DVD region codes control where many commercially produced DVD movies can be played: a region-coded disc generally needs a player configured for a compatible region. A disc marked 0 or ALL may be playable across regions, but the region label alone does not guarantee compatibility. The disc and player must also support the same video format, such as NTSC or PAL.
What a DVD region code does
Studios developed regional coding to control home-video releases across countries. Sony Support describes the purpose this way: “Many commercially-produced DVD movies contain regional coding to prevent the playback of the disc in a geographical area other than the one in which it was released.” A mismatch can stop playback; Sony gives the error “ERROR: Playing Of This Disc Prohibited By Area Limits.” (Sony Support, “What are the DVD region codes?”; Sony Canada, “What is the purpose of DVD region codes?”)
The region number on the disc and the region configured for the player need to be compatible for a region-coded disc to play. Some discs are not region coded, so a mismatch is not automatically a problem for every DVD. Region coding is one compatibility check, not a statement about a disc’s quality or video format.

What the DVD region numbers mean
Sony’s region table gives these broad market groupings. They are not definitive country-by-country rules for every territory, so check the disc packaging and the player documentation for a specific release.

| Code | Broad assignment |
|---|---|
| 1 | Canada, the United States, and US territories |
| 2 | Japan, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East (including Egypt), and Greenland |
| 3 | Southeast Asia and East Asia, including Hong Kong |
| 4 | Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean |
| 5 | Eastern Europe, Russia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia |
| 6 | China |
| 7 | Reserved for unspecified special use |
| 8 | Special international venues for air and oceanic travel |
Regions 1–6 broadly group markets; Regions 7 and 8 are reserved or special-use categories. For an individual disc, its printed marking and the manufacturer’s guidance are more useful than inferring compatibility from a country alone. (Sony Support region-code table)
How to find a disc’s region code
- Look for a small globe icon on the disc packaging or disc label. The region number appears on or beside the globe.
- If the disc shows multiple region numbers, it is intended for those listed regions.
- If it says “0” or “ALL,” Sony identifies that marking with discs that are not region coded or are intended to play in any region. Check the player’s documentation rather than treating the marking as a guarantee for every device.
Sony notes that some discs are not region coded and that many discs made with home-video capture software are coded Region 0. Neither a Region 0/ALL label nor a home-made disc’s origin proves that every player will support its video format. (Sony Support)

Why a region-compatible disc may still not play
Region and video format are separate compatibility questions. A disc and player can have compatible region codes but still be incompatible with each other’s video format or with the connected television. Sony says its US players support NTSC and Region 1; changing or overriding a region code does not add support for another video format. Check the exact player’s manual and specifications for region and format support before buying an imported DVD. (Sony Canada, “Are Sony DVD players and recorders compatible with different region codes or PAL and SECAM discs?”)
How to check whether an imported DVD will work
- Read the disc marking. Note the region number, multiple numbers, or a 0/ALL marking.
- Check the exact player. Find its supported DVD region in the manufacturer’s manual or model support page; do not assume all players from a brand have the same capabilities.
- Check video format separately. Confirm that the player and television support the disc’s format, such as NTSC, PAL, or SECAM, as applicable.
- Use the model and sales market in your check. Manufacturer guidance may apply only to particular models or markets. For example, Philips says the named US models in its answer play DVD-Video Region 1 only; that is not a claim about every Philips player. (Philips support: “Is my Philips DVD Player region free?”)
What to do if the DVD is from another region
Choose a multi-region player when you regularly use imported discs
A multi-region or region-free DVD player is the direct hardware option for discs from more than one region. Verify that the exact model supports the disc’s region and video format in the sales market where you will use it. The product-category label alone is not proof of support.

Consider a computer drive only after checking its limits
Sony says certain computer DVD drives can be modified within limits, but this does not establish that every drive or playback program can play every region. Confirm the exact drive and software support before relying on a computer or an external USB DVD drive. (Sony Support)
If playback is blocked, verify the cause before changing settings
An area-limits error points to a region mismatch, but format compatibility is a separate issue. Compare the disc’s marking with the player’s documented region support, then check video-format support. A region change or override cannot make an incompatible player handle a different format.
