serial number or IMEI.
The family or platform letter
The first character after the prefix is part of the family/platform portion of the code. Samsung’s official tables provide examples including:

These examples show how Samsung labels product platforms; they are not a promise that one letter has one permanent meaning in every generation. Samsung’s consumer support says model numbers can vary with release year, colour, carrier, and other factors. There is no single current, character-by-character decoder that safely explains every Galaxy code ever sold.

The digits following the family/platform letter distinguish a particular base design or generation within Samsung’s model-code system. They are useful for separating, for example, SM-G988 (Galaxy S20 Ultra) from SM-G981 (Galaxy S20 5G), but they are not a universal specification shorthand. Do not infer screen size, storage, processor, or camera capability from a digit alone. Confirm those details on the specification page for the exact regional model.
The trailing letter or group
A final letter, or a group of letters and numbers, can mark a regional or carrier-specific version. Samsung Knox documentation lists Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G variants as SM-G988B, SM-G988N, SM-G988U, and SM-G988W. The same documentation says that these additional letters and numbers denote carrier-specific models and identifies U in that table as a US carrier unified build.

The practical lesson is more reliable than trying to memorize every suffix: never discard it. A B, N, U, or W at the end can affect which network bands, SIM arrangement, firmware, services, or accessories apply. The meaning of a particular character can also change between generations, so treat a suffix as a complete-code component rather than a standalone translation.
What SM-S, SM-A, SM-G and SM-F mean
Readers often expect a simple dictionary in which every letter maps permanently to a marketing family. Samsung’s published examples support a more careful interpretation. The letter after SM- is part of a platform identifier, and the complete code is the authority for the exact device.

Samsung does not publish one universal table that assigns an identical meaning to every letter across all Galaxy generations. If a seller explains a suffix with a rule that conflicts with Samsung’s exact model listing, use Samsung’s listing and the code shown on your device.
Model number, serial number and IMEI are different
These three identifiers answer different questions. Confusing them can cause trouble when you contact support, report a lost phone, or check whether a part fits.

A model number can be shared by thousands of phones. A serial number is unique to one device, and the IMEI is the 15-digit network identifier. Dual-SIM phones can display more than one IMEI; record the one your carrier or support form requests.

Where to find your exact Galaxy model number
Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to About phone. Some older software labels this page About device.
- Read the field labelled Model number and copy every character, including the SM- prefix and any final letters or numbers.
This is the best place to start because it reports the code installed on the phone rather than relying on a remembered marketing name.
Use Samsung Members
- Open Samsung Members.
- Choose Get help.
- If the phone is registered, tap the device’s model number to view its details.
The wording and layout can vary with the app version and country, but the registered device panel is useful when the handset’s exterior label is worn.
Check the box or label
The original box normally prints the model code on its label. Older Galaxy devices may also print it on the back or beneath a removable battery. Do not open a sealed device just to look for a label; use Settings, Samsung Members, or the box instead.
Dial the identifier code
- Open the Phone app.
- Dial
*#06#. - Read the identifiers displayed by the device and copy them exactly.
Samsung documents this method for displaying the IMEI and related device details. The resulting screen is especially useful when you need the IMEI, but use the About phone page to confirm the model-number field itself.
Why the complete suffix matters for accessories and parts
A listing that says only “Galaxy S20” is not precise enough for a case, screen protector, replacement display, battery, or motherboard. Samsung’s Knox table demonstrates four Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G codes—B, N, U and W variants—that represent carrier or regional models. Those versions can differ in dimensions, button or antenna arrangements, radio support, firmware, SIM configuration, or the parts supplied to a service centre.

Before buying, record the full code from Settings > About phone, then compare it with the accessory or part listing. Verify the sales region and carrier as well. A case designed for a similarly named phone may have a camera opening or button position that does not match your device, even when the screen size appears identical.
- Match the full model code, not just “Galaxy S20,” “Galaxy A51,” or another family name.
- Check whether the listing names your sales region or carrier variant.
- For screen protectors and cases, compare the camera cut-out, dimensions and button layout.
- For internal parts, confirm the service-part number and regional compatibility with Samsung or an authorised repair provider.
- Keep the receipt and packaging until fit and function are confirmed.
How to compare two Galaxy variants before you buy
When two phones share a marketing name, compare them in this order:
- Exact model code: Write both complete codes, including suffixes.
- Sales region: Confirm where each version was originally sold. Imported stock can have different firmware or service eligibility.
- Carrier: Identify whether a suffix represents a carrier-specific build, such as the U variant described in Samsung Knox documentation.
- Network bands: Check the regional specification page for the LTE, 5G and other bands supported by that exact code. The model number alone does not list every band.
- SIM configuration: Verify physical-SIM and eSIM support, the number of SIM slots, and whether those features vary by region.
- Accessory fit: Confirm dimensions and camera/button layout against the exact model.
- Software and services: Check update availability, call features, recording rules and carrier services for the intended country.
Samsung’s published documents establish that model and carrier variations exist. They do not establish that every B, N, U or W version has the same bands or features, so those details must be confirmed on the specification page for the exact region.

Assuming the model number is unique
It is not. The model number applies to a range of products or a variant of that range. Use the serial number or IMEI when support asks for the individual handset.

Reading only the first four characters
SM-G988 and SM-G988B are not interchangeable for every purchase. The suffix can identify a carrier or regional version. Copy the complete code before searching.

Treating the letter as a permanent family dictionary
Samsung’s code conventions evolve. A letter that appears in one generation’s platform code does not guarantee the same hardware, release year, or market in another. Confirm the complete code in Samsung’s support or specification information.
Using the marketing name instead of the code
“Galaxy S20” may describe several products, including different 4G, 5G, Ultra, carrier and regional variants. Marketing names are helpful for a first search; they are not a final compatibility check.
Assuming an imported phone is identical
An imported phone can have a different carrier build, network-band set, SIM configuration, warranty territory or update schedule. Compare the model code and sales region before paying, especially when the price is substantially lower than local stock.
A reliable five-minute identification checklist
- Open Settings > About phone and copy the complete model number.
- Record the serial number separately if you are opening a repair or warranty case.
- Dial
*#06#and save the 15-digit IMEI securely; do not post it publicly. - Compare the full model code with Samsung’s regional product information and the seller’s listing.
- Check carrier, network bands, SIM configuration and accessory fit before purchase.
- If the code on the box and the code in Settings disagree, pause the transaction or support request and ask Samsung or the seller to explain the discrepancy.
What Samsung’s documented examples establish—and what they do not
Samsung Electronics Spain support documentation (2026) establishes SM-G988 as an example base code shared by Galaxy S20 Ultra products and SM-G973 as an example base code shared by Galaxy S10 products. Samsung Electronics Ireland support documentation (2026) distinguishes a model number from an 11-character serial number and a 15-digit IMEI, and describes where to find those identifiers. Samsung Knox documentation establishes the B, N, U and W Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G variants and explains that additional letters and numbers denote carrier-specific models, with U identified there as a US carrier unified build.
Those documents do not create a universal decoder for every character in every Galaxy generation. They also do not by themselves prove that two regional variants share the same network bands, warranty, SIM features or accessory dimensions. For those questions, use the exact model code, region and carrier information on the relevant Samsung specification or support page.
The practical answer
To identify a Samsung Galaxy accurately, find the model number in Settings > About phone, copy the entire code such as SM-G988B, and treat every suffix as significant. Use that code for accessories, parts, regional specifications and carrier checks. Use the 11-character serial number for the individual handset and the 15-digit IMEI for mobile-network identification. The letters and digits are useful clues, but the complete Samsung code—not a guessed letter-by-letter translation—is the dependable answer.
