Power-cord markings answer different questions: voltage and current ratings describe electrical limits, wire gauge identifies conductor size, type and jacket markings indicate construction or environment, and certification marks identify an evaluation or approval. Choose a cord by matching all of those details to its length, intended location, appliance load, and instructions—not by relying on one number or logo.

First, identify what kind of cord you are evaluating

“Power cord” can refer to several products, and the rules for one kind should not automatically be applied to another. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) defines an extension cord as a factory-assembled flexible cord with an attachment plug or current tap at one end and a cord connector at the other. Its extension-cord guidance does not cover detachable power-supply cords, appliance cords, power strips and taps, or adapter cords supplied with outdoor tools and yard equipment.

That distinction matters when reading a safety claim. A characteristic that CPSC identifies for extension cords is not, by itself, a complete guide to every detachable computer cable or appliance lead. For any product, start with its actual product category, the markings on the cord or tag, and the manufacturer’s instructions. The discussion below focuses primarily on extension cords, while explaining how to interpret the kinds of markings also found on flexible cords.

What the ratings and markings tell you

A cord’s surface or attached tag may carry multiple pieces of information. They are not interchangeable: a voltage rating is not a wire-gauge value, and an outdoor-use marking does not tell you how much current an appliance draws. UL’s wire-and-cable guidance says users should consult the markings and the applicable category guide to determine a product’s ratings and limitations.

Electrical ratings

The voltage rating identifies the voltage for which the cord is rated. A current or service rating gives another essential limit. Compare the cord’s stated ratings with the appliance’s requirements and follow both manufacturers’ instructions. Do not treat a cord as suitable merely because its plug fits the outlet: matching connector shape does not establish that its ratings, construction, length, or environment are appropriate.

For flexible cords in workplace contexts, OSHA says service ratings derive from the National Electrical Code and are marked approximately every foot along the cord. That is a workplace-focused description; it should not be read as a claim that every consumer power cord has identical marking requirements or the same marking pattern.

Type designation and construction clues

Letters in a cord type designation describe aspects of construction or use. ESFI lists these common examples: S means general use; W means outdoor use; J indicates standard 300-volt insulation; T indicates vinyl thermoplastic; P indicates parallel-wire construction; O indicates oil resistance; and E indicates TPE. These letters are clues within a complete designation, not a substitute for the full cord marking, the manufacturer’s instructions, or the electrical ratings.

Do not infer the full meaning of a cord from a single letter in isolation. A designation may combine several letters, while separate markings provide other details such as voltage, temperature, size, conductor count, or flame rating. UL’s flexible-cord guidance describes these kinds of surface information, but a reader should use the markings and product-specific category information to establish the actual limitations of the cord in hand.

Grounding, plugs, and physical condition

Plug configuration and grounding are part of selection, too. Use a cord with the configuration required by the appliance, and do not remove a ground pin or force a plug into an outlet. For extension cords, CPSC identifies proper polarization and proper continuity among the readily observable safety characteristics relevant to general-use indoor and outdoor cords. These characteristics are not replaced by a gauge number or a certification logo.

How to understand wire gauge

Wire gauge is a conductor-size designation. In the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system, a smaller gauge number means a larger conductor. That relationship can feel counterintuitive: 12 gauge has a larger conductor than 16 gauge. But gauge alone cannot determine whether a cord will work safely in a particular situation. Length and appliance load matter as well, along with the cord’s own ratings and instructions.

ESFI’s extension-cord guidance gives different gauge and amperage ranges at different lengths. The table below reproduces those ranges as guidance from ESFI; they are not results of an independent test here and should not be treated as a universal rule for every cord, appliance, or installation. Check the appliance and cord markings and manufacturer instructions before use.

Extension-cord length ESFI gauge and amperage guidance
25–50 feet 16 gauge for 1–13 amps; 14 gauge for 14–15 amps; 12–10 gauge for 16–20 amps.
100 feet 16 gauge for 1–10 amps; 14 gauge for 11–13 amps; 12 gauge for 14–15 amps; 10 gauge for 16–20 amps.
150 feet 14 gauge for 1–7 amps; 12 gauge for 8–10 amps; 10 gauge for 11–15 amps.

The practical pattern is that the guidance calls for a larger conductor as the cord gets longer or the load increases. Do not use this pattern to extrapolate a rating for a length, load, or cord type not shown in the table. The exact cord and appliance instructions take priority over a simplified rule of thumb.

A useful way to read a marking such as “12/3”

Markings may convey both conductor size and number of conductors. In a designation such as “12/3,” the first number identifies a 12-gauge size and the second indicates three conductors. That shorthand does not by itself establish voltage, current capacity, grounding arrangement, outdoor suitability, length guidance, or certification. Read the complete cord marking and product information rather than treating “12/3” as a complete suitability verdict.

Indoor and outdoor cords are not interchangeable by assumption

Use a cord intended for the environment where it will be used. CPSC identifies jacketed construction as a readily observable characteristic for outdoor extension cords. For specified two-wire indoor cords, outlet covers are an additional characteristic. CPSC says minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, proper polarization, and proper continuity apply to general-use indoor and outdoor extension cords; the additional characteristic depends on the cord type.

These details make “indoor or outdoor?” a separate selection question from “what gauge?” A cord’s conductor size does not establish that its jacket is suitable outdoors, and an outdoor-use clue does not establish that its gauge and ratings fit the appliance load. Verify the intended use and the full product markings.

What certification marks mean—and what they do not

A certification mark signals an evaluation under particular standards or conditions. The mark needs to apply to the relevant product and intended use. UL describes its own mark categories as follows; these definitions describe UL’s marks and should not be generalized to marks issued by other organizations.

UL mark UL’s description What to check
Listed Evaluation for reasonably foreseeable safety-related hazards for the intended use. Confirm the listing covers the product and intended use, not just a component.
Classified Evaluation addressing specific risks or conditions. Check which risks or conditions the classification covers.
Certified An enhanced mark that can bundle multiple certifications. Verify what certifications and product scope are included.
Verified Applies to performance verification programs. Check the particular performance program and product scope.

For wire and cable, UL’s guide says the complete Listing Mark appears on a tag attached to the reel or smallest unit container. The mark includes the UL symbol, the word “LISTED,” a serial number, and the product or category name. UL advises consulting the markings on or associated with the wire and the relevant category guide to determine ratings and limitations. Its industry guidance also recommends checking the certification tag and verifying details in Product iQ.

ESFI recommends choosing cords approved by an independent testing laboratory and names UL, Intertek (ETL), and CSA as examples. A mark is useful only when it can be connected to the product being evaluated and to its intended use. A logo on an unrelated part or accessory is not enough to establish that the cord itself was evaluated for the application you have in mind.

Why a component mark may not cover an assembled cord

OSHA’s interpretation for workplaces makes an important assembly distinction: a UL label on a plug or receptacle component alone does not demonstrate approval of the complete assembled extension-cord set. OSHA says that, in workplaces covered by its interpretation, extension cords must be approved as an assembly by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), such as UL. This is a workplace rule, not a universal statement of household requirements. The broader practical lesson is to verify the scope of the mark: component certification and complete-cord certification are not necessarily the same thing.

A practical selection and verification checklist

  1. Identify the cord category. Determine whether you have an extension cord, detachable power-supply cord, appliance cord, power strip, or another product. Do not apply extension-cord-specific guidance to a different category without checking its instructions.
  2. Read the complete markings. Locate the voltage and current or service ratings, gauge and conductor information, type designation, and any environmental or jacket markings. Use the tag or manufacturer documentation when the cord’s surface marking is incomplete or unclear.
  3. Match the cord to its environment. Confirm indoor or outdoor suitability. For outdoor extension use, check for the jacketed cord characteristic identified by CPSC and any stated environmental limitations.
  4. Match length and load. Determine the appliance’s load and cord length, then consult applicable guidance such as ESFI’s ranges alongside the cord and appliance instructions. Do not choose by gauge alone or extrapolate outside the published ranges.
  5. Check the plug and grounding arrangement. Ensure the cord is compatible with the appliance and outlet. Never remove a ground pin or force a plug into a receptacle.
  6. Verify certification scope. Inspect the certification tag or product information. Confirm the mark belongs to the cord or complete assembly as relevant, and verify details through the certifier’s product lookup where available.
  7. Use the extension cord temporarily. If the task calls for a long-term source of power, an extension cord is not a permanent extension of household wiring; follow ESFI’s advice and address the need with an appropriate permanent solution.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing the smallest number without considering anything else: A lower AWG number means a larger conductor, but the right choice still depends on cord length, load, ratings, and instructions.
  • Assuming a thicker-looking or outdoor-marked cord is automatically adequate: Neither appearance nor an outdoor designation substitutes for checking the current and voltage ratings against the appliance.
  • Treating a component logo as certification of the entire cord: Check whether evaluation applies to the product assembly, particularly in the workplace context addressed by OSHA.
  • Reading one letter as the full designation: Type letters convey only parts of the story. Read the complete marking and manufacturer information.
  • Using a temporary cord as permanent wiring: ESFI states that an extension cord is a temporary solution, regardless of its gauge or rating.
  • Modifying a plug to make it fit: Do not remove a ground pin or force a plug into an outlet; use compatible equipment and follow the product instructions.

Where the guidance comes from

CPSC’s Extension Cords Business Guidance is dated November 18, 2015. Its Substantial Product Hazard List for extension cords is a final rule dated July 21, 2015, effective August 26, 2015. UL Solutions’ wire-and-cable materials and ESFI’s Extension Cord Safety Tips were accessed October 13, 2026. OSHA’s flexible-cord materials were accessed October 13, 2026; its interpretation on NRTL approval of extension cords is dated June 12, 1991. The OSHA interpretation is specifically about places of employment, while the CPSC and ESFI material addresses consumer-facing extension-cord safety.
