HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) lets a television send sound from its built-in apps, tuner, or connected sources to a soundbar or AV receiver through the same HDMI cable used for the connection. eARC is the higher-bandwidth version, designed for lossless and multichannel formats that ordinary ARC cannot carry. You do not need either feature if you use only the TV’s speakers; you need compatible ARC or eARC ports when you want external audio equipment to play TV sound.
What HDMI ARC actually does
Normally, HDMI carries audio and video from a source such as a streaming box, game console, or disc player toward a television. ARC adds a return path: the TV sends audio in the opposite direction to an HDMI-connected soundbar or AV receiver. That return signal can include audio from the TV’s own streaming apps and tuner, not just devices plugged into the soundbar.
The practical benefit is simpler wiring. Instead of running a separate optical or other audio cable from the television, you connect the TV’s port labeled HDMI ARC to the matching ARC port on the soundbar or receiver. HDMI’s specification introduced this arrangement so one HDMI connection could handle the return-audio job.

What eARC adds
eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) keeps the same basic TV-to-audio-device role but provides substantially more audio bandwidth and format support. HDMI Licensing Administrator documentation lists capability ceilings of up to 192 kHz/24-bit audio and up to 37 Mbits per second of audio bandwidth. It also lists uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 audio, 32-channel uncompressed audio, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X among the formats eARC is designed to carry. See the official eARC overview and the related HDMI audio explanation.
Those figures describe what the channel can support, not what every television or soundbar will deliver. The TV, source device, audio settings, cable, and receiving equipment all have to support the desired format. A streaming service may also provide a compressed soundtrack rather than a lossless one, so eARC’s ceiling does not change the source’s actual audio.
ARC versus eARC at a glance
| Question | ARC | eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Returns television audio to a soundbar or AV receiver over HDMI. | Returns television audio with the same purpose but greater bandwidth. |
| Audio capacity | Lower bandwidth; it cannot carry the uncompressed and higher-bandwidth audio that eARC can. | Supports high-bitrate and uncompressed multichannel audio, including formats listed by HDMI Licensing Administrator such as Dolby TrueHD/Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio/DTS:X. |
| Wiring | One HDMI connection can replace a separate TV-to-audio optical cable. | Uses the same general one-cable return path. |
| Device requirement | The TV and soundbar or receiver must have compatible ARC support. | Both ends need eARC support for eARC operation; the HDMI standard does not define eARC as automatically backward-compatible with ARC. |
| Best reason to choose it | Your equipment and content fit ARC’s supported formats. | You need higher-bandwidth, lossless, or uncompressed multichannel audio and all relevant devices support eARC. |
ARC and eARC are audio-return features, not a general statement about a cable’s video refresh rate or resolution. A television can have advanced video capabilities without providing eARC, and an eARC port does not upgrade a source that outputs only a lower-quality soundtrack.

Do you need ARC or eARC?
If you use only the TV speakers
No. ARC and eARC matter only when TV sound must travel to external audio equipment. Leaving the TV on its internal speakers requires neither feature.
If you own a soundbar or receiver
You need a compatible return-audio connection if you want that device to play audio from the TV’s apps, tuner, or sources connected to the TV. ARC is sufficient when the formats you use fit ARC and both devices support it. eARC is justified when your equipment and content require the additional bandwidth or uncompressed multichannel formats described above.
If an existing ARC setup works
There is no automatic reason to replace it. Upgrade when a specific limitation matters—for example, a new receiver, television, or source requires an eARC path for a desired soundtrack, channel configuration, or lossless format. The limitation must exist in your actual equipment chain; buying an eARC cable alone cannot add eARC to a non-eARC TV or soundbar.

If you are deciding between optical and HDMI return audio
ARC can reduce cable clutter and lets compatible HDMI devices exchange control information. Optical may still be useful when a product has no ARC port or when a particular installation is more reliable that way. The choice should follow the ports and formats supported by the exact TV and audio device, rather than the cable’s marketing name.
How to check compatibility before connecting anything
- Read the TV’s port labels. Look for a physical HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input without that label is not the return-audio port.
- Check the soundbar or receiver. Find the HDMI output or input identified as ARC/eARC. Labels and directions differ by model, so use both products’ manuals.
- Match the capability you need. For eARC behavior, the TV and audio device both need eARC support. The standard itself does not promise that an eARC product will interoperate with every ARC-only product, although a manufacturer may design a device to support both.
- Trace every source. If a console, disc player, or streaming box is plugged into the TV, verify that the TV can pass the source’s audio format through its return channel. Passthrough support is model-specific.
- Check the audio documentation. Confirm that the TV, source, and soundbar or receiver all list the codec, channel count, and passthrough mode you intend to use. A format appearing in an eARC specification is not a guarantee that every model implements it.
How to connect ARC or eARC
- Turn off the TV and the soundbar or receiver while making the connection.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the television’s port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.
- Connect the other end to the audio device’s corresponding ARC/eARC port. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input if the manual identifies a separate return-audio port.
- Power on both devices and open the TV’s sound settings. Select the HDMI receiver, HDMI sound output, or similarly named external-audio option; the exact wording varies by manufacturer.
- In the TV and audio-device menus, enable HDMI control/CEC if the manual requires it for ARC operation. Manufacturers use different names for this setting.
- Choose the appropriate digital-audio or passthrough setting. If the TV offers Auto, Passthrough, Bitstream, or PCM choices, follow the format guidance in the TV and soundbar/receiver manuals rather than assuming one option works for all sources.
- Start audio from a built-in TV app, then test a source connected to the TV. Confirm that the soundbar or receiver switches to its TV/ARC input and that volume control behaves as expected.
HDMI’s overview of the return path is available in its HDMI Specification 1.4b information and its consumer guidance on getting the best sound from a TV. The physical connection is standardized, but menu names, CEC behavior, and passthrough choices remain product-specific.
Which HDMI cable should you use?
A cable is part of the link, but buying the most expensive cable does not turn ARC into eARC. HDMI Licensing Administrator says Ultra HDMI cables are designed to support eARC. It also notes that Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet and High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet might operate eARC but are not certified for it. Check the cable’s certification marking and the device manuals when eARC reliability matters.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Use a cable in good condition with firmly seated connectors and a length suitable for the installation. If an existing cable reliably carries your ARC connection, replacing it solely because eARC is available is unnecessary unless the cable category, certification, or the manufacturer’s instructions identify a problem. No cable can add an eARC port, decoder, or passthrough capability that the TV or audio device does not have.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What audio can ARC and eARC carry?
ARC has less bandwidth than eARC, so it cannot carry every uncompressed or high-bitrate format available to eARC. That does not mean every Atmos soundtrack requires eARC: some compressed formats can fit within ARC, while lossless or uncompressed versions may require eARC. The exact result depends on how the source encodes the soundtrack and what the TV and audio device pass through.

For a reliable answer, compare three entries in the manuals: the source’s output formats, the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC passthrough list, and the soundbar or receiver’s accepted formats. If any link converts the signal to a lower format, eARC cannot restore the original data.

Troubleshooting when TV audio does not return
No sound at all
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port and the soundbar or receiver’s matching port.
- Verify that both products actually support ARC or eARC; a normal HDMI port is not enough.
- Select the external HDMI audio output in the TV’s sound menu and the TV/ARC input on the audio device.
- Power-cycle both devices, reseat the cable, and test with a built-in TV app.
Sound works from apps but not from a connected source
- Check whether the TV passes that source’s codec through ARC/eARC. Some televisions accept a format internally but do not pass every format to an external device.
- Review the source’s audio-output mode and the TV’s passthrough setting. Try the documented PCM, Bitstream, Auto, or Passthrough option for the format you are testing.
- Connect the source directly to the soundbar or receiver if the manuals recommend that arrangement for a format the TV cannot pass through.
Audio drops out or the devices switch inputs unexpectedly
- Check HDMI control/CEC settings on both devices; incompatible control behavior can interrupt ARC handshaking.
- Try a different certified or manufacturer-recommended cable, especially for an eARC connection.
- Install available device updates, then repeat the manufacturer’s reset or HDMI-handshake procedure. An update cannot be assumed to add eARC support, however.
Can firmware add eARC?
Usually, no. HDMI Licensing Administrator advises that an eARC firmware upgrade is generally not available and recommends confirming with the device manufacturer. Treat eARC as a hardware and product-support requirement unless the manufacturer explicitly documents an upgrade for your exact model. A firmware update may fix a bug or improve compatibility without changing an ARC port into an eARC port.
A practical buying and upgrade decision
| Your situation | Most sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TV speakers only | No ARC/eARC requirement | There is no external audio return path to use. |
| Basic soundbar for TV apps and ordinary surround formats | ARC, if both devices support it | It simplifies wiring and may provide all the bandwidth your content uses. |
| New soundbar or receiver with lossless multichannel requirements | eARC on both TV and audio device | The higher-bandwidth path is designed for formats ARC cannot carry. |
| ARC system already meets your needs | Keep it | eARC is not inherently necessary when your current formats and connections work. |
| Only one device has eARC | Verify the manufacturer’s compatibility plan before buying | The HDMI standard does not guarantee automatic eARC-to-ARC interoperability. |
When comparing products, look for the exact port label and the supported audio-format list, not merely an HDMI version number. HDMI Forum describes HDMI 2.1 as a specification containing multiple features; a product’s implementation and port labeling determine whether eARC is present. See the HDMI Forum announcement for specification context.
The bottom line for most TV owners
ARC is the convenient HDMI route for sending TV audio to a soundbar or receiver. eARC is the same idea with enough bandwidth for higher-quality and uncompressed multichannel formats. Choose neither if the television’s own speakers are all you need. Choose ARC when it meets the formats and devices in your system; choose eARC only when the TV, audio device, source, and cable path all support the higher-bandwidth requirement you actually intend to use.
