DPI (more precisely, CPI) describes how many sensor counts a mouse generates for each inch of physical movement. Polling rate is how often the mouse reports those counts to your computer. Wireless latency is delay in the wireless input path. They describe different parts of mouse behavior. A higher maximum DPI or an 8,000 Hz setting is not automatically better, and a polling interval is not the same thing as complete click-to-screen latency.

The three specifications at a glance

Specification What it measures Unit What it does not tell you
DPI/CPI Sensor counts generated for a given distance of physical movement Counts per inch Your final cursor distance or in-game turn, which also depends on operating-system and game sensitivity
Polling rate How frequently the mouse sends status and movement reports to the computer Hertz (Hz), or reports per second Total input-to-screen latency, sensor quality, click latency, or game performance
Wireless latency Delay associated with transmitting and processing input over a wireless connection Usually milliseconds, with the measurement method specified by the vendor A universal value that can be compared fairly across products tested with different start and end points

These numbers interact, but they are not interchangeable. DPI concerns the scale of motion, polling rate concerns report frequency, and wireless latency concerns timing in the connection and processing path.

DPI and CPI: what sensitivity actually means

DPI is the gaming-market label

Mouse manufacturers and game software commonly use DPI, short for dots per inch. For a mouse sensor, CPI—counts per inch—is the more technically precise term: it describes how many sensor counts are produced as the mouse travels one inch across a surface. The two labels are often used for the same setting in gaming specifications.

DPI/CPI is a physical-movement setting, not the number of pixels your cursor must travel on the display. A higher value makes the sensor produce more counts for the same hand movement. The operating system, mouse utility, and game then apply their own sensitivity or scaling. Consequently, two games can feel different at the same mouse DPI, and two mice set to the same nominal DPI can produce different overall experiences if their software settings differ.

Why the maximum DPI is a poor quality score

A specification such as “26,000 DPI” states the top selectable value under the manufacturer’s configuration. It does not show whether that value is useful to you, whether the sensor behaves best there, or whether the mouse offers the precise setting you want. Most players should compare the adjustable range and increments around their preferred sensitivity rather than treating the largest number as a performance ranking.

For example, if your preferred setting is 800 CPI, a mouse that can select 800 reliably is more relevant than one whose headline maximum is higher but whose software only offers awkward steps around your target. Your effective movement is determined by the complete chain: physical distance, mouse CPI, operating-system sensitivity, game sensitivity, and any game-specific multiplier.

What changing DPI feels like

  • Higher DPI/CPI: fewer centimeters of hand movement produce the same on-screen or in-game movement. Small hand motions create larger cursor changes.
  • Lower DPI/CPI: you move the mouse farther for the same result, which can make fine aiming easier for some players but requires more desk space.
  • Same result at different settings: changing operating-system or game sensitivity can offset a DPI change. The resulting feel is not guaranteed to be identical because games may scale input differently, but DPI alone does not determine the final distance.

Polling rate: reports per second

The definition

Polling rate is the frequency at which a mouse reports its current movement, buttons, and other state to the computer. It is expressed in hertz: 1 Hz means one report per second. Common selectable rates include 125, 500, and 1,000 Hz; some newer mice advertise 4,000 or 8,000 Hz.

report interval in milliseconds = 1,000 ÷ polling rate in hertz

Polling rate Nominal reports per second Nominal interval
125 Hz 125 8 ms
500 Hz 500 2 ms
1,000 Hz 1,000 1 ms
2,000 Hz 2,000 0.5 ms
4,000 Hz 4,000 0.25 ms
8,000 Hz 8,000 0.125 ms

Those intervals are arithmetic conversions, not measurements of a complete input path. An 8,000 Hz mouse can send reports at a nominal 0.125 ms spacing, but the sensor, firmware, USB or wireless link, operating-system scheduling, game engine, rendering queue, and display refresh all remain part of what you experience.

What a higher rate can and cannot do

More frequent reports give the computer newer movement information more often. This can make the motion stream look smoother, particularly during fast movement or on a high-refresh display. The theoretical interval difference between 1,000 and 8,000 Hz is 0.875 ms, but that figure alone does not establish a visible advantage or a measurable improvement in a particular game.

Higher rates can also increase the amount of work for the host system and game. Whether that matters depends on the mouse, driver, operating system, game, processor load, and display. If a game or system does not process the reports efficiently, the advertised rate may provide little practical benefit. A stable rate that your system supports is more useful than a number you cannot run consistently.

Wireless latency: delay in a defined measurement path

Why the term needs a test boundary

Wireless latency is the delay associated with capturing an input, transmitting it over the radio link, receiving it, and processing it on the host. A latency figure is meaningful only when you know what event starts the clock and what event stops it.

For example, Razer describes a controlled measurement that uses the time delta from electrical switch actuation to an event at the host computer. That is a vendor-defined boundary for that test; it is not a universal standard for every wireless mouse. Another manufacturer might measure from a different internal event, stop at the receiver, or use different firmware, radio conditions, and equipment. Numbers from those tests should not be placed in a single ranking as though they were equivalent.

Wireless latency is not polling rate

A mouse may poll wirelessly at 1,000 or 8,000 Hz, yet its end-to-end delay still depends on radio transmission, receiver processing, firmware scheduling, switch and sensor behavior, USB handling, and the host software. Polling describes how often reports are offered; latency describes how long a particular input takes to reach a stated endpoint. A faster polling schedule does not automatically eliminate other delays.

Razer’s 2021 announcement for the Viper 8KHz gave 8,000 Hz as a product specification. Its executive statement that lower latency benefits casual and professional players by shaving milliseconds from reaction time is a company opinion, not independent evidence that every player will improve with that product or rate.

How the specifications interact during play

Movement

Your hand moves the mouse a physical distance. The sensor converts that distance into counts according to CPI, software applies sensitivity, and the mouse sends updates at the selected polling rate. The game consumes those updates and turns them into camera or cursor movement. Changing CPI changes the scale of movement; changing polling rate changes how often new movement data is delivered.

Clicks

A click follows a different path. Switch actuation, debounce and firmware behavior, the wireless link, receiver processing, the operating system, the game, and rendering all contribute to the time before you see an effect. A polling interval is only one possible slice of that chain, so it should not be advertised or interpreted as complete click-to-screen latency.

How to choose settings that fit your system

1. Start with a usable sensitivity

  1. Choose a CPI value that lets you make the movement you need within your available desk space.
  2. Set the operating-system and game sensitivity deliberately rather than changing all three controls at once.
  3. Keep a note of the combination so you can restore it after changing mice or reinstalling software.
  4. Adjust in small steps and judge control and consistency, not the headline maximum printed on the box.

2. Select a polling rate your computer can sustain

  1. Open the mouse configuration utility and locate the polling-rate control.
  2. Begin with 1,000 Hz if the mouse and computer support it, then test higher options only if they are offered and useful to you.
  3. Watch for erratic cursor movement, unusual processor load, game stutter, or a rate that falls back under load.
  4. If a game behaves worse at a higher setting, return to the highest stable rate rather than assuming the largest number is required.

3. Check wireless receiver requirements

Some mice need a dedicated high-polling wireless receiver. Razer documents a HyperPolling Wireless Dongle for supported products; it is not a universal accessory for every wireless mouse. Confirm compatibility with the exact mouse model, install the required firmware or utility, and place the receiver where the manufacturer recommends. A dongle made for another product should not be assumed to unlock the advertised rate.

A reliable way to compare two gaming mice

Comparison question What to verify Why it matters
Can I select my preferred sensitivity? Adjustable CPI range, increments, profiles, and whether settings are stored onboard The usable setting matters more than the maximum number
Which report rates are supported? Wired and wireless rates, selectable steps, and the nominal interval for each Shows how often movement data can be delivered
Is the wireless rate available with the included hardware? Required receiver or dongle and exact model compatibility A mouse may not reach its advertised wireless rate without a specific accessory
What does the latency claim measure? Start event, end point, equipment, firmware, connection mode, and test conditions Different measurement boundaries are not directly comparable
Will my system support it? Operating-system utility, USB connection, game behavior, processor load, and display refresh Practical stability determines whether a specification helps you

Do not turn vendor specifications into user-performance statistics. No independent study establishing a universal real-world gameplay improvement from a particular DPI or polling-rate change is identified here, so claims about better aim or faster reactions should be treated cautiously unless they describe a specific, comparable test.

Common mistakes and fixes

“More DPI means a better sensor”

Why it is wrong: maximum CPI is a range limit, not a quality score. Fix: compare the setting you can actually use, the adjustment steps, tracking behavior, and software controls.

“8,000 Hz means 0.125 ms total latency”

Why it is wrong: 0.125 ms is only the nominal interval between reports at 8,000 Hz. Fix: treat it as report frequency and inspect the complete latency measurement boundary.

“Wireless is always slower than wired”

Why it is incomplete: wireless performance depends on the radio system, receiver, firmware, interference, and the vendor’s test method. Fix: compare like-for-like measurements and connection modes instead of assuming a result from the word wireless alone.

“The advertised wireless polling rate works with any receiver”

Why it is wrong: high-rate operation can require a model-specific dongle. Fix: verify the exact compatibility list and install the required software before troubleshooting the rate.

“Changing DPI should change only the game”

Why it is wrong: DPI, operating-system sensitivity, and in-game sensitivity can all affect the final movement. Fix: record the full configuration and change one control at a time.

What to remember

  • DPI/CPI is the sensor’s count scale for physical movement.
  • Polling rate is report frequency; 1,000 Hz corresponds to a nominal 1 ms interval, while 8,000 Hz corresponds to 0.125 ms.
  • Wireless latency is a delay measured across a specified path, not another name for polling rate.
  • Use the sensitivity you can control, the highest stable polling rate your system supports, and only compatible wireless receivers.
  • Never compare latency numbers without checking where each measurement starts and ends.
