Latency is the end-to-end delay between an event in a game and the sound reaching your ears. A codec is the method used to encode and decode that sound; its name alone does not prove how quickly a particular earbud setup responds. A 2.4 GHz USB dongle is a separate radio link, often supplied as the gaming mode, but it only helps when the dongle, earbuds, host port, operating system and console or computer are compatible.
To compare gaming earbuds, check the claimed milliseconds, the exact connection mode used to obtain that number, codec support at both ends of a Bluetooth link, the dongle’s platform and port support, and microphone behavior. Treat vendor figures as scoped claims rather than universal rankings.
What latency means in a gaming earbud
Latency is the complete delay through the audio path, not just the time spent inside a codec. A useful model is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The game or device generates an audio event.
- The operating system and audio stack process and buffer it.
- The wireless link transports packets, potentially retransmitting lost data.
- The earbud decodes the stream, buffers it and drives its speaker.
Every stage can add time. A product page may quote one part of this chain, a laboratory setup, or a manufacturer-defined “system latency” figure rather than a result measured from a game event to an acoustic waveform at the ear.

Why Bluetooth can feel delayed
The Bluetooth SIG’s 2022 LE Audio book discusses typical wireless music streaming over A2DP in the range of 100–200 milliseconds, even when the source is a local file. The book explains that buffering and retransmissions contribute and cautions that the codec is not responsible for all the delay. This is background for the technology discussed there, not a prediction for every Bluetooth earbud, phone or game.
In a rhythm game, competitive shooter or other title where an audio cue must line up with an on-screen event, a large or inconsistent buffer is easier to notice than in a turn-based game or ordinary video playback. A phone may also choose a different Bluetooth mode when the microphone is active, changing the delay and audio quality.
What a codec specification tells you
A codec is an encode/decode method. The transmitter compresses or formats audio, and the receiver reconstructs it. Common names on earbud specifications include SBC, AAC, LC3, aptX Low Latency, aptX Adaptive and proprietary LC3+ implementations.

The important buying question is not simply “Which codec is listed?” It is “Which codec will the source and earbuds actually negotiate in the mode I intend to use?” Both Bluetooth endpoints need compatible support. A phone may support AAC while a computer or console does not; an earbud may support several codecs but select only one for a particular source. The same product can use ordinary Bluetooth codecs for a phone and a different protocol through its supplied gaming dongle.
| Codec or format | What the label establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| SBC | A widely implemented Bluetooth audio codec. | A fixed end-to-end delay for a specific earbud and host. |
| AAC | A Bluetooth codec supported by many phones and some computers. | That every gaming platform will offer AAC or that latency will match another AAC product. |
| LC3 | A codec associated with Bluetooth LE Audio. | A guaranteed latency without knowing the complete implementation and buffering. |
| aptX Low Latency | Qualcomm’s low-latency aptX technology for compatible transmitting and receiving devices. | That any product carrying “aptX” uses the Low Latency variant or reaches Qualcomm’s example figure. |
| aptX Adaptive | Qualcomm technology with a dynamic low-latency mode designed to keep audio synchronized with media. | A universal result across phones, computers, earbuds and radio conditions. |
| LC3+ | A higher-quality or enhanced implementation that a manufacturer may associate with its own 2.4 GHz mode. | That a Bluetooth source supports the same implementation or that higher sample rate means lower delay. |
Published latency figures and their limits
Qualcomm’s aptX Low Latency product documentation states: “Featuring a latency of approximately 40ms (the rate needed to synchronize visual and audio), gaming and lip-syncing media is improved.” Qualcomm attributes that approximate figure to an audio adapter using the aptX Low Latency encoder in an embedded Bluetooth device. It is a technology statement, not a guaranteed result for every aptX earbud.
Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive page lists approximately 80 ms as low system latency and describes a “Dynamic low latency mode.” Again, this is Qualcomm’s specification for its technology. The host, receiver, buffering and radio conditions still determine the end-to-end result.

Those figures should not be placed on a single league table with a manufacturer’s 15 ms claim unless the test equipment, source, connection and definition of latency are controlled. There is no independent head-to-head gaming-earbud measurement in the available product material.
What a 2.4 GHz gaming dongle does
A dongle is a physical USB radio adapter designed to establish a link with a compatible headset or pair of earbuds. Gaming products commonly use a dedicated 2.4 GHz mode for the console or computer and retain Bluetooth for phones and general media.
The dongle can avoid some Bluetooth operating-system behavior and provide a path tuned for the manufacturer’s gaming firmware. It is not automatically better simply because its plug is USB-C. The receiver, earbuds, host port, operating system and platform must all support one another. A generic Bluetooth transmitter is not necessarily a replacement for a proprietary gaming dongle.

Compatibility checks before buying
- Platform: Confirm support for the exact console, computer, tablet or VR device. “USB audio” support varies by platform.
- Port: Check whether the receiver is USB-C, USB-A, or supplied with an adapter. A USB-C connector does not promise that every USB-C host will accept the radio.
- Pairing: Verify that the dongle is factory-paired or can be paired with the exact earbud model.
- Modes: Determine whether Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz can be used simultaneously, switched manually, or used only one at a time.
- Chat: Read how the microphone works in dongle mode and whether activating chat changes the audio profile.
- Fallback: Check whether a wired connection or Bluetooth mode remains available if the dongle is misplaced or unsupported.
How the headline numbers should be read
Always keep the number, connection mode and measurement qualification together. “15 ms” over a supplied 2.4 GHz dongle is not the same claim as “15 ms” over Bluetooth, and neither tells you whether the measurement is round-trip, one-way, electrical or acoustic.
Edifier’s GX05 page says its 2.4 GHz mode can reach as low as 15 ms, warns that actual experience may differ with testing equipment and recommends using the dongle. The caveat is part of the specification; the number should not be generalized to the earbuds’ Bluetooth mode.
Qualcomm’s S3 Gen 2 Sound Platform dongle media deck (2023) describes under 20 ms in internal development-board testing and also marks the figure as a target for future releases. That does not represent a measured result for a consumer earbud.

| Product | Documented connection and specification | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Cetra True Wireless SpeedNova | Dual Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz connections. Its USB-C dongle supports ROG SpeedNova in 2.4 GHz mode; ASUS associates that mode with LC3+ and 24-bit/96 kHz audio. | ASUS presents the connection as low latency but does not provide an independently measured end-to-end number in the cited material. The 24-bit/96 kHz format describes signal quality, not a latency guarantee. |
| Edifier GX05 | 2.4 GHz mode claimed at as low as 15 ms, with a warning that experience may vary by testing equipment. | Use the dongle for the claimed mode and retain Edifier’s qualification beside the number. |
| JBL Quantum TWS | The included USB-C dongle establishes a low-latency 2.4 GHz connection to compatible devices and Bluetooth is available for other sources. JBL lists Bluetooth 5.2 and A2DP, AVRCP and HFP profiles. | The cited page does not publish a numeric latency figure, so none should be inferred. |
| SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds | 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth 5.3, with a USB-C to USB-A converter and plug-and-play compatibility claims for PS5, Switch, PC, VR and tablets. | Confirm the exact platform and adapter arrangement. Its “up to 7x faster” wording is a manufacturer comparison. |
| HyperX Cloud MIX Buds | A June 14, 2022 announcement describes low-latency 2.4 GHz through a USB-C wireless adapter and Bluetooth 5.2 for other listening. | The announcement is an older product statement; check current availability, firmware and platform support before relying on it. |
Why bit depth and sample rate are separate from latency
Specifications such as 24-bit/96 kHz describe the digital signal format. They can indicate how a product handles audio data, but they do not directly prove a shorter path from game event to sound. Higher-rate audio may require more data and processing, while a low-latency mode may use a different format from the product’s highest-quality mode.
ASUS, for example, ties its LC3+ and 24-bit/96 kHz statements to the 2.4 GHz SpeedNova mode. Read that as a mode-specific capability, not evidence that the earbuds will deliver the same format or delay over Bluetooth.

- Identify the intended source. Write down the console, PC, phone or tablet and whether voice chat is required.
- Separate connection modes. Create one line for Bluetooth and one for the supplied 2.4 GHz dongle. Do not merge their codec or latency claims.
- Verify endpoint support. Check the source’s available Bluetooth codecs and USB-audio behavior, then check the earbud’s corresponding support.
- Read the latency footnote. Look for “up to,” “as low as,” test equipment, development hardware, round-trip wording and the exact mode.
- Check physical adapters. Confirm the receiver, USB-C-to-USB-A converter and any extension cable required by the host.
- Check chat behavior. Confirm microphone operation, sidetone, game/chat mixing and whether using the microphone changes the wireless profile.
- Plan switching. Find out how to move between phone Bluetooth and gaming dongle mode and whether both devices can remain paired.
- Check current support. Firmware, stock and console compatibility can change, so verify the manufacturer’s current documentation before purchase.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Ranking codec names alone: A codec is only one component of the path. Compare complete setups, not labels.
- Assuming Bluetooth is always unusable: Some games tolerate its delay, and implementations differ. The 100–200 ms A2DP context is not a universal measurement.
- Assuming every dongle works everywhere: Proprietary receivers and console USB support can be restrictive.
- Comparing unlike vendor numbers: A 15 ms product claim, a Qualcomm technology estimate and a development-board target may use different definitions and equipment.
- Treating audio resolution as speed: Bit depth and sample rate describe format, not end-to-end response.
- Ignoring the microphone: Chat can alter profiles, bandwidth and perceived delay; evaluate the mode you will actually use.
- Forgetting fit and battery constraints: A low-latency mode is useful only if the earbuds stay sealed comfortably and last through the session.
Choosing between Bluetooth and a dongle
Choose Bluetooth when
- You primarily use a phone or tablet and value simple pairing.
- Your game is not sensitive to tight audio-and-video synchronization.
- Your source and earbuds share a codec you have verified.
- You accept that microphone use or operating-system buffering may change the behavior.
Choose the 2.4 GHz dongle when
- The product explicitly supports your console or computer.
- You want the manufacturer’s gaming mode and its stated latency conditions.
- You can use the required USB port or adapter.
- You need predictable game audio and chat behavior from a dedicated receiver.
The most defensible conclusion is that gaming-earbud performance comes from the complete implementation: source, operating system, codec or dongle protocol, buffers, radio conditions, firmware and microphone mode. A codec label can describe compatibility, and a 2.4 GHz dongle can provide a gaming-focused path, but neither label by itself guarantees a particular number of milliseconds.
