The Garmin Approach S72 turns course data, shot history, swing observations and selected health signals into information you can use during practice or a round. Its swing metrics describe movement detected at the wrist—not clubhead speed, a diagnosis of swing faults or a guarantee of lower scores. Think of them as tools for comparing your own patterns across swings and clubs.

Garmin announced the Approach S72 on October 6, 2026. The specifications and capabilities below are Garmin’s descriptions; they should not be mistaken for independent accuracy or performance testing.

What do the S72 swing metrics measure?

In the Driving Range activity, the S72 presents several summaries of wrist and hand movement. Their practical value is usually in seeing whether your own motion is consistent, or how it changes with a different club or swing—not in chasing a single ideal number.

Hand speed

Garmin charts hand speed through the swing and highlights the maximum, plus speed at the top and at impact. A clock-face display indicates where maximum hand speed occurs; Garmin says it ideally happens before impact. This is a timing and pattern cue. It is not a direct reading of clubhead speed or ball speed.

  • Look back on your round to see how heart rate affected your performance and start to see trends in how your biometric data and score relate (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more

Backswing length

This measures the time from the start of the swing until the downswing begins, with the position also represented on a clock face. It can help you compare how repeatable your backswing is. A longer backswing is not automatically better.

Wrist rotation

Wrist rotation represents movement of the lead wrist from address through the top of the backswing to impact. Comparing it across swings may help you notice patterns that accompany your own better shots, but the measurement alone does not establish what caused a shot to succeed or fail.

Swing plane and transition angle

Swing plane is the angle of the hand path relative to the ground, shown separately for backswing and downswing. Transition angle is the difference between those angles. Because Garmin notes that an appropriate plane varies by club, compare like with like rather than treating one club’s value as a universal target.

Tempo

Tempo is backswing time divided by downswing time and is displayed as a ratio. Garmin calls 3:1 ideal based on studies of professional golfers. That is Garmin’s guidance, not a universal prescription for every golfer; use the ratio to understand your own rhythm rather than assume that matching it will improve your game.

How to use the metrics without overreading them

  • Compare repeated swings with the same club and similar intent before comparing different clubs.
  • Look for changes or consistency over a practice session; do not treat one reading as a verdict on your technique.
  • Pair a metric with what happened to the shot and, when useful, feedback from a qualified instructor. The S72’s definitions describe movement summaries, not proof that a metric predicts results.
  • Use the Driving Range activity to log swing-metric practice in Garmin Connect; Garmin says those sessions can contribute to fitness goals.

What golf information does the watch add on course?

Virtual Caddie

Garmin says Virtual Caddie bases a recommendation on the hole layout, wind information and your club-performance history. It is decision support, not a promise that a suggested club or shot will produce a particular result. Garmin Support lists the S72 series as compatible. Activation requires either five rounds with Club Prompt enabled or qualifying scorecards from another watch with AutoShot data assigned to clubs. Compatible CT10 sensors can also supply the required club history. Garmin lists mode restrictions, so check the current Virtual Caddie support guidance for setup and supported modes.

PlaysLike distance

PlaysLike adjusts distance to the green for elevation. Garmin’s general support description says some compatible watches can also account for wind and air density, with air density derived from temperature, humidity and air pressure. The factors and membership requirements vary by device; confirm the S72’s specific settings rather than assuming every enhanced factor applies. See Garmin’s PlaysLike distance explanation.

Garmin says aerial imagery shows a real image of the hole to help plan a shot, such as choosing a layup or a safer miss location. Garmin lists membership as required for this feature.

Green reading and putting analytics

On select courses, green-reading data shows putt-break direction and average slope percentage. After a round, the Garmin Golf app reports putting measures including speed bias, direction bias and make rate. Garmin says both green reading and putting analytics require an active Garmin Golf Membership, and green reading depends on supported course data.

What do the health and accessory features add?

Golf biometrics

Garmin says golfers can view real-time heart-rate changes around shots and review trends after a completed round. Heart rate provides context; by itself, it does not show that a change in heart rate caused a score outcome. Garmin explicitly says the watch is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition.

Approach CT10 sensors

The optional Garmin Approach CT10 sensors can automatically track shot location, distance and club type, according to the S72 owner’s manual. That club history can also support Virtual Caddie setup. A compatible laser rangefinder can provide distance to the flag.

Which S72 specifications are established?

Garmin’s October 6, 2026 U.S. launch announcement describes two sizes, 43 mm and 47 mm, with bright AMOLED displays, a titanium bezel, sapphire lens and ComfortFit fabric band. It advertises up to 20 hours on-course and up to 16 days with GPS off; these are maximum manufacturer figures, not independent battery-test results. Garmin announced a U.S. suggested retail starting price of $799.99 on that date. That launch price is not confirmation of a current retailer offer.
